I know I’m late to party, but The Hurt Locker just opened on this side of the Atlantic and I would like to say something. Really, really impressive movie. Visceral, intelligent, and psychologically rounded. The only real blips were
    ********SPOILER ALERT*************
When Sgt. James decides to sneak out and after the fuel tank is blown up. My only problems with them were that until then, the film had been sequential but between the sequences there was very little if any cause and effect. Each sequence was pretty much self-contained. But the two I listed suddenly lurched into a cause and effect scenario, which dangerously ran the risk of turning into a Bruce Willis hero-movie. In fact, I was rather reminded of the last act of The Deer Hunter when out of all the gin-joints in all the towns in all the world, DeNiro is able to track down Christopher Walken.
Loved the sequence looking for cereal. Suddenly James was faced with having to think for the first time. And I don’t mean that facetiously; I mean, when in the zone, he was intuiting. Here he was trying to diffuse a new kind of problem.
    *********SPOILER ALERT OVER***********
I very much hope that come awards’ season, Kathryn Bigelow is as near to front and centre as possible.

  2. Inglourious Basterds seems to be one of the truest examples this year of a movie getting great word of mouth. Still in the #2 position and very nearly at $100m. And it’s managed to only succumb to one movie (Final Destination), and even then, by next week the tables will be flipped again. And, conceivably, it should stay at – at least – #3 next weekend.

  3. LexG says:

Did anyone see THE BAADER-MEINHOF COMPLEX?
    A) Is it awesome?
    B) Is it anything I’m going to enjoy?

  4. a) No. It’s fairly decent, but not awesome.
    b) Probably not since it requires you to read and not just ogle hot chicks (of which there aren’t many of anyway).

  5. LexG says:

“Probably not since it requires you to read…”
Funny how so many people here think I’m some big dumb illiterate ape, when I’ve got an English Lit degree (with a concentration in Russian Lit), and I’ve done proofread, copy-editing, transcription and Q.C. jobs for YEARS which demand that my grammar, punct and spelling skillz are among the TOP 1% OF PEOPLE LIVING ON THIS PLANET.
I also have an I.Q. that is allegedly one of the highest ever recorded by man.

  6. I meant that all the reading would distract from the hot foreign broads who have loose morals and don’t wear bras.

Yeah, I wonder how anyone could have possible gotten that idea after month after month of “I WILL KILL MYSELF IF I DON’T GET VAG”.

  8. storymark says:

    Lex, I don’t think you’re illiterate.
As for the rest, if true, well, has anyone ever done so little with so much?
