Nut Job John Nolte Confuses "The Black List" With The Untalented

Someone sent me a rather insane screed by this guy, John Nolte, who tries to keep right-wing hope alive at “Big Hollywood,” Andrew Breitbart’s silly site. (“Want to hear why the #2 box office film this week is going to get your daughter raped by Commies? Click Here!”)
It’s not really easy to pile the Old Media LA Times and EW, gossip sheet Movieline, and self-acknowledged left wing site, The Huffington Post into one conspiracy. But this guy tries really hard.
You see… there is a conspiracy against conservatives… and you need to know!!!
One guy, Jonathan Kahn, is a victim of Patrick Goldstein because Goldstein has the temerity to point out that he has never had a film career to speak of. But it turns out that this guy does have a relationship in the record business, as noted in the Wall Street Journal…
“One person stunned to hear of Mr. Kahn

“He is also known to be a complete pain in the ass, a raging egomaniac on sets, and many kinds of sexual pervert. (I will leave it at that. There will be no lawsuit. His trailer can be a scary place.)”
David, don’t you think this is kind of a cheap shot? The sort of thing you (rightly) criticize other people for writing?

  2. David Poland says:

    Cheap in what way?
    Not kidding.
This guy was claiming a conspiracy against him… and I am offering that his biggest career problem has been his behavior.
Trying to figure out what complaint I’ve made that you would consider an accusation of this kind of thing being bad.

  3. Just getting it out of the way now but…
    Oh, shut up Nicol.
    Carry on.

  4. Joe Leydon says:

You are accusing Robert Davi of being a “sexual pervert.” Now unless you can back that up with some solid info — dates, names, detailed accusations — that’s a pretty chickenshit thing to do.

  5. Geoff says:

The Big Hollywood folks are the biggest bunch of humorless dorks you will ever read – they find anti-Conservative conspiracies in everything.

  6. mutinyco says:

“…and many kinds of sexual pervert. (I will leave it at that. There will be no lawsuit. His trailer can be a scary place.)”
So…you’re suggesting there were worse places for Corey Feldman to have spent his time besides Neverland Ranch…
Unless he was more into Chunk…

  7. Crow T Robot says:

    Gossip (noun) —
    1. Rumor or talk of a personal, sensational, or intimate nature.
    2. A person who habitually spreads intimate or private rumors or facts.

  8. Krillian says:

Clint Eastwood is one of the hottest directors of the decade, after all these years. Gary Sinise has his CSI: NY for a while now. Adam Baldwin’s great on Chuck but will always be known as Jayne on the best sci-fi show ever to not get a second season. Bruce Willis still gets work. Dennis Hopper’s got Crash. Jon Voight still gets regular work, as does James Woods. Mel Gibson, Sly Stallone’s re-emerged. Kelsey Grammer, I’m sure, will get another TV show that’s better than Hank. Patricia Heaton has The Middle (which is a good show). So…

  9. christian says:

And look at the struggle to keep 24 on the air…

  10. David Poland says:

I was in the room, Joe. Does that work for you?

  11. dietcock says:

Davi is a well-known method actor. So maybe DP was “in the room” while Davi was preparing for his tour de force role in “Showgirls?”

  12. LexG says:

Adam Baldwin has a column on BH and that dude never wants for work in cool projects, and gets to go to work every day on a show with the MOST BEAUTIFUL WOMAN ON TV/
    STRAHOVSKI POWER. SOOOOOOOOOO HOT.

  13. Stella's Boy says:

I second Krillian. Whenever I hear someone griping about a conservative blacklist in Hollywood (or something along those lines), I think of all the out & proud conservatives in Hollywood, working steadily. Hollywood cares about the green more than the red or blue. I forgot about all the Robert Davi movies getting wide theatrical releases prior to his politics being known.

  14. chris says:

Egad. DP first implied, then flat-out wrote, that he witnessed the behavior to which he refers. How on earth could that not be enough?

  15. Foamy Squirrel says:

I’m not sure if the quibble is over DP is accurate – I think Joe’s beef is because DP is saying “I know something bad about this guy, but I’m not going to tell you what it is”.

  16. Joe Leydon says:

Foamy: Actually, what I am saying is, that’s a pretty damn serious accusation. I would think David — who’s had to face similar accusations regarding, ahem, “ham spanking” — might think twice before repeating such gossip. And no, just because he claims to be an eyewitness doesn’t make it any less gossipy.
But what the hell: If he wants to do what he criticizes other people for doing, he won’t be the first person in the blogosphere to do so.

  17. Stella's Boy says:

Wasn’t DP trying to explain that there are reasons for Robert Davi’s station in Hollywood that have nothing to do with conspiracies or political beliefs, some of which he knows from firsthand experience?

  18. chris says:

Joe: A few reasons this is not that.
    1. DP has said he was there and car verify it, not some other person. The ham thing had no source.
    2. So far, anyway, nobody is calling bs on Poland. That story was described as a lie by multiple people.
    3. DP cites the Davi thing as a reason, among many, Davi may not have had the career he hoped. The ham story had no apparent purpose other than to embarrass people.

  19. Joe Leydon says:

Well, it also had the effect of making it impossible for me to ever again read, say or hear the expression “brand spanking new” without bursting out into laughter.

  20. David Poland says:

    Joe… stupid analogy. Sorry.
Roger Friedman making up lies about me – foundational mistake… make sure I EVER even walked into the EW offices in NY, where Owen works – and having it spread by someone trying to get Roger in trouble (which is why I think those were published), is, indeed, scurrilous and easily disproved without me lifting a hand. (No pun intended.)
But even as you want to be right here – you’re not – you have to admit that there is a difference between someone saying that they caught me whacking off in the EW mens room themselves and someone saying that they heard this story about it. As you must know, everyone who told the GEre gerbil story had a friend/cousin/other personal authority who was in the waiting room or the assessment room when Gere came in… which, of course, never happened.
Sadly, your kind of spin is actually why gossip keeps playing as news. You are the one blurring the line in this case. You pretend to seek honor, but you degrade me and equate an eyewitness account (and many second-hand accounts that were unsolicited and in identifiable detail) to something you know to be a lie. And you smirk while doing it.
This is what I don’t get about you, Joe. You really, really seem to be earnest and well-intended. But you lower yourself in order to try to win your point way too often. Then it gets personal and petty in an hurry. Or you make a weak joke… like that releases you from responsibility for being aggressive and wrong.
Maybe you just plain think that mentioning Davi’s bad personal habits is a cheap shot. Period. That argument can be made. Maybe I was too enthusiastic about batting down the idiotic position that Davi’s been blacklisted in some way for being a rightie.
But you… you dredge up something you know to be lie… why?… to win?… to hurt me?…
THAT is a cheap shot, my friend. Cheap as it comes. And it suggests that your entire choice to engage is insincere.

  21. Joe Leydon says:

“Maybe you just plain think that mentioning Davi’s bad personal habits is a cheap shot. Period. That argument can be made. Maybe I was too enthusiastic about batting down the idiotic position that Davi’s been blacklisted in some way for being a rightie.”
    Yes and yes.

  22. David Poland says:

Happy to have that conversation with you.
You don’t have to start a pissing match to engage.

  23. jeffmcm says:

It’s a shame that Nolte is more interested in making himself and his followers into victims and not actually talking about, you know, film and art and aesthetics and values.

  24. LYT says:

Nolte wouldn’t be a visible writer at all if not for the right-wing angle that he honed at Liberty Film Fest, and perfected with Breitbart once the Libertas folks seemingly disappeared off the scene completely.
Asking him to drop that gimmick is like asking Ebert to stop Twittering so much.

  25. Nicol D says:

“He is also known to be a complete pain in the ass, a raging egomaniac on sets, and many kinds of sexual pervert. ”
Are you talking about Roman Polanksi, Dave?
    Get my point.
“Someone sent me a rather insane screed by this guy, John Nolte, who tries to keep right-wing hope alive at “Big Hollywood,” Andrew Breitbart’s silly site. (“Want to hear why the #2 box office film this week is going to get your daughter raped by Commies? Click Here!”)”
What are their hits compared to yours? Just curious. As for the quotation…is that something you really read there or are you pulling it out of your posterior. You should know quotes are only used to directly attribute a direct source. If not, you are part of the internet problem. This is beneath the old Dave P, I loved in 2004. You have so changed, sir.
I suspect more people like yourself are paying attention to BH because for better or worse they are getting traction with thier argument.
And please do not patronize us with your “no talent argument”. Just the other day my partner asked me who the hell Russel Brand was and why he was getting big gigs all of a sudden. All I could think of was he is known for banging KP and trashing Bush. How the hell does a piece of shit like MacGruber get made?
Look at left wing goddess Tina Fey…her crappy little show “I’m Lizzing…I’m Lizzing” is a ratings flop and can’t get it up over 60 in the ratings.
You are going to tell me with a straight face her facile politics aren’t a factor in its renewal?
You are noticing BH after a long time ignoring it because more people are seeing that it hits a sweet spot.
But keep telling yourself there is no bias. That’s cool.
That’s what keeps emboldinging them to march on.
    And Dave,
Here is my question to you. How would you know what it is like to be conservative or libertarian or Christian or Catholic in Hollywood before you are established if you are not one?

  26. Nicol D says:

“It’s a shame that Nolte is more interested in making himself and his followers into victims and not actually talking about, you know, film and art and aesthetics and values.”
Clearly, you have never read the man.

  27. Joe Leydon says:

Er, Nicol: I kinda think that “quotation” was intended as a joke. You know, making a point through satirical exaggeration, that sort of thing. I know you Righties are humor deficient — which likely explains why Fox News’ attempt at a Daily Show-type program failed so badly — but this is, well, pretty freakin’ obvious.

  28. LYT says:

Nicol – Russell Brand got to bang Katy Perry BECAUSE he’s famous, and MacGruber got made because it’s a popular SNL skit and Jorma Taccone wanted to make a movie with a reasonable budget.
Whatever else your arguments are, those are distractions, and hardly related to politics. Seriously, I can’t imagine MacGruber being considered either left or right.

  29. christian says:

“I suspect more people like yourself are paying attention to BH because for better or worse they are getting traction with thier argument.”
    Welcome To Fantasy Island.

  30. Geoff says:

Nicol D, I can see that you falling into the myth commonly held by the (supposedly liberal) media about just massively popular these conservative-leaving programs are.
Yes, 30 Rock is a niche hit, but guess what? Even on its weakest nights, a rerun still gets about 2 million more viewers than the highest rated show on Fox News.

  31. Geoff says:

Oh and Nicol D – want to know the easiest and quickest way for a has-been or C-level celebrity to get back on TV for an exclusive interview and probably 20 minutes of airtime?
Just say something derogatory about the President.
Within 48 hours, you’ll be booked on Fox & Friends…..

  32. yancyskancy says:

Yeah, GET HIM TO THE GREEK has Brand reprising his breakout role in a hit movie, FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL. And 30 ROCK is, as Geoff said, a niche hit, and a prestige one as well, with something like 3 Emmys for Best Comedy Series. I’ve only seen it a handful of times, but it didn’t strike me as particularly political one way or the other. And I can’t imagine Fey’s politics are the only thing keeping NBC from canceling it.

  33. christian says:

Isn’t Alec Baldwin a Republican on 30 ROCK?

  34. jeffmcm says:

You’re an idiot, Nicol, blinded by ideology. Also, “emboldinging”. That’s a direct quote.

  35. Stella's Boy says:

Correct me if I’m wrong, but lately hasn’t Nicol been posting less and less, showing up every once in a great while to drop a post like the one above before disappearing again? I’m guessing he’s not going to respond to anyone here, nor even attempt to engage in a serious debate. Not his style. What kills me most about Nicol is not his politics. It’s that he is the embodiment of what he has continually mocked for years here: the narrow-minded partisan who (as jeff said) is completely blinded by ideology.

  36. Joe Leydon says:

Stella: Don’t blame Nicol for the infrequency of his posts. At the hospital, he can only sneak into the head doctor’s office every so often to use the computer.

It shows how out of it I was in trying to be in it, acknowledging that I was out of it to myself, and then thinking, “Okay, how do I stop being out of it? Well, I get some legitimate illogical narrative ideas” — some novel, you know?

So I decided on three writers that I might be able to option their material and get some producer, or myself as producer, and then get some writer to do a screenplay on it, and maybe make a movie.

And so the three projects were “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep,” “Naked Lunch” and a collection of Bukowski. Which, in 1975, forget it — I mean, that was nuts. Hollywood would not touch any of that, but I was looking for something commercial, and I thought that all of these things were coming.

There would be no Blade Runner if there was no Ray Bradbury. I couldn’t find Philip K. Dick. His agent didn’t even know where he was. And so I gave up.

I was walking down the street and I ran into Bradbury — he directed a play that I was going to do as an actor, so we know each other, but he yelled “hi” — and I’d forgot who he was.

So at my girlfriend Barbara Hershey’s urging — I was with her at that moment — she said, “Talk to him! That guy really wants to talk to you,” and I said “No, fuck him,” and keep walking.

But then I did, and then I realized who it was, and I thought, “Wait, he’s in that realm, maybe he knows Philip K. Dick.” I said, “You know a guy named—” “Yeah, sure — you want his phone number?”

My friend paid my rent for a year while I wrote, because it turned out we couldn’t get a writer. My friends kept on me about, well, if you can’t get a writer, then you write.”
~ Hampton Fancher

“That was the most disappointing thing to me in how this thing was played. Is that I’m on the phone with you now, after all that’s been said, and the fundamental distinction between what James is dealing with in these other cases is not actually brought to the fore. The fundamental difference is that James Franco didn’t seek to use his position to have sex with anyone. There’s not a case of that. He wasn’t using his position or status to try to solicit a sexual favor from anyone. If he had — if that were what the accusation involved — the show would not have gone on. We would have folded up shop and we would have not completed the show. Because then it would have been the same as Harvey Weinstein, or Les Moonves, or any of these cases that are fundamental to this new paradigm. Did you not notice that? Why did you not notice that? Is that not something notable to say, journalistically? Because nobody could find the voice to say it. I’m not just being rhetorical. Why is it that you and the other critics, none of you could find the voice to say, “You know, it’s not this, it’s that”? Because — let me go on and speak further to this. If you go back to the L.A. Times piece, that’s what it lacked. That’s what they were not able to deliver. The one example in the five that involved an issue of a sexual act was between James and a woman he was dating, who he was not working with. There was no professional dynamic in any capacity.
