Considering the talk about the demise of the movie star…
Brad Pitt is notching two $100M domestic grossers in a row. Neither movie is traditionally commercial. And neither movie features a traditional movie star role.
    Discuss..

  2. Mr. F. says:

Actually, I have another topic, since I’m a fan of a) sports and b) random hypothetical questions.
Michael Jordan was inducted today into the basketball Hall of Fame. The rule is, you have to have been retired from the game for five years. So let’s say this: Jordan retires early, as he did back in 94 or whenever. Rather than coming back, the five years pass. Wham: he makes it into the HOF on a unanimous decision.
But let’s say after 7 or 8 years, he goes back to the NBA. What’s the ruling? Does he get to remain a member of the HOF? Or do they pull everything and make him wait another five years before he can be re-inducted? (Or, least likely of all, is he barred from going back to the NBA?)
Like I said… random. But I’m expecting one of you to know — after all, I get all my sporting news from Dave Poland’s Hot Blog…

  3. Pitt is doing what stars are supposed to do… headline interesting movies that moviegoers would otherwise be interested in even if said performer was not in the lead. Having a big star in said movie is (at least these days) icing on the cake, a sort of safety bet in the selling of an otherwise marketable film. No man is an island and no movie star (with the exception of Will Smith and occasionally Jim Carrey) can lure fans into something that they wouldn’t otherwise have wanted to see.

  4. anghus says:

yeah, the movie star era is basically over. you named Brad Pitt. Sure. Will Smith. Tom Cruise. They can still get people into theaters.
But there’s hardly any new marquis names bringing people in.

  5. LexG says:

“But there’s hardly any new marquis names bringing people in.”
    KRISTEN. STEWART.

  6. EthanG says:

“Brad Pitt is notching two $100M domestic grossers in a row. Neither movie is traditionally commercial. And neither movie features a traditional movie star role.”
    It means NOTHING.
Just more backup that it’s all about the role and marketing and other than Tyler Perry and Will Smith, no one can bring in $50 million on name alone.
I dont think anyone on this blog (who has seen the movie in question) will dispute that “Assasination of Jesse James is EASILY Pitt’s best performance of the last few years, and likely ever, and because it was dumped, it barely grossed a million bucks. There was MASSIVE marketing put behind Button and Basterds, and non-traditional or not, the movies were high concept and liable to reel people in. How did District 9 make $100 million??? Was Pitt front and center in Basterd’s marketing campaign. YES. He was definitely a key ingredient in this success. But again it all depends on the concept/movie/marketing money…pit as Jesse James should grab a tenth the money Johnny Depp did as John Dillinger right? Wrong…
“But let’s say after 7 or 8 years, he goes back to the NBA. What’s the ruling? Does he get to remain a member of the HOF? Or do they pull everything and make him wait another five years before he can be re-inducted? (Or, least likely of all, is he barred from going back to the NBA?)”
Well this almost happened with Magic Johnson…and yeah he gets to remain a member if this were to happen. This is the same as asking if Larry Bird would have gotten his membership revoked if he’d continued being succesful as a coach with the Indiana Pacers.

  7. EthanG says:

New issue…one think that hasn’t been covered about Tyler Perry issues is that not only do they have low production costs…but they also have EXTREMELY low P&A costs. “I Can Do Bad…” is Perry’s widest release…at a whopping 2,255 theatres (aka significantly less than the average wide release which is over 800 theatres more). His per theatre average is redic…

  8. Aris P says:

Larry Gelbart RIP. I know what dvds I’ll be cracking open tonight.

  9. The Big Perm says:

EthanG, that’s been true of all movie stars. I don’t know if there have been too many stars who, regardless of genre, was able to bring in a huge crowd When stars would stray from what they were known for is when they had trouble.

  10. palmermj says:

“But let’s say after 7 or 8 years, he goes back to the NBA. What’s the ruling? Does he get to remain a member of the HOF? Or do they pull everything and make him wait another five years before he can be re-inducted? (Or, least likely of all, is he barred from going back to the NBA?)”
He remains in the Hall. Best comparison i can make is Joe Gibbs. he retired after the 1992 season and went into the Hall four years later. Then, in 2004 he returned.
    He stayed in the hall.
Each sport might have a different rule, although most have five.
it’s sort of unfair that a guy who actually plays the game has to wait five years, but an owner, league official or coach doesn’t have to wait that long. I never got that rule.

  11. Mr. F. says:

EthanG: I had forgotten about the “other” M.J. (Magic)… but he had been retired for four years when he came back, so it never came up. And Bird could coach while in the HOF… he just never tried *playing* again.
Palmer: Hadn’t thought of Joe Gibbs, but I assume coaches don’t have the limitations (like you said). I think the need to wait is sensible — look at what happened to Mark McGwire, for example — but it should apply to EVERYONE in the sport, including coaches, owners, etc. (I think MLB has that rule, no?)

  12. Mr. F. says:

Aris: I hope you made time for TOOTSIE — IMO, Gelbart’s work of genius (no, I wasn’t a huge fan of MASH).
Speaking of Gelbart, heard an interesting story about him on NPR this morning. His father was a barber, whose most well-known customer for years was Danny Thomas. One time, after a haircut, Gelbart’s father gave Thomas an envelope containing some jokes his son had written. Thomas took them back to his office, actually read them, and thought they were funny — so much so that he gave Larry his first job, as a writer on Thomas’s show… when Larry was only 16. Talk about a break!
The moral of the story: become a barber — it will do wonders for your childrens’ careers.

  13. LexG says:

Holy shit, did anyone see Kanye West come out on MTV and STRAIGHT-OWN Taylor Swift? Why is every pussy in the world all offended by that? That was a TEXTBOOK example of someone getting OWNED: They should have rubber-stamped “PWNED” on her dumbstruck, agape expression. That was some STRAIGHT DURDEN SHIT on West’s part and the kind of thing WE NEED MORE OF at bullshit celebrity events, especially ones that DON’T MEAN A THING.
I’m sure she’s a nice gal, she’s certainly hot, but Christ, lady, YOU’RE IN SHOWBIZ. Improv a little or deflate the situation with a laugh line. She came back out a SECOND TIME… and still didn’t make light of it or defuse the situation? Don’t those Jonas Pussies she’s always hang out with have some Disney show? Hasn’t this chick picked up some light comedy improv skillz OR SELF-DEPRECATION just by osmosis?
BOO-YEAH. KANYE POWER. I don’t even usually listen to the dude but that was FULL AWESOME.
Also, what the hell? I take FOUR DAYS OFF and this place is a tomb. I know 98% of the readers are in Toronto, but the 2% that aren’t but do 98% of the posting? What, is there an Asexual Douche Convention in L.A.? Everyone’s always all, “I wish that annoying Lex would stop posting so we could talk about fun movie stuff!” I stayed away all weekend and “WITHOUT ME TO LEAD YOU, KICKING AND SCREAMING” (GOOD QUOTE), you came up with NOOOOOOOOOTHING.

  14. LYT says:

I was busy making a movie about an insecure, overweight guy who wants to get laid but can’t talk to women. Then he ends up killing like ten of them because they bug him too much. I fully expect you to buy a copy when it’s done.
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1502403/
And waiting for you to tell me if Sorority Row is worth the money.

  15. LexG says:

Holy shit, Lou the King of Acting. I’ll indeed check it out.
I was gonna email you the ROW review but I’ll just post some thoughts here as a public service: It’s pretty fucking awful, though entertaining… sort of.
Amusing how even with the decidedly D-list cheesecake in the lead roles (two of them being reality show vets), none of them are willing to take it off, so it falls on the extras and day players to be (tamely) naked around the periphery. Like, back in the ’70s, serious name actresses did nudity for “their art.” Nowawadays, even AUDRINA PATRIDGE is too good to take it off on film.
Basically exactly what you’d expect: Catty chicks trading barbs, getting hacked up… no particular imagination or suspense, kind of grubbily directed, and a bit overlong. Couple of chuckles courtesy of the frat-tool boyfriend characters. And BRIANA EVIGAN is a STAR in the making, if she’d ever do an actual good movie. Very sexy and charismatic, but no acting skills were really required here.
I’d peg it as lamer than Final Destination 4, but not unwatchable.
But “Whiteout” was something else. Can someone explain how that thing is BASED ON A COMIC BOOK? That’s like telling me 16 BLOCKS or DOUBLE JEOPARDY was a Marvel superhero franchise.
It’s just some sluggish, terrestrial potboiler featuring the least mysterious mystery ever put to film, and paced like a 1971 TV drama. It’s almost kind of fascinating, in that I genuinely have no idea what they were even attempting. It has Sena’s usual weird synthetic soundstage closeups, but he usually gives his stuff a little more of a pulp kick. This was like “Mindhunters” on downers.

  16. LYT says:

I just watched ALTERED STATES on Netflix streaming. Terrible transfer, with a constant popping sound on the audio that I don’t think was intentional, but damn, what a great movie.

  17. christian says:

Kanye West is a douchebag. Nuff said.

  18. IOIOIOI says:

Lex, there are many types of comics. Seriously, open your eyes, and go screw a plumper! Your kind tend to keep together.
Chris, nah, he’s just a repressed man who hates white people. He’s got a lot of work to do on himself.

  19. Nicol D says:

    Lex,
I actually agree with much of what you post but I have to disagree with you on Taylor Swift/Kanye.
My first reaction is why doesn’t someone have the balls to get on stage and call one of these woman hating pussy ass no talent rapper hacks out to a fight. Go all Russell Crowe and telephone their ass.
I’ve noticed that most of these pansy ass rappers are only tough when they have a 300 ton posse behind them and a gun in their pocket. And they only attack young female artists. Oh right, M & M attacked Moby.
    Real tough.
If Kanye or M & M feels like a man by insulting teenage girls, I’d love to see someone like a Crowe or Stallone reef on their ass.
Sadly, are there no “tough” singers in the music biz that will call these asshats out. Get the Gallagher brothers a 5th of 90 proof rum and let them have a go!

  20. Wrecktum says:

Sinatra would have had Kanye’s balls in a sling. Pussy on toast.

  21. martin says:

That might be true Wrecktum, but Kanye was right, Beyonce’s video is better than Taylor’s. It is in fact one of the best music videos of all time.

  22. Mr. F. says:

What’s worse, it isn’t even the first time Kanye’s pulled this stunt:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VxKIcrDsJAs

  23. Wrecktum says:

You’re right, martin. And it won Video of the Year, did it not?
Christ, are the VMAs still relevant?

  24. Mr. F. says:

Martin: the bigger reason Kanye looked like a giant d-bag was mostly because… Beyonce ended up winning for Best Video of the year. Not the less important “Best Female Video” that Taylor got. If he had just kept his gay-fish-loving mouth shut, everything would have been fine.
The BIGGEST shock of the night, however, was learning that MTV apparently still shows music videos… who knew??

  25. LexG says:

Look, I’ll say again: Swift just stood there like a stunned dunce with this look of, “Daddy, the mean man is picking on me! DO SOMETHING!”
Lady, you are IN SHOW BIZ. Show some improv chops and save the situation with a WITTY LINE or say something SELF-DEPRECATING. The fact that she did not suggests she can’t roll with the punches, and is a spoiled brat. She got OWNED and didn’t even defend herself. WEAK.
And, Nicol, if in a roomful of so-called “tough guys,” NO ONE stood up and got in Kanye’s face, that makes his AWESOME MOVE even more Durden-esque.
It is truly remarkable how far out of their way most people will go to avoid a confrontation. As long as no one’s gonna say anything back, why shouldn’t KW commandeer shit and just change the air in the room?
This is one of those AWESOME MOMENTS, like Alec Baldwin yelling at his kid, or Hasselhoff eating a burger drunk, or Sean Young mocking that blowhard Diving Bell director, where everyone has to go above and beyond the call to put on this moralistic, disingenuous air of mock-outrage… while still watching it and laughing.
At least own up to the fact that it was fun to watch.

  26. martin says:

She was in complete shock. The whole thing is hilarious and classic, and will be parodied for many years to come. I don’t know what’s wrong with Kanye but we need more mentally unstable entertainers out there. Remember, it’s entertainment people, like we really need another young popstar crying about how she won a music video award? The funniest thing to me is that Kanye takes these awards so seriously, it’s just classic.

  27. Nicol D says:

    But Lex,
Let’s be honest. Part of the main reason that rappers get away with so much of the shit they do is that they are willing to use guns to kill people. Period.
Anyone who stands up to Kanye or M& M knows that for the next few years they may be marked. They may be in a studio and a couple of flunky 300 lb assholes walk in and kill them. That is the world these assholes hang in. That is why people do not stand up to them. That does not make them Durdenesque. These are the assholes Tyler Durden should be pounding the crap out of in a back alley.
West picked on Swift, because he probably wants to bang her and knows she would never go for it.

  28. LexG says:

    Nicol,
I sincerely doubt Kanye West, with his Dean’s List ass and who names each successive album after one of his various Ivy League diplomas and advanced degrees, is gonna actually throw down and SHOOT SOMEBODY on a live awards show.

  29. The Big Perm says:

At least Swift got up right afterward and performed a song and looked fine. It’s not like she got owned and then took her YouTube videos down or anything.

  30. Nicol D says:

    Lex,
Never said he would. But I guarntee you if someone ever pulled that same shit on Kanye he would put a price on their head and that person would be made to look over their shoulder for years to come. He wouldn’t pull the gun. But one of his posse might months down the line.
Why else do you think these people get away with it. Because everyone knows most of these guys are insane. I don’t know how many degrees West may have but I am sure that is an eon ago to the world he is in now.
I am actually surprised to hear you taking his side in this.

  31. leahnz says:

‘altered states’ IS a great flick
“My first reaction is why doesn’t someone have the balls to get on stage and call one of these woman hating pussy ass no talent rapper hacks out to a fight. Go all Russell Crowe and telephone their ass.”
oh, you’re so ‘street’ nicol, you tell those big mean middle-class rappers a thing or two. and poor little hapless women-folk couldnt possibly stand up for themselves, they need big tough men (like sylvester and russell??? wtf?) to come to their rescue lest they get the vapours and faint dead away from offence to their delicate sensibilities
(the word ‘publicity stunt’ comes to mind, the lot of ’em are just a bunch of carefully manicured posers)

  32. Nicol D says:

    Hey Leahnz,
Havin’ a great start to the fall! So glad you came out to play!
You’re a pretty angry person aren’t you? And those rappers are not middle class. Statistically they are some of the wealthiest people who have ever lived in history.
Oh…wait…you actually buy into the notion that they are part of the oppressed and downtrodden. Y’know there was a film that played at TIFF yesterday aimed just at people like you. Filled with publicity stunts that people like you will never question.
One guess as to what it was? Quick, I’ll be back!

  33. Wrecktum says:

I know that Nicol is just trolling here, but he does need to be careful. There’s not a great semantic difference between “these people” and “those people.” I hope no one takes the bait.

  34. leahnz says:

i’m not angry in the slightest, NIC, i’m all good, i just think you’re a fuckwit!
(please come up with something better than: ‘you’re angry!’, snooze-o-rama. because i think it is in fact YOU who is an angry, paranoid man)
“Oh…wait…you actually buy into the notion that they are part of the oppressed and downtrodden.”
uh, no, thee of little wit (i think ‘nitwit’ may be the proper term), my point was they are NOT downtrodden badasses but nice boys from middle-class homes who act ‘gansta’ so they have ‘cred’
and people like me? do tell (and again: use your thesaurus so you needn’t trot out ‘angry’ for the umpteenth time. bon chance!)

  35. Nicol D says:

    Hey Leahnz,
If you want to convince people you are not an angry bitter person, you should not lace your responses with angry bitter verbage like “fuckwit”.
You should also not instigate arguments with posters who do not interact with you. You see if you do these things, people will think you are angry.
And you know, I think I will stay with the word angry. It just has a certain “je ne sais quoi” to it.
Other words either say too much or too little. Upset…not strong enough. Malicious…too strong. No…I will stay with angry to describe you from here on in.
Oh, and bitter. That’s how I see you, too. Very angry and bitter.
    Au revoir ma petite chou.

  36. Nicol D says:

    Wrecktum,
“These people” refers to rappers. It is you who are trolling. You want people to start a race-based argument. You are too transparent.
    Try again, asshat.

  37. Nicol D says:

    …also in my original post I also referred to M & M who last time I checked..was not…oh nevermind.

  38. Wrecktum says:

Hey, Nicol. You’re being deliberately obtuse. Even whiteboy canucks know that almost every rapper is black. Dropping Eminem’s name isn’t a trump card to race bait. Stop it with the “who me?” innocent crap.

  39. LYT says:

Whiteboy Canucks might have their rap-racial perceptions skewed by the sheer awesomeness of this dude…
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D39Lm_HRfOs

  40. Eric says:

It’s worth noting that the particular rapper discussed here, Kanye West, grew up in a middle-class suburb of Chicago and has rapped about being a gangsta approximately never.
Eminem, too, grew up in some difficult circumstances but to my knowledge was never gang-affiliated.
So Nicol chose some poor examples. But please, keep going, it’s really informative.

  41. jeffmcm says:

Did Nicol refer to Marshall ‘Eminem’ Mathers as ‘M & M’?
    WHAT A BURN!!!!!!

  42. jeffmcm says:

Oh, wow. Now that I read the whole thread, Nicol really is hauling out the vile today. Gotta go.

  43. leahnz says:

    oh dearest NIC,
i don’t feel the need to convince anyone of anything (least of all you, for whom ‘fuckwit’ is the PERFECT description)
“You should also not instigate arguments with posters who do not interact with you”
but you do interact with me. you just did. and you have in the past. so you are nonsensical.
ftr, this was my original comment to you:
“oh, you’re so ‘street’ nicol, you tell those big mean middle-class rappers a thing or two. and poor little hapless women-folk couldnt possibly stand up for themselves, they need big tough men (like sylvester and russell??? wtf?) to come to their rescue lest they get the vapours and faint dead away from offence to their delicate sensibilities”
i am perfectly entitled to comment on your comments — i believe that is what a byob is for –which i found typically inane and sexist (those poor hapless girls need a MACHO MAN to come to their rescue from some idiot, they can’t possibly look after themselves!) and deluded (THOSE PEOPLE are gun-toting murdering gansta mad men!).
my comment was perfectly valid and completely on the subject of the content of your comments, and the only thing i called you was ‘street’. it was YOU who did not address the content of my comment and made it personal with the tired ol’ ‘angry person’ and ‘people like YOU’ comments, it is YOU who started a personal argument instead of addressing the subject at hand. i only called you a fuckwit after you yet again proved what a fuckwit you are.
(but you stick with ‘angry’ and ‘bitter’, it perfectly suits your lack of personality imagination. bless)

  44. christian says:

“The fact that she did not suggests she can’t roll with the punches, and is a spoiled brat. She got OWNED and didn’t even defend herself. WEAK.”
Do you think she’ll pull her videos down because Kanye dissed her?

  45. Nicol D says:

    Wrecktum,
“Hey, Nicol. You’re being deliberately obtuse. Even whiteboy canucks know that almost every rapper is black. Dropping Eminem’s name isn’t a trump card to race bait. Stop it with the “who me?” innocent crap.”
No Wrecktum. You are the race baiter. You are the one who wanted to start a fight based on race. Period. Had I not mentioned M & M you would have then called me racist for not mentioning him to show not all rappers are black. You start at the conclusion that I am a racistbigothomophobeetc. and then twist my words to be that.
You are the one who is race obsessed. My comment of “these people” was directed at rappers and rap culture. Not at anyone else. Whether or not the majority of rappers are black or not is irrelevant. The majority of heavy metal bands are white. That does not mean that any generalization against metal culture is about all white people. You are the one who sees things through the prism of race and wanted to flame a race argument.
You are the troll here, sir. Not I. Love your comment about me being a “whiteboy” to show how hip you are. Bravo wrecktum. Bravo! A kewpie doll to the race baiter.
    Leahnz,
“…which i found typically inane and sexist (those poor hapless girls need a MACHO MAN to come to their rescue from some idiot, they can’t possibly look after themselves!)”
No, Leahnz you did not find my post sexist at all. You merely hate me and had to find a way to twist my words to try to make them sexist. It was a canned sense of outrage if ever I read one. Just because you are free to respond does not make your comments not angry and bitter. I never interact with you unless you start it.
And if you really want to pick this fight…perhaps girls like Taylor Swift do need men like myself to argue to defend them. God knows left wing feminists like yourself who allow jokes to be made by late night comedians condoning the rape of teen girls and left wing men like a former ex president to treat women like dish rags sure won’t stick up for them.
Leahnz, I do not know how much you follow North American culture but a lot has changed in a few years. If anything, the archetype of the strong women has turned right and left wing feminist women are increasingly being question for letting so much trash behaviour by men whose politics they agree with slide. For many, the treatment of Palin showed leftwing women like you could not care less about women. You only care about people (men and women) who share your own views.
With leftists like you to defend women Leahnz…women need all the help they can get. I’ll even go one step further. I would never say all left wing men treat women like dirt but all of the men who treat women like dirt that I know are staunch left wing. They justify it by saying that it is the women’s choice to be with them. You can’t get away with this anymore. You cannot hide behind your left-wing feminist facade.
But of course you never even condemned Kanye instead saying it was staged (it was not). Let’s hear it for Leahnz. Every woman’s best friend so long as they do not expect any support when left wing men treat them like dirt.
Leahnz would rather no one condemn left-wing Kanye than take a stand for a 19 year old girl. Something tells me on that stage last night, Swift would have loved it if someone stood up for her. Guaranteed. But being the audience was filled with music industry types…no one would.
Bravo my little angry bitter pill. Bravo.

  46. Triple Option says:

Was the HoF sufficiently answered? I’m having a hard time thinking of who, it might’ve been Mario Lemieux, who initially retired from the NHL for health reasons. In an amazing rarity, they waived the waiting period and put his straight into the Hall. A few years later, health improves, he goes back to playing. They took his bust down. Once he retired again they put his bust back up. I’m pretty sure that’s standard for all the major leagues. They reserve the spot but take the player down. Once he’s retired again, they immediately put the shrine back up.

  47. Eric says:

Hey Nicol, I know it’s fun to spat with other commenters, but let’s stay on topic. Do you think you could address what I wrote? Specifically, please discuss how the point you made was totally undermined by the fact that the musicians you’re discussing have nothing to do with the culture your slander implies.
Oh, and maybe at the same time you could tell us what you’ve learned from your errors? Something like “It was a mistake to generalize about things that I know jack shit about?”
That would be great, because then you might have some credibility around here instead of just being the guy who generalizes about things you know jack shit about.

  48. Lota says:

So Leah is bitter and angry fro calling you a fuckwit–almost a term of endearment from en-zed, yet you can call Wrecktum an asshat. I get that makes you hypocritical instead of angry.
Hip hop, rhyming, urban drum & bass…lots of people do ‘rapping’ almost none are gangsters who are going to pop a cap in your ass if you Dis…so please enough of your No how Nicol. Not everybody is straight outta Compton and even some of those who were weren’t involved in organized crime, just poor. No crime in being poor and wearing bling when you have enough change.
Kanye is a complete asshole and I hope he gets himself banned from awards shows for a year or two since he clearly doesn;t know how to behave like an adult. Has nothing to do with rap and everything to do with a spoiled brat (Kanye).
my disgust at Nicol’s typical urban “no-how” is short-lived however as he is as important as a flea in an infestation.
    ***************
More important things: I am overcome by my grief for the Swayze.
Patrick Swayze made some great films…and I worshipped his 80s feathered mullet. : (
Roadhouse for all of its cheesyness still was class cheese and had Ben Gazzara as a great over the top loathsome baddy and Sam Elliot, my favorite movie biker dude.
    “pain don;t hurt” RIP Dalton. : (

  49. Lota says:

FOR not fro…and I guess that makes you a hypocrite instead of ‘get’.
hey Leah, I am working with someone in art down there now in En-Zed. I wish y’all weren’t half into the next day.
I hope there is a proper mourning for Swayze down Undah.

  50. leahnz says:

aw lota, i just heard about swayze’s death, very sad indeed. not exactly a shock given his battle with cancer but wow, gone way too soon, what a bummer. i hope his family is coping ok 🙁
(hey ms. lota, what do you mean by ‘someone in art’, like art direction? are they in the wellywood hood?)
good grief nicol, i can’t even be bothered responding to most of that predictably pompous, sanctimonious, circa-1955 misguided generalising blather, apart from this:
YES, i did find your post sexist, which is precisely why i commented as such. leahnz this, leahnz that; don’t presume to tell me or comment on what i really think or what i mean or what i stand for, you annoying little fucker
half my family lives in north america, so don’t give me your ‘real feminists are now right wing’ bullshit, save your delusional lectures for someone who give a toss
and your generalisations about left wing men being the men who treat women like crap are LAUGHABLE; your ideas about ‘real feminism’ are backwards one-eyed presumptions that suit your limited world view (you don’t have the first clue what it’s like to be a woman or what it means to be a feminist, and i’m not going to waste my finger-tapping time on setting you straight because frankly i can’t bothered on you); and your ignorant, sanctimonious, paranoid vitriol is tiresome
re: kanye, he’s obviously a huge tool but it’s only a stupid awards show, it’s not like he got up on stage and abused taylor and slapped her around, he made a giant fool of/embarrassed himself. taylor swift was at a loss but she’ll be fine, having had a first-hand lesson in idiocy from which she will learn and move on, while kanye will continue to be an arrogant tosser

“I would never say all left wing men treat women like dirt but all of the men who treat women like dirt that I know are staunch left wing.”
Funny, the ones I know that hit and bully women are staunch conservatives. The right espouses an anti-coddling meme as a glimpse at any rightie site will reveal. Spare the rod and all that. Not to say there aren’t left wing wife-beaters. But repression breeds violence and let’s face it, conservatives are repressed as Hell.
And you’re pathetic shots at leannz are borne of the exact un-subtle sexism that created feminists.

  52. christian says:

    “your” pathetic shots. egads.

  53. leahnz says:

    :-* christian, you’re a kool kat
(most of the dudes who comment here would appear to have a liberated, healthy attitude towards woman in general, and most would also appear to skew liberal)

Kanye is batshit crazy when it comes to awards. He’s the very definition of a sore loser when he’s snubbed. And now, apparently, when his friends are snubbed.
Most awards mean nothing; the VMAs even less than most. But whatever their voting process is, I assume Swift won fair and square, and that should’ve been that. Kanye’s stunt was undeniably good TV, but he came off like a tool. Sorry, Lex, I don’t see the OWNAGE. It’s an egotistical prick stealing a sweet young pop-country singer’s moment at a dumb award show, not Joseph N. Welch putting Senator McCarthy in his place.

  55. The Big Perm says:

It’s hilarious that Nicol sees a rapper and automatically assumes they have posses out to kill anyone who says anything bad about their leader. Nicol, you so crazy!
That’s “black talk” for you’re crazy.

  56. “If you want to convince people you are not an angry bitter person, you should not lace your responses with angry bitter verbage like “fuckwit”.”
Leah is from New Zealand. Australians and New Zealanders throw around curse words like they’re nouns. Doesn’t make us angry. We’re just… expressive. (I should mention that using one curse word on here is equal to about five in real life. Ratios are fun!)
“Lady, you are IN SHOW BIZ. Show some improv chops and save the situation with a WITTY LINE or say something SELF-DEPRECATING.”
She’s an innocuous country/pop singer who’s 19 years old. But, as Perm says, at least she hasn’t erased all her music from the world because somebody didn’t like her, which is more than we can say for you. Taylor Swift > Kanye West > LexG

oh, thank you for bringing that up kam, seriously! so true, and i really should have mentioned it before in my own defence but it always seems to slip my mind –probably because i’m in the middle of calling someone a bloody fuckwit tosspot wanker fuckface (altho i never curse around my boy because he’s like a parrot and i have some weird, likely outdated notion that he’s not allowed to swear like a sailor until he’s an adult and out of the house)
yes, swift is just a baby really, not exactly a seasoned show-biz performer with pithy one-liners come-backs at the ready anytime someone disses her, kanye storming the stage was probably the very last thing in the world she expected

  58. LexG says:

Hey, don’t get me wrong, Swift is a prime piece of ASHE, and I’d crush that ass if given the opportunity. BOO-YAH.
But she could’ve improved SOMETHING. Or at least NOT GIVEN THE SAME PRE-PLANNED MUNDANE SPEECH when given a SECOND opportunity.
I can promise you that THE TWIN GODDESSES OF HOTNESS AND BRILLIANT ACTING, one Kristen Stewart and one Megan Fox would’ve SEIZED that moment and done the FEMINIST THING and EMPOWERED THEMSELVES and gotten a HUGE OVATION with some awesome, ass-kicking comeback.
    Because they ARE GOD.

  59. leahnz says:

well, that ass-crushing thing is creepy but you’re right, lex, in that ideally taylor should have been able to think outside the square and given kanye some well-deserved shit, but she’s a singer and not an actress; actors are more accustomed to improvising, and fox and k-stew – tho still very young – are likely positively grizzled, jaded and world-weary compared to young swift
