Someday I hope they release better horror movies in October. Let Me In is apparently good and I look forward to seeing it, but the other titles (Case 39, Saw Part 87, Paranormal 2, My Soul to Take) sure represent an uninspired, dull group of so-called horror movies. Any given night of AMC’s Fear Fest has offered a vastly superior selection, so at least there’s plenty of home viewing opportunities, but I wish I was going to the theaters to see something this weekend.
I saw Saw 3D, aka Saw VII: The Final Chapter.
It was the same movie as Saw VI. One guy has to go through a series of rooms, given tasks he must complete or someone he knows will die in one of those contraptions. Most of the time he barely fails. Meanwhile Hoffman’s running around staying just ahead of the cops.
Then in the last few minutes they do this wrap-up where yeah, it feels like the end, but it felt more like another episode where they threw a better conclusion on there to make it the real end.
And the 3D didn’t hurt or enhance. Most of the time I forgot it was in 3D until a limb or a weapon came flying at the screen.
I appreciated Cary Elwes’s cameo to make it full circle, but it also made me realize how much weight he’s put on recently.
I posted this elsewhere: OK, I know this is going to sound ridiculously superstitious, but: Even though I am tempted to watch “Revenge of Frankenstein” on TCM tonight, because I haven’t seen it since I was very young, I’m also a little afraid to even want to watch it. The last time I was set to view “Revenge of Frankenstein” on TV was way back in 1963, when it was supposed to air as a Friday afternoon movie — right after school! — on CBS affiliate Channel 4 in New Orleans. Only it didn’t air. In fact, the only thing that aired on Channel 4 and every other channel that day was ongoing news coverage of a national tragedy. You see, that particular day was Nov. 22, 1963.
Let Me In was great.
Other than that, the past month has sucked.
Thankfully I discovered House (1977, Japanese) and The Innocents (1961) for the first time this past week, at home if not in a theater.
Krillian, I so totally agree! This, III and VI are so similar with a trapped person waiting at the end while one person goes through each trap (Did anyone ever stop to consider what would happen if the person in the maze died before the end? Hmmm…)
Cary Elwes was OK but his character… The 3D was really distracting AND it sure looked dark. Ah well, still love the series!
You see, that particular day was Nov. 22, 1963.
later that same night, also not broadcast NBCs Jack Parr Show with guests poet-pugilist Cassius Clay and Liberarce

Aw, c’mon Joe, we all know you spent most of the day in the laundry tryin’ to get grassy knoll stains out of your pants…
RILEYS POWER.
Hallick: On the advice of my lawyer, I am declining to answer that wisecrack. I have witnesses who will corroborate that I was in the 7th grade classroom at St. Vincent de Paul School at the time of the shooting. Unfortunately, all of those witnesses are deceased, but still.
Berg: Mary McCarthy, author of “The Group,” also was set to appear with Jack Paar that evening. And Lillian Gish — no kidding! — was going to guest star on “The Alfred Hitchcock Hour.”
