Guess some saw this coming, but I sure didn’t:

“Burlesque” opening better than “Faster”? Yeah, I know, I know– it’s FAMILY TIME! and no one wants a violent revenge movie on Thanksgiving Day… But they want “Burlesque”?

Which also is doing better than “Love and Other Drugs.” Is it possible that despite their INCREDIBLE AWESOMENESS, nobody outside of the showbiz sphere and celebrity-hounds really care about Gyllenhaal and Hathaway as actual “movie stars”? For all the hype about the nudity, and Hathaway’s PR ONSLAUGHT hitting every show and SNL… I think Heigl or Aniston could have tripled the early numbers. Yikes.

Love and Other drugs dp/30 = Goodfellas

Ed Zwick = Robert De Nero
    Marshall Herskovitz = Joe Pesci

    very scary guys.

Tangled – a princess movie that doesn’t look like it’s trying as hard as the one with the frog

Burlesque – a gay old musical time only comes maybe once a year.

Love & Other Drugs – oh look, another love story where one of them is probably emotionally unstable… neat…

Faster – Isn’t that the guy from The Gameplan and The Tooth Fairy and a bunch of other kid movies?

Never been a huge fan of godfather but damn it looks magnificent in HD. Thank you AMC. What always bothered me, despite the fine performances and subtle thematic development, was the slowness and obscurity of the story. I can’t keep track of all these italians. In HD the awesome visual density of the movie takes pre-eminence and slow pacing reveals a masterful sensibility. One of the most perfectly art-directed, filmed, and edited movie I’ve ever seen. The exquisite palate of browns, reds, golds, whites, blacks, swimming in beautiful gradations of light and texture. Did they clean up the soundtrack too for the HD release? The visual cues seems crisper, denser. And did Kubrick take those beautiful long dissolves from Coppola? I can’t remember if he used any prior to Barry Lyndon.

  10. LexG says:

LOVE AND OTHER DRUGS POWER OH MY GOD.

Poland, give me a whole thread so I can rant about this, that way you can just delete the whole goddamn thread (eh, maybe not, since NO ONE cares about the movie):

HATHAWAY POWER. I knew what I was in for, but I still couldn’t even BELIEVE the levels of naked scorching sexiness and HOTNESS and FETCHING CHARMING GLORY I was beholding. OH MY GOD.

First off, also, LOVED the movie. Kind of annoys me to see it getting an “eh whatever” reaction. Really? Of all the shitty romcoms and half-assed chick-flicks that get a pass, we get one by a good director with two great actors and good character support, and everyone shrugs it off. HATHAWAY ALL SHALL BOW.

And even though he’s TOTALLY not my type of actor, credit where due, Hank Azaria kinda kills in this. But that fat guy really IS in a different, sitcomish movie all his own and takes you out of the drama and the romance and the vibe every time he shows up. And I can’t BELIEVE he gets to fuck THAT girl at the end of the movie. Puts an ugly pall over the whole proceedings.

But HATHAWAY in all her glory, ALMOST NONSTOP, just LOOK AT HER. I’m not really Captain Tits, but what I’m all about with THE HATH is her coltish LANKINESS, especially that part where she gets out of bed and you see her SEXY BACK with those giant LONG LEGS LOOK AT HER.

If it weren’t for PORTMAN POWER, it should be HATHAWAY POWER for BEST ACTRESS. Heartbreaking performance playing the AWESOMEST CHICK EVER. BOW TO HER.

    ZWICK POWER.

Also Gyllenhaal’s hair looked pretty cool, and I was pleasantly surprised Zwick did throw in a lot of mid-90s staples on the soundtrack.

  11. Joe Leydon says:

LexG: I cannot believe you said nothing about Hathaway’s feet. (BTW: I seriously, totally agree: It is a great movie.)

  12. LexG says:

I didn’t? Sorry for the oversight (tweeted about the feet so guess I forgot to here).

YES. She shows her feet in almost EVERY SCENE, though in that first part where she’s doing her stretches they were too dirty, but from there out it was AMAZING, and HOLY AROUSAL at that part where she has on those black nylon leggings and gives JAKE GOD GYLLENHAAL a BJ. LOOK AT HER.

You know, Zwick almost lost me, briefly, when he has Hathaway go to that OPEN MIKE NIGHT for Parkinson’s Sufferers and ANNE is all overcome and fake-laughing like in MAN ON THE MOON, but he brings it right back on track with that harrowing, depressing scene with that AWESOME bald guy from THE SAVAGES (and I really should learn that guy’s name, he’s GREAT) who’s stuck by his wife for all those years. That was one of the best scenes of the year.

And, really, if you’d ever told me I’d be giving props to Hank Azaria and Oliver Platt, two hambones I historically get annoyed by, I wouldn’t have believed it.

Also Gyllenhaal is really good. Why don’t people like this guy more?

  13. leahnz says:

well i for one care about ‘love and other drugs’ in so far as i’m keen as mustard to see it (but inexplicably will have to wait until the new year)

and also, i like jake g very much. i heard his bod steals the show from a friend who’s just seen it there, but she’s a jake g nutjob stalker looney freakazoid so i have to take her gushing with a grain of salt lest i be bamboozled by her extreme case of jake-blindness and go in expecting too much of jake’s bare ass

  14. LexG says:

Obviously I was distracted by other things, but I wanna say he has much, MUCH less nudity than Anne– only one or two quick bits here and there.

I think you will like the movie, though.

  15. Joe Leydon says:

In my next life, I will have a stomach as flat as Jake Gyllenhaal. Also, I will be able to play the saxophone.

  16. LexG says:

If I could just have his HAIR, I’d be happy.

Seriously, JAKE G.’s hair is so incredible. That’s like FRANK VINCENT HAIR. Like ARMENIAN HAIR. Each individual strand is like BLACK YARN, like you couldn’t even get a comb through it it’s so thick. (I think he was wearing a wig or extensions in PRINCE OF PERSIA, cuz NO WAY someone with Jake’s wavy THROW RUG of a coif could grow it out and somehow it’d become super-straight TOM CRUISE LEGEND HAIR.

No offense to his sister, but shouldn’t she be a lot hotter, considering Jake is like the best looking dude in the history of the universe?

    LOOK AT HIM.

  17. LexG says:

Seriously, I didn’t think a 2010 movie COULD make me more aroused than THE RUNAWAYS, then WELCOME TO THE RILEYS came along. Then BLACK SWAN.

Now LOVE AND OTHER DRUGS. I am so horny after seeing that.

    HATHAWAY POWER.

  18. Triple Option says:

Not sure if I’ll make it out to a movie this w/e with the influx of shoppers. Who needs the hassle? Plus some pretty good football on the docket. From just the 4th qtr of the Auburn-Bama game, I’m not sorry I stayed in. And did anyone catch the end of the Nevada-Boise St game?? Holy crap! If I could get just 1/10th the excitement and tension in the movies I go to I’d quit crying about the ticket costs and pre-show ads and where the jackasses around me keep their feet.

  19. LexG says:

Hey TO, take that shit to The Football Blog.

JK… But why do I always have to hear about BOISE STATE? What kinda Podunk shit is that? BOISE STATE. Always impressing everyone with these CRAZY GAMES and rallies.

It goes against every fiber of my being to root for COLLEGE KIDS to be winners at ANYTHING. Wake me up when those guys get into the NFL. College sports are one step too close to WATCHING HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL GAMES AS AN ADULT.

    Fuck college athletes.

    Oh yeah, and… HATHAWAY POWER.

  20. Triple Option says:

Well Lex, because Boise St lost, I’m guessing you won’t have to hear too much about them for a while. Unless their kicker commits suicide or some whacko Northern Idaho separatist puts a hit out on him. That’s kind of the beauty of college ball is that the kids can go out there and make big plays…or, miss seemingly simpler ones, like the kicker from BSU did. Wide right on a 26 yd kick w/2 seconds left on the clock. Ball was even at the center of the field. Unless the kid thought his foot was a cue stick, it’s really not that easy to do, especially from a right footed soccer style kicker. If that wasn’t bad enough, he gets a shot in OT to put his team on top and then misses a mere 29 yarder, wide left! I kinda blame the special teams coach for not telling the kid, “Look, whatever you do, do NOT try to over compensate.” No brainer but between he and head coach I’m guessing it didn’t happen. Your schadenfreude gland should be turning cartwheels over this kid’s misfortune. I’m sure w/just those two kicks he costs his school a good $2.5-$4M payday in the next 6 weeks, just for starters. Not to mention the potential boost potentially playing for a national title could’ve brought to the program in terms of visibility, recruiting and future TV revenue. If they want to send any kind of message to team or rest of the country they should make the kid find his own way back to campus.

By the by, It’s because they’re located in such a podunk place that makes them a bit of a phenom. Although it’s not like they’re recruiting from Boise and Moscow and were able to build up to a nationally ranked power. Feel sorry for TCU, though. They may have the best defense in the country but they’ll get screwed so no one will see them.

So, why don’t you think Hathaway isn’t a bigger star? Or is she and this just isn’t a film that people were going to go out and see? If you were repping her, what kind of project would you have her do next?

Also, I don’t know if this has ever come up w/you but considering your usual stance, I’m surprised you’ve not taken any sort of negative position over The Hath for so easily rolling over on her criminal bf. No word about not being able to trust her? Do you think when they were out at dinner or whatever and she’s cutting him loose did she wink or try to signal to him that they’re being watched? If you were dating her and she booked a two week trip out of the country and it wasn’t for movie, would you be nervous that the noose was going to tighten?

One last head scratcher…how could you be so vehement against high school and college ball? Aren’t the cheerleaders at that age right in your wheelhouse of appreciation? How much time do you spend blogging over at ESPNU?

  21. anghus says:

yesterday was one of the best college football days i can remember. the auburn/alabama game was amazing. boise st/nevada was epic. oregon/arizona was interesting for a half.

its hard to argue auburn and oregon for the national championship. auburn has had so many close calls. but they always find a way to win.

  22. Peter says:

LexG, you should have your own Oscar award nominations for Best Actress. Perhaps the Best Picture, too.

It would probably be more entertaining than the actual Oscar.

I am seeing Love And Other Drugs tonight, can’t wait.

  23. LYT says:

Lex does have his own awards — the MTV movie awards.

Seriously. Twilight and Michael Bay tend to always win those.

  24. sanj says:

when is American Idol going to get cancelled ? aren’t teens
bored of it already ? seems like Fox is going a great job
at getting big money for all those ads ..ads teens probably
    forget about.

theres a dozen teen movies that can turn into tv shows ..fox
needs to do this now before idol crashes and takes everything with it .

Glee is going to get old after 2 more years. the cast will
be too old for high school ..and yet it didn’t stop 90210

somebody will write a book about the fall of Fox …

  25. IOv3 says:

We are getting X-Factor in a year. I would imagine if X factor takes off, AI could be threatened, but FOX probably likes the idea of AI ratings in the FALL.

  26. Foamy Squirrel says:

What I want to know on AI – shouldn’t they be starting to scrape the bottom of the talent barrel by now? I’m still rather stunned that there are “the next big 20-something singers” who apparently haven’t auditioned already despite their (apparently) obvious talent. Do they suddenly become amazing overnight? Do they studiously avoid auditioning until they feel they’re ready? And what about all the auditions where the judges say “You need some time to mature – come back in a year or two”? How come we don’t see more returnees?

  27. LexG says:

Foamy, it seems like HALF the auditioning kids ARE returnees the last few years; Kids who’ve made it all the way to Hollywood in the auditioning process come back the next season and make it to the top 12. And they prominently feature regular hacks who’ve been on the show four, five, six seasons.

There’s a whole generation of kids who’ve made a LIFE CHOICE where their ENTIRE raison d’etre is to audition for A.I., or So You Think You Can Dance, or Top Model literally every year; In the meantime they don’t seem to make ANY effort to, you know, PERFORM AT BARS AND CLUBS or cut a record on their own or even take to YouTube. Just once a year they audition for A.I., which they’ve pinned their aspirations on 10000%, nothing else acceptable to them.

And a fair percentage of the contestants are 16, 17 years old every year, which explains who they keep getting NEW UNDISCOVERED voices. I think 16 is the first year of elligibility.

  28. Foamy Squirrel says:

Hrm… I’d only see 1 or 2 returnees per year – I remember one girl who got to Hollywood like 3 times. Still, you’d think you’d see more of them and how many of the “top 20” (or whatever the number is these days) are returnees?

If the average contestant age starts to skew younger, that’s understandable… but I’m still boggled that some of the others have apparently been completely under the radar for how many years with all these “talent” shows going on.

  29. Peter says:

Saw Love And Other Drugs. For 30 minutes or so, I thought I was seeing About Last Night again, which is a good thing. Then I thought I was seeing a pharmaceutical version of Up In The Air which was ok, then we have Josh Gad almost ruining it. The two leads are wonderful, great chemistry together, and it’s nice to see a healthy, loving and sexual relationship on screen. If Zwick could cut out a couple of story lines and characters, he would have something really special. Still very enjoyable, a solid double or even triple.

  30. sanj says:

the first 4 seasons were real popular

5 out 100 people in those seasons actually got somewhere successful …

From Justin to Kelly the movie – this got some bad movie
    reviews …

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o6kbtsfZjhk

Kelly Clarkson made some nice music videos and now
    where is she ?

  31. cadavra says:

Just saw Justin Guarini on Broadway in the new musical version of WOMEN ON THE VERGE OF A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN, and I must say he did quite a credible job–though admittedly playing the timorous son of Patti Lupone isn’t much of a stretch for him.

  32. IOv3 says:

Clarkson got heavy and argued with Clive Davis. That’s pretty much slowed her career down until she gets thin again. She already apologized to Clive Davis.

  33. LexG says:

Huh? Wasn’t ALREADY GONE (from just last year) her biggest hit ever? (Or at least as big as SINCE U BEEN GONE.)

(EDIT: Er, per Wikipedia, guess not.)

Oh well: “Hello hello! This is KELLY CLAAAAAARKSON.”

  34. christian says:

It’s hilarious that folks respond to Sanj the Spambot.

  35. sanj says:

christian do you really think i’m a spambot ?

  36. Foamy Squirrel says:

In honor of Leslie Nielsen – surely you can’t be serious?

  37. IOv3 says:

Sanj may be a bot but I respect it enough to treat her as a real person.

  38. sanj says:

    if i’m a bot – who controls me ? the us government ? google ? also i’m a guy.

  39. leahnz says:

    stop calling me shirley

  40. sanj says:

James Franco and Anne Hathaway are the hosts for Oscars

guess it means they aren’t winning any awards ?

DP – you should leave the Franco DP/30 on the main MCN page
    + add the mp3 audio

  41. sanj says:

Hey DP – why not add more critics to that gold chart ?
    isn’t having 50 + critics better ?

  42. Foamy Squirrel says:

Okay, I’m going to go for the low hanging fruit…

…because DP doesn’t have that many friends!
