  1. Seriously, can people go and see Up the Yangtze if it’s showing near them. Such a good doco.
Have seen a few movies at the Melbourne International Film Fest so far. Gardens of the Night is derailed by – and this is perhaps the oddest reason for disliking a movie I’ve ever come up with – poor makeup and hair. But, seriously, the homeless drug using chain smoking prostitute that is the main character is soooo pretty. She has perfect facial skin, her legs are waxed and tanned and her hair is long, golden and wavy. So silly.
Useless was not a step up for Zhang-ke Jia whose Still Life I adored. This was just kinda aimless and not indepth enough.
Acolytes is an Aussie horror flick that could have used a bit of tightening up in the middle. Didn’t have the balls to be a straight out slasher/horror flick, nor did it want to be too intellectual so as the kids wouldn’t wanna see it. As it stands it’s a bit in the middle. Starts and ends great though.
Aaanyway. How much is a Final Destination movie in 3D going to be hilarious/amazing?

  2. SJRubinstein says:

“FINAL DESTINATION 4” IS GONNA NUKE U TO MARZ-world!!! David Ellis can SURF, but ALSO DIRECT. HOW under-rated is THE CELLULAR?!
    FD GOES NASCAR. FIUNALLYE.
    [to paraphrase/honor LexG]
The good thing about shooting an “FD” movie in and around New Orleans is that there are plenty of locations to dress and destroy. Look for the climax to be as kick-ass as the opening disaster sequence.
And who else is thrilled to finally have a decent “Spaced” box set? I’d watched the thing completely out of order – to my discredit – from discs burned by friends, etc. Watching it straight-through now is like watching a whole new show (though yes, my wife fell asleep ten minutes in to the first episode).

  3. Chucky in Jersey says:

Pass the pretzels — here comes the trailer for “W”.
Just hope it doesn’t crash your browser like it did mine.

  4. scooterzz says:

the ‘w’ trailer was posted and discussed to death last week….here’s the trailer that should scare you:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OCbsVrrKXh8
i’m thinking this will be one of the big cats at years end….

  5. IOIOIOI says:

Scoot: it’s coming out on October 24. You know what opens on Halloween? JAMES BOND. So I am thinking HSM will finally be neutered by a man that would make a great Colonel Gentleman.

  6. scooterzz says:

completely different audiences, io….tween girls and gay boys will be dampening their drawers at multiple viewings of hsm3…..

  7. IOIOIOI says:

Scoot: no doubt it will have a big number, but it will be slammed down the sheet a week later by Bond. So I am just confused why Disney would put this flick so close to a Bond film? Yes the audiences are different, but HSM easily had the potential to go two to three weeks at #1. This way they get a week of being the #1 movie in the US, and it sort of confounds me why an earlier October date was not used?
I am guess that answer would be a Saw film, but HSM is a freakin Franchise. It should have been placed in a date that gave the flick more considerable earning potential, then a week before a Bond film.

  8. Aladdin Sane says:

November 7th isn’t Hallowe’en. Just thought I’d point that out in regards to QoS.

  9. Blackcloud says:

QoS is released on Halloween in the UK, I believe. Perhaps that’s what IO means.

  10. IOIOIOI says:

My bad. I thought it was released on Halloween here in the US as well because of the poster Dark Horizons had. SO I guess HSM will still have to deal with a SAW movie, but the 24th just seems like a weird day to release that film.

  11. Hallick says:

Isn’t the High School Musical franchise past it’s prime already? This is anecdotal, but the ABC reality show is a flop; and where I work, around Christmastime, we had a stand alone display of the HSM 2 DVDs and, as of today, we still have 75% of those DVDs on a shelf.

  12. LexG says:

    HUDGENS OWNS.

  13. LexG says:

No one will give a shit about this or know who I’m talking about, but I’m watching Showtime and just saw an ad for a new reality series STARRING and ABOUT Eric Schaeffer, that COLOSSAL FUCKING MEGADOUCHE who made IF LUCY FELL and some other bullshit where he cast himself seemingly SOLELY to hit on models and actresses.
Obviously I’m mostly hating on this guy because that would TOTALLY be M.O., but WHOOOOOOO is the fanbase of ERIC SCHAEFFER?????
Why did we ever need to suffer through this TOOLBAG a second time, let alone have a show FOISTED UPON US THAT NO ONE WILL GIVE A FUCK ABOUT some 12 years later?
Is there ANY level of audience indifference that can EVER lead to someone in the biz being sent packing back to their Podunk to work at a video store?
Honestly, who is the audience for this shit and why is it sucking up time that someone new who doesn’t TOTALLY SUCK could occupy??????

  14. Joe Leydon says:

SHUT THE FUCK UP, LEX G. MIND THE GAP IS A FREAKING MASTERWORK, OK?
    http://www.variety.com/review/VE1117923462.html?categoryid=31&cs=1

  15. LexG says:

134 MINUTES?????? CASTING HIS OWN NON-FAMOUS, UNCHARISMATIC, NO-ONE-IN-AMERICA-KNOWS-WHO-HE-IS ASS in the third-billed role?????
    I N D U L G E N T.
This dude so obviously wants to be Woody Allen by way of Ed Burns, and THE PUBLIC HAS VOTED. We do not care. Please stop working in show business. The votes have been cast, sir, and you are not of interest to ANY of us.
This reminds me of my mention of LOREN DEAN last week; Is there EEEEEEEEEEEEEVER a point where the WHOLESALE AUDIENCE INDIFFERENCE to a hyped new artist completely shuts them out of show business? Like, nothing against the guy, but why is a Loren Dean still getting acting work? Why is he not managing a supermarket? He is not a star, he is not an interesting performer, there is not ONE PERSON IN THE WORLD who is interested in seeing him in a movie.
Just step aside and let someone else have a chance.

  16. Joe Leydon says:

Jesus, LexG: Obscurity has made you one BITTER ASS S.O.B.!!!!!!!!!!
    Good night.

  17. LexG says:

Sorry, Joe… For what it’s worth, I liked the actual review… and much respect to Alan King.
Just saying, to me this is like if there was a reality show devoted solely to Hal Hartley’s personal life. Only if he were more obscure.

  18. IOIOIOI says:

I would watch that show, Lex. Also, really, Schaffer is a weird fucking dude. Wirey Spindell remains one of the weirdest freakin movies, that I have ever seen.
The fact that that same d/w/p made that WHACKED-OUT MOVIE and now has a TV show. Makes sense in a weird way. He’s twisted, Showtime like twisted, and there you go.
    Next case…

  19. yancyskancy says:

What’s scary is that these networks won’t fart without looking at studies that break down which percentages of methane concentration appeal most to key demos. So maybe Schaeffer has an acceptable Q rating, against all odds.
Such indestructible careers almost make you feel for last-generation discards such as Klinton Spilsbury, who were limited to one shot.

  20. LexG says:

A Legend of the Lone Ranger reference = AWESOME!!!!
I feel a little bad, next morning on, for bagging on Schaeffer so hard… he just kind of blurs together with that 27 Dates (or whatever it was called) dork and the Date With Drew dork, and it’s personal jealousy that these dweeby guys have made a cottage industy of half-doc indie quirk fests that put them in league with hot Hollywood chicks.
If this Schaeffer thing is, against all odds, an actual hit, maybe Cinemax can fire back with THE STEVEN BAIGELMAN HOUR.
    What happened to that guy????

  21. jeffmcm says:

Ugh, Final Destination 1 and 3 are so much better than the David Ellis-directed 2.

  22. dietcock says:

re: Schaeffer, I thought Leydon was joking until I clicked the link to his Variety review. Wow. Gotta say, I’m with Lex on this one, wholeheartedly.
