Lord, please don’t put Streep and Hudson in the same category for the oscars…Streep will kill…she gave a classy speech, asking the Amern. public to ask for movies if they’re not in their theaters.
I’m starting to hate the Brits…they’re so smug.

  2. Direwolf says:

Thanks for the thread, DP. I am wathcing 24 and IMing with my son who is a freshman at NYU. Ain’t technology great. We always shared 24 and still can even though we are miles away. Hey, we shoould be an AT&T commercial!

  3. Chicago48 says:

24 actor lost to house actor. The Globes are enjoyable. Surprise – Clint wins over Pan’s Labryinth. Spielberg produced Letters? Didn’t know that.

  4. qwiggles says:

I remember a time when Jamie Foxx was endearing.

  5. James Leer says:

Another year, another round of Hot Blog posters liveblogging 24 instead of the Globes.

  6. Direwolf says:

Hour 2 tonight of 24 was worth missing almost anything for. Jack shoots Curtis and before he is even done upchucking a nuclear bomb goes off in LA. I guess that would cancel the Globes and the Oscars. Soaring score following the Curtis shootdown and everything. Just when iwas going to throw in the towel and stop watching 24.

  7. Chicago48 says:

Jamie Foxx is a supporting actor, not a lead, and he thinks he’s a lead. As for up and coming black actors, give me Terrence Howard.
Warren Beaty just got up and absolutely bombed…put the man out to pasture please!

  8. Lota says:

after ascertaining that Helen Mirren looked great, Bill Nighy is such a goofball. only then I could go back to 24.
Angelina does look nice in gunmetal gray.

  9. Joe Leydon says:

Very odd: I was speaking on the phone to my wife back in Houston (while I’m a hotel room in Dallas) — when the Best Director award was announced. (We were both watching the Golden Globes on our respective TVs.) She exclaimed: “Oh, Martin Scorsese! That’s great! It’s about time!” But here’s the strange part: She said that about four seconds before I heard the announcement on my TV. I have to ask myself: Do TV signals hit Houston before they hit Dallas? Or what?

  10. Direwolf says:

    Hey Joe,
If one of those TVs is HD there is a few second lag. Local bar I hang at has two TVs, one HD, one analog, and I get to watch every play twice.
    Direwolf

  11. Jonj says:

NBC HD was running about four seconds behind regular NBC. Cohen was hilarious.

  12. Lota says:

    well. good for Marty
but will the guilt runneth over for Oscars? I don;t think Departed is his best but I’d take Departed getting awards over Aviator.
    Good for Borat!

  13. Lota says:

Joe, for a long happy marriage keep your wife in a another city!
[guaranteed to work, especially if you still accept that everything is Your fault]

  14. Joe Leydon says:

But here’s the rub: Neither of us is watching a HD TV. Strange.

  15. ployp says:

The US is still doing the ‘lag’ think on live broadcast? Is this the result of the ‘accident’ with Janet Jackson? But how come some channels have it and some don’t?

  16. jeffmcm says:

It seems likeliest that different affiliates are on slightly different time delays.

  17. Direwolf says:

    Now we got some excitement.

  18. Joe Straat says:

Now Jack needs to get back the EYE OF THE BAUER! If it wasn’t in real time, it’d be time for a montage. Good episodes, by the way.

  19. Hallick says:

“Ugly Betty” won Best TV Comedy. For me, that’s more than enough said about the Golden Globes. Vaya con mierda, HFPA….

  20. Ian Sinclair says:

Chicago45 of course we Brits are smug. So would you be if you had won EIGHT freaking Globes!

  21. Chicago48 says:

Hallick: The globes tonight reflected the global cast of TV and movies…blacks, hispanics, French, English (blah!).
Ian: Sorry, but you brits act like you got a stick up your arse…Mirren was so stiff I wanted to vomit…can she please smile and be happy? Does she have to be ‘in character’ all the time. Please Oscar, give the best actress to somebody else who knows how to have fun.
And please god – have Whitaker rehearse a speech! He needs rehearsing BAD! or Oprah will pull her support and go with Will Smith (lol)
And please god– DG not LMS for best picture. If not DG, then the Departed. And please – not BABEL over DG. Enough with globalization!

  22. Ian Sinclair says:

You need a xylophone to play along with that xenophobia, Chicago48?

  23. THX5334 says:

    Direwolf….
    Um….
Thanks for the 24 spoiler without warning for those of us that haven’t caught up with it yet on our Tivo’s….
Feel free to put on the “I am a spoiler asshole” T-shirt/cap for the remainder of this thread.
(You know the one, it has the picture of Jeff Wells on it?)
Don’t worry, I’ve been inadvertantly guilty of doing the same.
If 24 weren’t already so full of horrible plot holes in the first hour, I’d would be more upset.
Now Battlestar Galactica, That there is a show to go postal about spoilers.

  24. William Goss says:

At last year’s Oscar gathering, the show was on about three TVs in the same house, two within direct range of each other, and there was a minor delay, although I don’t think either one was HD.

  25. Cadavra says:

I have a small TV in my bathroom that’s hooked up to an antenna and noticed that my cable company lags several seconds behind the over-the-air signal. That’s probably what happened to you guys.

  26. Brett B says:

Joe, the easiest explanation for your situation is that your wife has psychic abilities that have thus-far been untapped.

  27. Hallick says:

“Now Battlestar Galactica, That there is a show to go postal about spoilers.”
It’s also a show that knows how show nuclear bombs going off. I’m sorry, but 24 just had one of the lamest depictions of a catastrophic event I’ve ever seen. Were they just too cheap or did they err way too far in that “the less you see, the worse it seems” direction? Fuppin’ sat-com photos, Jesus…

  28. movielocke says:

    24 spoilers:
Hallick, we’re talking about suitcase nukes less than one megaton, substantially less than Hiroshima or Nagasaki, and they are constrained by attempting real time, which means that over the next hour the cloud is going to slowly climb and dissapate per physics. After the initial blast and quick rising cloud, that is. Not as dramatic, a bit more realistic. Like a lot of the effects on 24, it was probably done in house by a full time guy.
    Adam

  29. Direwolf says:

Sorry about that THX. I’ll be more careful next time.
As for “horrible plot holes.” I thought that was the alternative series name for 24 every season!

  30. STOP TALKING ABOUT BLOODY 24! This isn’t a thread for 24. Ugh. Moving on.
“”Oh, Martin Scorsese! That’s great! It’s about time!””
    Well, he’s won a Globe before…
So happy for Meryl (speech of the night!) and Cohen. Annoyed at Babel and Iwo Jima winning. Haven’t seen Dreamgirls.
Hugh Laurie’s win was boring (it’s just like Tony Shalhoub winning all the time!)
Two things I think that are worth bringing up:
If Meryl was wanting to make a push to actually win the Oscar over Mirren, then that speech was a brilliant start. Who doesn’t wanna see Meryl give a speech like that at the Oscars.
And similarly. Forest Whitaker?! Would voters rather a big lively speech from Will Smith? A dignified and cheeky speech by Peter O’Toole? Or a mumbling incoherent mess from Whitaker?
I hope Alexandre Desplat can tranfer this win into his first Oscar nomination.
And lastly, aren’t Brad and Angelina just the most boring couple around these days? God. They look like bad G-rated wax figure versions of themselves.

If going to an awards show is such a chore, why don’t they stay home? Compare them to someone like Rinko Kikuchi who seemed so overjoyed to be there she was bursting with excitement. Even in background shots. Was good to see someone like that for a change.

  32. ugh, why did it come up as an error if it posted the bloody thing?! Sorry bout the double post. The second one has more on the end that I thought of after the first time I pressed Post.

  33. Tofu says:

Wow, an unknown actress was having the time of her life in the spotlight for the first time, while another couple who have been around the circuit for years saw what a bore this year became, and weren’t on fire for our amusement. Ho Hum.
Contrary to Kamikaze belief, many people vote for the best performance in the movie, not on the stage.

  34. adorian says:

    Streep was brilliant.
Beatty, Whitaker, and Cohen were not.
If I were an Oscar voter, I would ask myself, “Whose speeches would I rather hear Oscar night?—Mirren and Whitaker?—or Streep and, hmmm, maybe Gosling?”
Surely Whitaker knew he was going to win, so couldn’t he have prepared something? Or did he have a little too much free bubbly during the course of the much-too-long night?
Why wasn’t Dame Judi there? Is she currently appearing onstage in London?
I would love for Oscar night to turn into a night of big upsets. Streep, Gosling, Blunt, and Haley. But then I live in dream world…where there is no free bubbly.

  35. The Carpetmuncher says:

Jamie Foxx isn’t an “up-and-coming black actor” – he’s a star with an Oscar to prove it. Hopefully Terrence Howard will get one some day too….

  36. Joe Straat says:

“STOP TALKING ABOUT BLOODY 24! This isn’t a thread for 24. Ugh. Moving on.”
Well, it’s the only thing on that had any kind of importance last night. The only thing the Globes have changed between yesterday and today is that Babel now has something to sprawl across the top or the bottom of their DVD packaging and perhaps the Secrets and Lies also-ran spot in the Best Picture category. You could say the same thing about the Oscars, but the amount of people who have “Academy Award winner” on their obituaries is FAR more than “Golden Globe winner.”

  37. THX5334 says:

    Kamikaze,
Can’t you see how lame award shows are if more people on the thread are interested about 24?
Face it people, the star system has crashed. The media has over fed itself and the real people in this country are SICK of celebrity.
There was absolutely NO star wattage there last night. Even the ones that used to have it just aren’t that dazzling anymore.
The coolest, classiest and prettiest girl in there last night was America Ferrara. What does that tell you? (Something good. Believe it. And Maria Menuous is classless. And the after speech interviews they set up with her and Nancy is exactly a sign of how these shows are degenerating)
The star system is crashing, the award shows – the pinnicle events of this culture -are crashing.
I know I sound like a broken record.
The media is too homogonized and too redundant with celebrity culture because of technology.
What you see on the magazine stands, you’ve already read on some blog the day or week before; yet you still have to see the same story again on CNN or MSNBC or FOX when you’re trying to find out some real hard news!
Rinse and repeat every week ad nauseaum the last four to six years…
we could deal with it before when information exchange wasn’t so instantaneous and as an effect, redundant)
Then you see all the same faces last night at the Globes that you’ve seen every day on some blog or print or visual media every day since God knows when.
    Why?
Because all this media is owned by the same few companies and they overlap and cover the shit out of each other ad nauseaum for ratings and money, and now it’s hitting rock bottom.
(Come on people, we all know this. I’m not expounding anything new here)
How were the ratings for the Globes compared to last year, and the year before?
(maybe they went up and my point goes to shit? I’m asking)
The star system is over because Corporate owned Hollywood OD’d the world on celebrity culture.
These award shows will continually degenerate until they’re complete mockeries of their former selves, or just become another unimportant part of the process, like the year end double issue of your favorite rag at the aisle.
While the star system is crashing,
    content is becoming king.
And, we’re arguably in a golden age of television.
So what does it say when more people want to talk about 24 than award shows?
The Emmy’s are even worse. There is no better written show on television right now than Battlestar Galactica; and because it’s setting is in “Outer Space!” it will get snubbed.
I respect the Globes for what it is; A chance for Hollywood to have an expensive party for free on someone else’s dime….and that’s all it is.
If anything the Globes are supposed to be the most fun to watch because nobody cares and everyone gets trashed. But the pretentious Access Hollywood after speech interviews, (not the winners themselves, just the idea of Nancy and Maria with a mic. right after, ugh! I rest my case)
It’s kind of like the oil industry. The celebrity culture is just as noxious. But there is so many people in this town and game whose livelyhoods are tied to it; how do you get rid of it and get back to what it used to be about..the work?
I don’t know the answer to that. I think you just have to deal at this point. Trust that technology is leveling the playing field; do your work and trust it will find it’s audience.
But something is wrong when videogame sales and other forms of entertainment profits continually rise; while film profits only rise because they keep raising admission prices…(I’m sure that’s an arguable point that Dave would correct me on if he wasn’t in Utah)
The kids are fed up with seeing the same few dozen celebrity’s and are going to other means of fun. Until there’s a good horror flick or Big event movie, then they come back to the theatre or buy the DVD.
Bottom line, there was nobody there electrifying last night. Even the ones that used to be.
We know and see too much of them all now, for them to have any mystery or magic, left. And it’s not even their fault. It’s the fault of the Coroporate pusher-man who keeps dumping this celebrity driven media down people’s throats and the OD is coming.
    On another note…
    Lota,
If you make it to LA for the Oscars, I am pimping myself to be your date for your party…
Sipping moonshine from a flask with a bunch of drag queens making fun of everybody at the show sounds like a BLAST!
Enjoy the rest of your week people. Back to the grind….

  38. Lota says:

aww, i’ll be in LA before the oscars this time mr thx, too bad.
i know Queen’s everywhere and the best party for Oscar Style Rippin’ is in San Francisco or in Chicago since they are removed from it, yet are completely into the threads (in the clothing sense) industry. not sure which posse I will hang out with depends on airfares and ice storms.
i don;t know if straight males are allowed, or if so and you are in half-way decent shape you might be in peril (like a collar or put in a cage), or if in Bad shape, for a Queer eye makeover and much handwringing and pity.
I’m only allowed to attend said parties because I have a smaller waist than any of them (it’s the comparison jealousy thing), and I’ve met Jean Paul Gaultier and Shirley Bassey(the broad who sang Goldfinger & Hey Big Spender)–now THOSE are celebrities. I also let them pick on my appearance and give me advice. It is fun though, albeit they are really mean.
    CELEBRITY
I would hope the world would get tired of the generic manufactured celebrity-dom but I don;t know if very young people are tired of it, unfortunately. Too many marionette versions of young blonds and too thin, running around LA trying to get noticed.
I would like to see a reformed sort of old studio system again with unique stars/actors and cap-controlled star salaries (stars have always been taken care of and they don;t need 20 million a movie plus back end, no one “needs” that), with a % of backend if the movie is successful (if they are willing to go Indie SAG).
and a 5 million cap on Directors too (yeah that’s you Michael Bay “Directing is not a job. It’s more like a career. Which is great!”).
It might prevent “phone in” their performances of actors and directors blowing too much expensive shit up. Now If only there was some way to prevent too much “Development”.
If they love the movies, Celebrities would work for less, but most don’t love the movies enough, they only love exposure.
Kiefer used to engage in Celebrity(bloody boring) as a youngster. He’s better all the time now that he’s ‘acting’ more.
24 is more interesting than the globes were Camel, hate to say. I did really enjoy Streep though, she really is a class orator with great timing. She should be in more European movies. They celebrate & actually like old broads without much surgery like Jeanne Moreau and Charlotte Rampling.
WHy can;t Streep host the oscars? She’d be excellent and she doesn;t talk too fast like a Stand Up does.

  39. Tofu, I don’t expect everyone to be like Kikuchi was, but my god, there’s alcohol, everyone’s friends and they’re all sitting around and there’s no host. Yet a lot of people just looked all “ho hum” about it. I want some excitement.
The TV series wins were some of the best (as was America Ferrera’s) because the entire cast gets up and it feels all celebratory and they all seemed legitimately excited to be there and to be winning awards. Even Streep was happy.
I blame Brad and Angelina. Those two dullards could kill the room with the fumes from their melting wax faces.

Quote Unquotesee all »

It shows how out of it I was in trying to be in it, acknowledging that I was out of it to myself, and then thinking, “Okay, how do I stop being out of it? Well, I get some legitimate illogical narrative ideas” — some novel, you know?

So I decided on three writers that I might be able to option their material and get some producer, or myself as producer, and then get some writer to do a screenplay on it, and maybe make a movie.

And so the three projects were “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep,” “Naked Lunch” and a collection of Bukowski. Which, in 1975, forget it — I mean, that was nuts. Hollywood would not touch any of that, but I was looking for something commercial, and I thought that all of these things were coming.

There would be no Blade Runner if there was no Ray Bradbury. I couldn’t find Philip K. Dick. His agent didn’t even know where he was. And so I gave up.

I was walking down the street and I ran into Bradbury — he directed a play that I was going to do as an actor, so we know each other, but he yelled “hi” — and I’d forgot who he was.

So at my girlfriend Barbara Hershey’s urging — I was with her at that moment — she said, “Talk to him! That guy really wants to talk to you,” and I said “No, fuck him,” and keep walking.

But then I did, and then I realized who it was, and I thought, “Wait, he’s in that realm, maybe he knows Philip K. Dick.” I said, “You know a guy named—” “Yeah, sure — you want his phone number?”

My friend paid my rent for a year while I wrote, because it turned out we couldn’t get a writer. My friends kept on me about, well, if you can’t get a writer, then you write.”
~ Hampton Fancher

“That was the most disappointing thing to me in how this thing was played. Is that I’m on the phone with you now, after all that’s been said, and the fundamental distinction between what James is dealing with in these other cases is not actually brought to the fore. The fundamental difference is that James Franco didn’t seek to use his position to have sex with anyone. There’s not a case of that. He wasn’t using his position or status to try to solicit a sexual favor from anyone. If he had — if that were what the accusation involved — the show would not have gone on. We would have folded up shop and we would have not completed the show. Because then it would have been the same as Harvey Weinstein, or Les Moonves, or any of these cases that are fundamental to this new paradigm. Did you not notice that? Why did you not notice that? Is that not something notable to say, journalistically? Because nobody could find the voice to say it. I’m not just being rhetorical. Why is it that you and the other critics, none of you could find the voice to say, “You know, it’s not this, it’s that”? Because — let me go on and speak further to this. If you go back to the L.A. Times piece, that’s what it lacked. That’s what they were not able to deliver. The one example in the five that involved an issue of a sexual act was between James and a woman he was dating, who he was not working with. There was no professional dynamic in any capacity.
