The Lion in Autumn

The animated antics of Madagascar: Back 2 Africa roared to an estimated $63.3 million to corral about 45% of weekend ticket sales. Despite its dominance, there was still ample room for a potent bow for the teen comedy Role Model of $19.1 million to rank second. The third national newcomer – the urban musical comedy Soul Men – had a disappointing bow of $5.5 million.

In limited and niche debuts, occult thriller House had few bidders with $313,000 from 362 locations while the wartime dramaThe Boy in Striped Pajamas scored a sturdy $242,000 from its initial platform at 17 sites. There was also good response for the offbeat horror musical Repo! The Genetic Opera of $55,300 at eight theaters as well as the weird and oddly emotional JCVD of close to $22,000 from two screens. A number of single screen bows generated very encouraging initial numbers including the an $8,100 gross for the documentary Pray the Devil Back to Hell on recent political strife in Liberia.

The opening of the Madagascar sequel expanded sales considerably from both the prior frame and from the comparable 2007 session. Domestic box office currently stands at $8.22 billion for a slim 1% improvement from last year’s pace.

Expectations were high for Madagascar: Back 2 Africa, although pundits suggested a more cautious opening between $45 million and $50 million. Regardless the sequel’s bow was more than twice as big as its inspiration. A harbinger to its success came last weekend when it got an early premiere in Russia and the Ukraine and ran up record breaking box office of $18.1 million.

Last weekend’s top international grosser – Quantum of Silence – racked up $40 million from debuts in three countries. This weekend it added 57 nations and early estimates are for a $106.5 million gross that would rank it second only to the latestIndiana Jones opening this year. The film opens domestically on Friday and all tracking has it performing significantly stronger than Casino Royale’s $40 million launch in 2006.

Role Models launched a short, concentrated marketing campaign that proved both savvy and effective. Together with High School Musical 3 and Madagascar, the trio of pictures dominated sales for the under 25s and left the field open for adults who elected Changeling as first choice with a faint 22% downward tremble.

Soul Men, a raucous yarn about a musical reunion, failed to get elected and the commercial fate of W. took on lame duck status as its real life inspiration waits out a much later January departure.

The weekend’s new primary award season candidate, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, build a solid platform. The tale of friendship between a German boy and a Jewish lad in a concentration camp has already racked up $20 million in Spain and the UK where it was a bestseller and its tragic saga will require continued vigilance and critical support to push forward in the marketplace.

Among current contenders, both Rachel Getting Married and Happy-Go-Lucky expanded; the former now present in the top 25 markets. And both films maintained healthy screen averages with hopes of establishing a beachhead prior to the onslaught of kudos competitors that begins in earnest at Thanksgiving.

It shows how out of it I was in trying to be in it, acknowledging that I was out of it to myself, and then thinking, “Okay, how do I stop being out of it? Well, I get some legitimate illogical narrative ideas” — some novel, you know?

So I decided on three writers that I might be able to option their material and get some producer, or myself as producer, and then get some writer to do a screenplay on it, and maybe make a movie.

And so the three projects were “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep,” “Naked Lunch” and a collection of Bukowski. Which, in 1975, forget it — I mean, that was nuts. Hollywood would not touch any of that, but I was looking for something commercial, and I thought that all of these things were coming.

There would be no Blade Runner if there was no Ray Bradbury. I couldn’t find Philip K. Dick. His agent didn’t even know where he was. And so I gave up.

I was walking down the street and I ran into Bradbury — he directed a play that I was going to do as an actor, so we know each other, but he yelled “hi” — and I’d forgot who he was.

So at my girlfriend Barbara Hershey’s urging — I was with her at that moment — she said, “Talk to him! That guy really wants to talk to you,” and I said “No, fuck him,” and keep walking.

But then I did, and then I realized who it was, and I thought, “Wait, he’s in that realm, maybe he knows Philip K. Dick.” I said, “You know a guy named—” “Yeah, sure — you want his phone number?”

My friend paid my rent for a year while I wrote, because it turned out we couldn’t get a writer. My friends kept on me about, well, if you can’t get a writer, then you write.”
~ Hampton Fancher

“That was the most disappointing thing to me in how this thing was played. Is that I’m on the phone with you now, after all that’s been said, and the fundamental distinction between what James is dealing with in these other cases is not actually brought to the fore. The fundamental difference is that James Franco didn’t seek to use his position to have sex with anyone. There’s not a case of that. He wasn’t using his position or status to try to solicit a sexual favor from anyone. If he had — if that were what the accusation involved — the show would not have gone on. We would have folded up shop and we would have not completed the show. Because then it would have been the same as Harvey Weinstein, or Les Moonves, or any of these cases that are fundamental to this new paradigm. Did you not notice that? Why did you not notice that? Is that not something notable to say, journalistically? Because nobody could find the voice to say it. I’m not just being rhetorical. Why is it that you and the other critics, none of you could find the voice to say, “You know, it’s not this, it’s that”? Because — let me go on and speak further to this. If you go back to the L.A. Times piece, that’s what it lacked. That’s what they were not able to deliver. The one example in the five that involved an issue of a sexual act was between James and a woman he was dating, who he was not working with. There was no professional dynamic in any capacity.

~ David Simon
