And David will be telling us that the Social Network win at the Critics Choice Awards means nothing in terms of Oscar potential in 4… 3… 2…
The critics love the Social Network because much like Sideways, it seems relevant to their lives. Unfortunately it’s not, it’s all about THE KING’S SPEECH BABY, and that’s how it’s going to go Joe.
Green Hornet is a one-time deal. We’re talking the Billy Zane Phantom, or the Alec Baldwin Shadow.
I have no problem with ‘one-time deals’. One of the (many) reasons I rather enjoyed The Sorcerer’s Apprentice is that it felt like a complete movie with a complete character arc and not a glorified pilot for a franchise. A token loose end or two sure, but really the story is over when the credits roll.
Looks like Kevin James’ track record of starring in nothing but $100-million-plus grossing comedies may have come to a halt.
“The Dilemma” is just plain weird and doesn’t work at all. Ron Howard simply isn’t a good enough director to finesse the movie’s weird tonal shifts (Alexander Payne might have been able to pull it off). And the demonization of the Ryder character was far more offensive than the gay car jokes everybody made such a big fuss about last fall when the trailer began to circulate.
I’m actually kind of surprised it got a “B” Cinemascore rating. The Friday matinee audience I saw “The Dilemma” with seemed to genuinely loathe it.
Berg – re: Hornet. I think the last time it was looked at it as anything more than a dice roll is when Jason Scott Lee was rumored. Otherwise, it’s been a perpetual “which quarter do we write this off” prod. I give them credit for not going the generic route. It would have been easy to hand this over to PWS Anderson or Wiseman.
Berg, I’m not so sure about that. Granted, even if it does well, it may well wind up as one of those movies where they talk about doing a sequel but never actually pull the trigger… but I have to say, the crowd I saw it with on Friday (admittedly on the geekier side, based on the pre-movie chatter, anyway) seemed to really like it and get on its silly-cool wavelength. The weird Gondry flourishes that I loved and thought, beforehand when I was wondering how much of that there would be, might alienate the popcorn crowd all seemed to go over.
I hesitate to extrapolate too much from anecdotal crowd reactions, because I’ve seen plenty of those that conflict with my own crowd experiences and/or the actual fate of the movie… but I was sensing a crowd-pleaser. I could just be projecting, because I really enjoyed it a lot; it’s not a top-tier Rogen/Goldberg script like Superbad nor a top-tier Gondry effort like Eternal Sunshine (but what is?), but it’s well within the ranges of both Pineapple Express and Science of Sleep, which is pretty awesome for a third-tier superhero movie. We’ll be lucky if any of the new Marvel/DC crop coming this summer is nearly so much fun, even if Hornet has a little bit of messiness.
Jesse, thank god those movies this Summer are nothing like this polished piece of shit. I love Gondry, I love what Seth and Evan do, but this film is garbage. It’s such garbage that it’s obviously been dumped because there’s no other reason, after seeing it, that I can come up with for keeping it in the can as long as they did.
Regarding the release date, for what it’s worth:

I guess I missed something — what’s The Green Hornet Dilemma?
yancy – It’s a movie where Cameron Diaz has to decide whether or not to tell her best friend that the Green Hornet and Kato are sleeping together.
Good one, LYT! Duh — forgot about The Dilemma opening this weekend, too. Oh that Dave and his wacky headline mash-ups.
In other bad news, Susannah York has passed away at 72. Christ, this year is starting out lousy.
Goodbye to Ms. York:

There was a time when Saturday night was a hot night for posting on this blog. Guess that was a long time ago.
Am dying to hear what you thought of Green Hornet, Joe, since you an I are among the few/proud to admit liking The Phantom. For what it’s worth, I just watched The Last Exorcism and was quite impressed. It’s certainly one of the better fake-documentary horror films to come along from that somewhat derided sub-genre. And how it got away with a PG-13, I do not know.
i saw Battle Royale … crazy movie with killer teens –
problem i had was with back stories of most of the teens ..
the violence part was pretty awesome …

The makers of The Hunger Games would appreciate it if you would forget that Battle Royale exists.
