It’s amazing how loyal Tyler Perry’s audience is. Kudos to him.

  2. LYT says:

Shocked that Shutter did that well with no stars and a played-out concept. It probably already made its money back.

  3. Joe Leydon says:

LYT: Hey, it’s like David often (but perhaps not often enough) reminds us — they don’t all have to be home runs. Singles and doubles can also score for a studio. Mind you, I’m not talking about artistic ambition or achievement here. But purely from a business standpoint, Shutter likely will be viewed as a safe investment that paid off nicely.

  4. Dr Wally says:

Good to see The Bank Job holding firm even though it really should be doing better. Easily the most satisfying entertainment of ’08 so far (not that that’s saying much) and another solid effort from the sadly underrated Roger Donaldson.

  5. LexG says:

Loved Bank Job. Best non-Funny Games movie of the year, indeed.
Roger Donaldson is awesome… obviously not an “auteur,” and his filmography can be all over the map, but many solid, borderline-excellent films (No Way Out, The Bounty, 13 Days, I’d even argue The Recruit.) Even his supposed misses (White Sands, The Getaway ’94) have an unpretentious craftsmaship. Just the best kind of journeyman, sort of like John Badham in his 70s/80s heyday.

  6. movieman says:

Hell, yeah, Lex! I dig “The Recurit,” too (with another fine Colin Farrell performace.)
“In Bruges” should’ve done a lot better than it did. Of course, the fact that Focus never committed themselves to more than a couple hundred screens probably contributed to its preordained doom.
The thing will definitely rock on dvd, tho, and is sure to pick up a major cult following down the road.
Check my previous post on here re: “The Bank Job.”
An excellent flick, and it’s great seeing those sustained b.o. legs. I just wonder how much better it might have done if Lionsgate had (a) actually given it a decent initial screen count, and (b) they’d picked a (much) better opening date.

  7. Filmshark says:

Amazing how Paramount can turn a sure fire comedy from Apatow into a loser. How many films can Brad Weston ruin before the powers that be at Paramount realizes that Weston has no business developing movies? If it were all up to Weston, Paramount would only make movies like CURSED, PROZAK NATION and SUPER MARIO BROTHERS. I guess that is why Brad Grey brought in John Lesher to run the division and make Weston a lame duck executive.

  8. L.B. says:

Enjoyed the hell out of The Bank Job, too. Okay direction, but a fine cast, especially Statham doing what he does best. Should definitely get more business than it’s getting.

  9. ployp says:

Just looked at the boxoffice of Jumper at boxofficemojo.
    Domestic: $77,521,000 42.2%
    + Foreign: $106,281,228 57.8%
    = Worldwide: $183,802,228
I guess it will get its money back.

  10. Dr Wally says:

Good to see people backing up my support for Roger Donaldson. Whenever i watch one of his movies, i know that whatever else, i’m in safe storytelling hands (and that’s something you can’t always say even of the top directors in the world – Gangs of New York or A.I., for example, are wonderful FILMMAKING but pretty lousy STORYTELLING). What about The World’s Fastest Indian, another little Donaldson gem? Even a very cheesy movie like Dante’s Peak takes the time to develop it’s characters and it’s locale in the first half, so that it becomes surprisingly gripping once the volcano goes boom halfway through. Compare it to ‘Volcano’ if you dare and you’ll see what i mean…

  11. The World’s Fastest Indian was a huge hit here and in NZ. I wonder if The Bank Job can do better overseas, too.
I’m surprised nobody has mentioned the Weinstein Co’s entry at No. 10, Under the Same Moon starring America Ferrara. Obviously won’t have much of a future beyond this weekend, but they got it out there pretty well for a quick buck.

  12. Joe Leydon says:

Speaking of New Zealand: Roger Donaldson fans might want to check out two of his early films: Sleeping Dogs — with the late, great Warren Oates! — and the terrific Smash Palace.

  13. LexG says:

Anchor Bay, I believe, used to have a double-feature DVD that contained both Sleeping Dogs and Smash Palace.
I believe it’s out of print now, and I’m kicking myself for never having picked it up.

  14. movieman says:

I wouldn’t be so quick to write off “Same Moon,” Kamikaze.
It’s a real w.o.m./audience kind of film, and I think it’s going to be arround for awhile–at least until the summer movies come home to roost in early May.
The only question is how wide F-Searchlight can take a (mostly) subtitled Spanish-language movie without the genre hook of a “Pan’s Labyrinth.”

  15. Chucky in Jersey says:

“Under the Same Moon” has a strange split-rights setup: Fox Searchlight for marketing, Weinstein for distribution. Pic has yet to play non-Latino markets like Philadelphia.
Speaking of Philly, a megaplex in that area paired “Funny Games” with the trailer for “Infamous” … which came out in fall 2006.

  16. leahnz says:

i have a ‘sleeping dogs/smash palace’ dvd double set, it was in the bargain bin for $6.90!
good to see some roger donaldson fans here, he’s the only kiwi director who made it to the ‘big leagues’ and has managed to sustain a career outside of nz. speaking of ‘world’s fastest’, anthony hopkins probably managed the ‘world’s worst’ kiwi accent ever to be put on film, but the nz accent is a hard nut to crack as far as doin’ accents goes

  17. When I went and saw Curse of the Golden Flower they showed a trailer for a movie called Halflight with Demi Moore. Thing is that movie had been released over half a year prior and was already out on DVD. Weird how things like that happen.
Leahnz, I assume you’re just forgotten Peter Jackson?

  18. Filmshark-
Wait’ll you see FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL….Apatow better get his ass back behind the camera ASAP to save his newfound legacy.

  19. David Poland says:

    Don’t be so sure, polyp.

  20. leahnz says:

kam, i didn’t forget pj, he’s made an international career for himself, but he rarely leaves nz to shoot, and only if he absolutely has to, he’s like an agorophobe with nz as his house

  21. leahnz says:

just read my post above and man, i should have packed a few more commas into one sentence and gone for the world dumb-ass record

  22. Blackcloud says:

Sorry, Leah, the “world dumb-ass record” for this blog has already been claimed, and not by you.

  23. leahnz says:

always nice not to be the biggest dumb-ass…
i was talking to a friend at work yesterday about the merits of daniel craig as james bond, which go me to thinking about casino royale, which got me to thinking about martin campbell, another kiwi who’s managed a successful interntional directorial career, arguably not of the same calabre as donaldson but he’s managed to hang in there, i also heard jane campion is coming out of retirement to direct another film, so i guess the kiwis aren’t as thin on the ground as i had thought

oops, how the hell did that happen?
    i am such a techno-tard
