Has anyone else noticed that the NY Times never bothered publishing a review of “Atlas Shrugged, Part 1”?
Pretty odd behavior for the “newspaper of record,” especially since they make it their mission to review everything/anything: Bollywood films that never screen for the press (and whose reviews invariably appear in Saturday editions); micro-budgeted indies that open exclusively at Brooklyn gastropubs; etc.
    Very odd.

  2. JKill says:

Usually I would post this in the box office thread, but thought I’d add that I dug THE CONSPIRATOR, which I thought was a smart, entertaining period film with a strong lead performance from McAvoy and a great supporting ensamble. The look of the movie, which seemed kind of strange from the trailers, was actually pretty beautiful and effective. A really good political and historical drama from Mr. Redford that thoughtfully talks about the issues of today and the past without being didatic. I was thoroughly entertained.

  3. Krillian says:

Maureen Dowd did a column on Atlas Shrugged; maybe they figured that was close enough. I know certain groups of people are excited for it, but I was intrigued by William F. Buckley’s dismissal of it, calling Ayn Rand anti-altruistic.

  4. LexG says:

Since I can no longer tweet:

Lotta hot pussy in church today.

Also: LOVED Water for Elephants, and if the amount of well-earned, Notebook-level cougar-sobbing at the end was any indication, that thing is going to have ENORMOUS word of mouth. I cried like a little girl.

JKill: Glad you liked CONSPIRATOR POWER. I seem to be alone in loving its TOTAL OLD MAN pacing and GAUZE-O-VISION WAX PAPER soft focus.

And ask me, McAvoy (who’s worked past that THIS GUY AGAIN??? overexposure to turn into an incredible leading man) was faring pretty well there for 1865:

Evan Rachel Wood AND Alexis Bledel??? HIT THAT SHIT, MCAVOY!!!!

  5. berg says:

I am with lex and jake hamilton in the loved H20 for Elephants corner, and it’s Hal Holbrook who brings the emotional heaviosity to the film … but …. Conspirators should’ve been called the constipators …. we all know the accused were hung yet redford gives us a slo-mo shot of the hangman’s noose as it snaps her neck? not even dominic sena would’ve been so un-subtle

  6. movieman says:

JKill and Lex: Add me to the pro-“Conspirator” camp. Caught up with it at a weekday matinee this week (no pre-release screenings in Cleveland), and was very pleasantly surprised, especially considering the ehhh reviews it’s been collecting since Toronto. It’s the type of classical, old-style filmmaking only Eastwood seems to be doing these days, and I found every minute engrossing. McAvoy solidly anchors the movie (and his “American” accent, mercifully, doesn’t sound like Tom Cruise the way it did in “Wanted”), and the supporting cast is mostly unimpeachable.
(I didn’t even really mind Justin Long–or his mustache.) The crix who complained of a waxworks vibe to the proceedings obviously didn’t see Sun Classics’ howlingly terrible, comic book-ish “The Lincoln Conspiracy” which covered some of the same turf back in 1977.
It still seems bizarre to me that the NYT completely blew off “Atlas 1.”
Like I said, their third (hey there, Mike Hale!) and fourth (howdy, Rachel Saltz) stringers will seemingly review ANYTHING.
Watched “Cinema Verite” on HBO last nite, and it’s now official. The only 4-star worthy American movies I’ve seen so far this year were both made for HBO (“Verite” and Todd Haynes’ “Mildred Pierce”). Can’t wait for Curtis Hanson’s “Too Big To Fail” on HBO next month.

  7. IOv3 says:

You could tweet if you didn’t have PTSD from using IE like a noob while looking for porn. Just download freaking tweetdeck if you really want to see if you can tweet or not. Seriously, I hope this is a bit because it’s epic level weirdness to not use the internet the way the internet is intended to be used!

  8. Not that I want to become ‘official Tyler Perry defender’ of The Hot Blog, but is anyone else amused at the number of negative reviews for Madea’s Happy Family that basically take Perry to task for having a film with negative female characters in it? The Hollywood Reporter all-but accuses Perry of being a secret misogynist. Pretty much every other film gets whacked (fairly or not) for featuring noble women triumphing over evil men, yet he does the opposite here and every critic acts like they’ve never even seen a Tyler Perry film and are SHOCKED that Perry has a bunch of ammoral/immoral female characters in his newest picture.

Of course, that’s not too different from the first few reviews for For Colored Girls (positive and negative) that were SURE that Tyler Perry’s fans would be shocked by the story due to its content (rape, abortion, violence towards children, etc), completely oblivious to the fact that most Perry films are rife with this kind of subject matter. Point being, I suppose, it seems like the trades and newspapers go out of their way to assign each Tyler Perry film to a critic who has never actually seen a prior film of his before and seems to think that he makes Big Mamma’s House sequels. Fair or not, it seems like much of the discussion of his work stems from a place of willful ignorance about the kind of films he actually makes. When Spike Lee can start a national debate by criticizing Perry based primarily on the (admittedly accurate) commercials for Perry’s (admittedly mediocre) TV shows, well that’s something worth mentioning, especially when a nationally-known critic just got canned for making the kind of mistake that, as Lex pointed out, plenty of other critics make without anyone noticing…

  9. IOv3 says:

Scott, whenever a gay man takes on women in that way, you are going to get the whole misogynist wrap. If that’s not the case (and Perry has never really come across as a woman hating homosexual) which seems likely. He’s an African-American man writing, directing, and producing a film that takes shots at African-American women, and that’s just asking for problems.

  10. Joe Leydon says:

“Point being, I suppose, it seems like the trades and newspapers go out of their way to assign each Tyler Perry film to a critic who has never actually seen a prior film of his before and seems to think that he makes Big Mamma’s House sequels.”

Hate to burst your bubble, Scott, but Big Happy Family actually is the fourth Tyler Perry movie I’ve reviewed for Variety. The first was his first: Diary of a Mad Black Woman (which, BTW, he did not direct).

  11. anghus says:

i keep seeing these 15 second ads for Dylan Dog. It feels like i’m watching someone digging a hole and dumping money into it. Wait, that’s not true. You can get money back out of a hole. It feels like theyre burning stacks of money with a butane torch.

Lowest per screen average of the year?

  12. I apologize for the overly broad brush and, if this needs to be said, I wasn’t specifically talking about you. Two of the examples off the top of my head came from past Hollywood Reporter reviews, so I hastily (and wrongly) wrote ‘the trades’ when I should have written ‘some trades’.

    http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/review/colored-girls-film-review-32056

    http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/review/madeas-big-happy-family-film-181540

I stick by my original complaint about how some/many pundits and critics often discuss Perry’s work. But you’re right: Variety (and you) didn’t deserve my knocks. Again, apologies.

  13. LexG says:

I am pretty sure Tyler Perry is not openly gay, IO.

Anghus, is DYLAN DOG that thing with Brandon Routh? HAHAHAHAHA saw a spot for that a week ago and couldn’t EVEN BELIEVE they were bothering with promotion at all. Looks like one of those things like DEAD AWAKE where there’s a name or two in it and it squeaks out on 1000 theaters, and you can’t believe they didn’t just shoot for straight DTV.

  14. IOv3 says:

Lex, yeah he’s not open about it and that’s his deal, but he at least USES THE INTERNET LIKE AN ADULT!

Oh yeah, only this blog could have two guys hype a piece of shit like Scream 4, and then turn around and shit on Dylan Dog. I applaud you. I really… REALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLYYYYYYYYYYYYYY do.

  15. LexG says:

IO, I will probably see DYLAN DOG. I see and enjoy most things, and actively GO INTO THINGS WANTING TO LIKE THEM, which you alone here seem to know is the RIGHT THING TO DO.

But you can’t tell me it doesn’t seem like a low-rent kind of deal. Really, you’re more excited about DYLAN DOG, whatever that really is, than a fourth SCREAM from THE MASTER OF HORROR and starring a literal screen full of piping-hot tail? Sometimes I do not get you.

More pressingly: I STILL CANNOT TWEET FROM MY LAPTOP, and hundreds of others are afflicted with this, and Twitter is not fixing it. It. IS. BULLSHIT.

    I still haven’t seen that Fanning/Moretz/Steinfeld pic either… What is this…

  16. Don Murphy says:

Shall we talk about how Kingo Poland ran a Glen Kenny quote as a sidebar and he fucking cut out Jeff Well’s name? Unpersoned him like he was living fucking 1984.

It made you look that much more awful Kingo, if that were possible.

  17. Joe Leydon says:

Scott: Your gracious apology is graciously accepted. Actually, I was more amused than annoyed by your post because — and there’s no way I can write this without sounding like a self-aggrandizing wanker — I was one of the few critics I know of who actually predicted a warm audience response for Diary of a Mad Black Woman, simply because I had some knowledge of Tyler Perry’s touring stage plays. Of course, I was the only white boy in local media to attend the Houston press preview of that movie… actually, I think I may have been the only white boy there, period… but that’s a different story.

  18. anghus says:

Io, here’s another situation where i’m being snarky, but it’s not about the film itself. It’s about the ads, the marketing, the money they are dumping into a wide release which will not help.

and yes, Scream 4 was worth hyping.

Maybe Dylan Dog is excellent, i won’t know until i see it. But i do know that in wide release, Dylan Dog is going to get murdered. Which seems to be appropriate as he is an undead detective.

  19. IOv3 says:

Anghus, you are not doubt correct, but they can’t all be financial winners. Especially on the weekend that sees the release of the Fast Five and PROM! Seriously, we should not be underselling the PROM! Nevertheless, I got the snark, but I will always be a hater of slasher films. While also being a fan of horror films like Dylan Dog seems to be.

Lex, not a Craven fan. He’s made about three movies that I dig. I also made the mistake of taking Scream seriously once and vowed to never… EVERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR do that… ag’in!

You also need to get this stupid fucking impression out of your head that I go into a movie with expectations. Fuck that noise. Expectations are and always will be for suckers or folks with more brazen attitudes than myself. I hope what I choose to see is good. HOPE being the key fucking word in that equation.

Now, with your computer issues, seeing as you are a complete fucking noob somehow. Your difficulties with Twitter may have to do with your in ability to TURN ON NEW TWITTER! Seriously, use the new interface, and everything will work fine for you. Your computer will not blow up, your hdd will be fine, and your data will not be sold to random people from a -STAN country.

  20. Gus says:

I also noticed the absence of an Atlas Shrugged review from NYT and thought it was pretty nuts, given how far their reviewing takes them.

  21. Michael. says:

What do you guys think about PTA testing with Kubrick’s 2001 camera for his next? If it turns out to be true and Elswit doesn’t shoot the next film who would you like to see take over as DP?

  22. IOv3 says:

It’s anachronistic and I bow to your level of nerdiness, sir. Seriously, I am bowing and now clapping.

  23. Joe Leydon says:

PTA could say he’s going to shoot his next movie with a 1983 vintage Panasonic Newvicon Omnipro Color Video Camera he bought at a garage sale, and I’d say: OK, I’ll buy a ticket.

  24. LexG says:

    MORETZ POWER. CUTE!

IO: I can’t upgrade to new Twitter. NONE of my buttons are working. IT IS BULLSHIT.

  25. IOv3 says:

Lex, that seems to make the most sense. You somehow need to figure out to upgrade to new Twitter. Without remote desktoping into your pc, I would recommend downloading C CLEANER, running it, and getting rid of all of these temporary files. Hopefully, once they are gone, you will be able to log into twitter, and have it work for you.

ETA: Again you can’t fix your computer problems, if you refuse to download programs that help you fix it.

  26. berg says:

didn’t Vincent Gallo have some Kubrick lenses from Barry Lyndon that he sold on eBay a few years ago? … and Leydon, there were plenty of white people at the screening of Diary of a Mad Black Woman you refer to, one of them asked you during the movie “What do they mean by ‘po-po?'”

  27. Joe Leydon says:

Oh, yeah, I forgot. You don’t speak Jive, and I had to translate for you.

  28. nikki whisperer says:

LexG: Go into your cookies file, remove all twitter cookies, reboot, try to log in again. New/old version shouldn’t matter. I actually find the old version works better and is less buggy.

  29. sanj says:

where is the super8 review – don’t you movie critics have access to early movies …

i’m guess no DP/30 – let G4 handle all the geek movies interviews ..unless DP can get Steven Spielberg – who
should have had a few DP/30’s by now…dude is super
famous director .. my guess is he has no idea who DP is..
but DP did get Peter Jackson and James Cameron to do
    DP/30 ..

  30. IOv3 says:

Shilli, I would agree with you, but have you logged out of Twitter lately? That’s an entirely new homepage and that’s probably why Lex is having a hard time with twitter, because they want everyone to use NEW TWITTER. I brought up C Cleaner to get rid of the cookies but he should do what you suggest since he fears foreign WEBSITES!

  31. berg says:

DUDE IN THE 1970s coming out of a screening of The Bride Wore Black
“Wow, I want to see every Francios Truffaut film ever made”
DUDE IN 2011 coming out of a movie
“Wow, I want to find every iPhone app that modifies fart sounds”

  32. Krillian says:

Maybe Dave should change BYOB to LNNT (Lex Needs New Twitter) in a show of solidarity.

Where’s this notion that Tyler Perry takes shots at women? He’s one of the only regularly working writer-directors who churns out juicy parts for women. For Colored Girls had great acting. Granted, it wallowed in misery and suffering, but thems the breaks. Black women who’d be stuck playing the police sergeant who scowls at the two buddies at the beginning and the end of the episode get to play around with real human emotions on Perry’s watch.

I wonder how often Angela Bassett gets offered stiff roles, and she says to herself, “Well, at least I can have some fun on another Perry movie.”

  33. sanj says:

where’s the oscar hype ? last 4 months and nothing is worthy of an oscar ? do the actors suck ? do the directors suck ? film critics not pushing films like
they should …. the gurus of gold critics only pick anything in the last 4 months of the year ..
so lets blame all of them.

if source code – hanna – limitless (none i’ve seen) opened
in september 2011 …would critics automatically give these some sort of oscar buzz ?

  34. David Poland says:

I didn’t post or edit the Glenn Kenny quote, Schmucko.

Nice to see you carrying Wells’ water though. You’ve found your level.

  35. Don R. Lewis says:

The grindhouse horror movie I co-produced last year (THE VIOLENT KIND) hits on DVD and blu-ray May 10. Trailer and plot synopsis are here:

    http://www.dreadcentral.com/news/43890/watch-our-favorite-kind-trailer-violent-kind

  36. Joe Leydon says:

Kingo vs. Schmucko — coming soon to The SyFy Channel!

  37. storymark says:

No matter who wins – WE ALL LOOSE.

  38. Jeffrey Boam's Doctor says:

Why do so many people spell LOSE as LOOSE?
I see it time and time again. How does that happen?
The exact same people always spell BIZARRE as BIZZARE too.
US Education system, ruining taglines since 1982

  39. Joe Leydon says:

At what point did people start thinking famous and notorious (along with fame and notoriety) were synonyms?

  40. LexG says:

    Ironically, storymark is a schoolteacher.

  41. Joe Leydon says:

This will sound like something I’m making up, but: While grading treatments by scriptwriting students this week, I noted that one student had misspelled “shit.” Seriously: Spell it “shitt.” That’s when I put down the glass, and picked up the bottle.

  42. storymark says:

“Why do so many people spell LOSE as LOOSE?”

Because I’m a lousy speller, and even worse typist. That happens to be one of those words that I know how to spell, but almost always get wrong if I’m not really paying attention. “During” is another I mess up frequently.

  43. Rob says:

    @sanj

If HBO were the movies, Diane Lane would be a lock for a best actress nomination and Kate Winslet would be the favorite to win.

  44. berg says:

re: the spelling of sh*t …. in the french play Ubu Roi (1896) the lead character pronounces shit with an extra consonant, in fact the play provoked riots … is it possible the student was doing a take-off of Jarry?

“After only the first word (“merdre”, the French word for “shit”, with an extra “R”,[8] and meurtre: murder (fr.)) of the play, a riot, which has since become “a stock element of Jarry biographia”,[1] broke out. After further rioting during the first (and final) performance, Ubu Roi was outlawed from the stage, and Jarry moved it to a puppet theatre.”

  45. yancyskancy says:

The most head-scratching misspelling I encountered as a T.A. for screenwriting classes back in the day was the girl who consistently (as in EVERY time) used “women” when she meant “woman.” “Sue is an attractive women who…” When you can’t spell your own gender, maybe writing’s not your bag (in fairness, I don’t think she had any ambitions as a writer — the course was probably required for all film students).

My fave Internet misspelling is “then” for “than.” Phonetics in action!

  46. sanj says:

Bill Gates owns $3.2 billion stake in CN as railway’s largest shareholder

so the dude from Microsoft owns a real railway company..

hey DP – you should buy blockbuster and then put your DP/30’s dvds in there and people can rent them. you can
make money off late fees .

  47. Triple Option says:

I’m horrible at proofing myself. What I hate is when I run spell check and the thing grabs a different word than what you expect or intend. Like “Johnny is really dementia to get to the station before the bomb goes off.” Umm, are you saying Johnny is lost and confused? He doesn’t know where the bomb is?

Uh, no, that should be determined. I didn’t see MS Word had a sense of humor and wanted to make look like a 3rd grader.

Oh well, that changes the meaning quite a bit.

Yeah, and thank you for not reading for context, dip brain. Don’t act like it’s never happened to you.

  48. LexG says:

If I allow a spelling error at my job, I am under threat of immediate termination, possible jail time and a multimillion-dollar lawsuit.

So some of you guys have NO EXCUSE.

  49. storymark says:

No, YOU have no excuse. At my job, if I misspell a word at work, worst case scenario – the kids get to point it out, I admit a mistake (which kids always love) and we have a chuckle and move on.

  50. leahnz says:

who cares about the occasional typo/spello in the blog comments? sometimes they’re funny. it’s blog comments, not an english dissertation or the national spelling bee. sticks up the ass are painful and can be better used for doing macrame, making a whimsical wind-chime or entertaining a dog

(i take it nobody’s seen ‘fast five’ yet?)

  51. Krillian says:

I before E except after C and in words like ‘neighbor’ and ‘weigh’. And a couple other exceptions, so don’t even bother.

  52. Joshua says:

Wow, The Blue Bird, a big train wreck from 1976 with Jane Fonda, Elizabeth Taylor, and Ava Gardner is on Fox Movie Channel right now. A real curiosity item.

  53. sanj says:

    watched 100 feet – woman + house + ghost

lots of plot holes but some nice blowup scenes

  54. Don R. Lewis says:

Also- in relation to that self-whoring post about THE VIOLENT KIND coming out on DVD and bluray May 10….I shot and edited a fun behind the scenes featureette called “Lemonade and Dancing.”

  55. LexG says:

Who’s that main chick in Violent Kind, the brunette? Looks cool.

  56. berg says:

I nearly had an editor fire me because I had misspelled E M Forster’s last name … a week later I pointed out to a theater manager that the flyers they were passing out for Where Angels Fear to Tread had the name of the original author spelled incorrectly and they said “Don’t worry, it’s just going out to high school students.”

  57. Foamy Squirrel says:

Krillian – there are more exceptions to the “I before E…” rule than there are spellings that follow it, which is why it’s been dropped from the teaching curriculum in many countries.

  58. LexG says:

Seriously, my kingdom for the return of a Jeff McMahon to keep this place rockin’ into the night.

It’s like nowadays 10am PST is THE hot time to be on The Hot Blog. Seriously, without a blog of my own (because I don’t like the Blogger look or log-in), my entire evening three nights a week consists of refreshing four or five movie blogs looking for a place to pounce. This needs to pick up.

Or someone needs to tell me how to get MY OWN SITE, like Wells has, so it looks professional instead of some blogspot deal that’s too hard to log into.

  59. LexG says:

NO SHIT, the COLD BLOG gets about eight comments a day, versus like 3000 at SASHA STONE’S.

    Why is that?

  60. Joe Leydon says:

Well, that rehab stint didn’t last very long, did it?

  61. IOv3 says:

Yeah I have no idea why the blog shuts down at a certain time now. It literally makes no damn sense.

  62. Joe Leydon says:

Do you really need to have that question answered again?

  63. David Poland says:

I’m in Chicago. Comments are being unapproved as I have never done it before. Lex is banned for at least a week. And the baiters are just as boring as him on a rant.

  64. Paul MD (Stella's Boy) says:

To change the subject if no one minds, watched Game of Thrones and Treme back-to-back over the weekend. Never read the books or in the case of the latter saw the first season (one critic said you could start with season 2 and not be too lost). Much preferred Treme. Game of Thrones is well-made and looks great and maintained my interest, but also feels somewhat familiar. I also think the cast is pretty hit-and-miss overall, with some performances much stronger than others. Treme really grabbed me from the start. Seems much richer and more unique than GoT. Look forward to future episodes of both shows.

  65. David Poland says:

I am also Treme first. Didn’t see the season opener, but looking forward to this season’s gumbo. Sad if they dumped Steve Zahn, which some previews have indicated. Looking forward to watching David Morse.

  66. Joe Leydon says:

Paul: Seriously — it’s worth the effort to rent and/or downstream all the Season One episodes of Treme. It is a terrific show. And I’m not saying that just because I’m a 504 Boy.

  67. Paul MD (Stella's Boy) says:

Oh I trust you Joe. I love David Simon and I wanted to watch the first season but we moved right around the time it started and I just never managed to catch up as intended. The brief first season recap alone made me want to watch it.

Yeah David Morse is always great DP. He had a nice guest starring role on Lights Out and this role looks like a perfect fit for him.

  68. Joe Leydon says:

I have been a major David Morse fan since St. Elsewhere. And I greatly admire his performances in the Sean Penn movies — The Indian Runner and The Crossing Guard — that gave him two of his shamefully few lead roles. Just what the hell more does this guy have to do to get the recognition he deserves?

  69. Don Murphy says:

    Kingo
Schmucko? Seriously this from a grown man with a (supposedly) thriving business? You say you didn’t post and edit out Jeff Wells’ name from a quote on the main page by Glenn Kenny. I say you did. Let’s look at the track record…. Oh yeah, I believe me. You have the irrational hatred for Jeff and any other Blogger who gets readers, while your End Of Days nonsense begins a countdown to the end of nothing. Seriously, do you think people at the studios read your noise and jump and go “AHA, that man has it figured out. Follow him off yonder cliff?” It doesn’t happen.
“Schmucko” ? I was called better names in fourth grade.
Carrying Wells’ water? I don’t think so, more like putting your face in your piss and telling you to stop wetting the rug. But I would carry it. Wells is interesting, at the very least.

You call it BYOB because you are too fucking lazy to write anything anyone wants to comment on and you need the page hits, then you BAN Lex for writing what he wants to? You’re a ridiculous hypocrite, you know that?

    Signed
    “Schmucko”

  70. Joe Leydon says:

Don: At least he didn’t call you Dingleberry.

  71. Paul MD (Stella's Boy) says:

That’s a good question Joe. Morse is fantastic in The Indian Runner and The Crossing Guard. And he’s been so great in such a wide variety of movies like The Slaughter Rule, Dancer in the Dark, Contact, Down in the Valley, and many, many more.

  72. Don Murphy says:

    Joe
At least that would have been amusing on a third grade level. Doofus didn’t even refine his insult.

  73. Don R. Lewis says:

The actress in THE VIOLENT KIND is Taylor Cole…I tried to post a response last night but it never went through….

  74. Krillian says:

The one episode of Lights Out I watched had David Morse. Easy to forget how good he can be. Unfortunately I saw Hounddog and know how hammy he can be.

  75. yancyskancy says:

I don’t think anyone said they CARE about misspellings in blog posts. JBD asked rhetorically why ‘lose’ is so commonly misspelled, and others chimed in with examples or anecdotes of their own. I saw no sticks up butts.

Another fan of David Morse here, since his ST. ELSEWHERE days. He was good in 16 BLOCKS too.

  76. Foamy Squirrel says:

DP, re: Kenny/Wells quote – it’s your site. Whether you initiated or had a hand in the content or not, the buck ultimately stops on your desk unless it’s in the comments section (and given some of the recent Lex shenanigans, not even then).

Even if you have no idea which quote Don was referring to, turning around and saying “it’s not my fault” ain’t exactly the most professional response.

Joe – I thought my stepfather was the only person who used the word “Dingleberry”.

  77. Joe Leydon says:

As I recall, David called me a “dingleberry” in some post where was accusing me of being childish. At that moment, I felt like Charlie Sheen had accused me of drinking too much. Presumably, he did not call me “schmucko” because I am a goy.

  78. David Poland says:

    Hot Blog birthers. Love it.

Foamy, I didn’t say it didn’t happen in my house. That’s not what Don accused me of. But I allow my editors to do their job and if the accusation was of any significance whatsoever, I would have addressed it.

I still don’t know why Don is such a whiny child about me, but honestly, he’s not worth the time. Everyone in town puts up with his 6 yr old behaviors because he has some great ideas they can make money with. So instead of #winning, he’s #trashing. Yawn. He’s a coward and a liar and tends to stalking behaviors. But he’s had zero effect on my work or business, so….

  79. Joe Leydon says:

Best news I have heard all week.

    http://bit.ly/iadNY1

  80. sanj says:

so for like a few days the real news media like cnn bbc and the rest stop doing real news and just cover the royal wedding.

now would be a good time for like 10000 bloggers to break some news stories ..

the royal wedding is something disney should totally own…they could have made several movies by now just with Anne Hathaway or Amy Adams….they missed their oscar chances … therefore Anne misssed chance of being in a DP/30 …she hasn’t done any before.
but she can totally fake it by wearing 10,000 bucks worth of jewelry and trying to talk british. DP would
    totally buy into that.

DP – how much do you care about the royal wedding ?

“I don’t think anyone said they CARE about misspellings in blog posts. JBD asked rhetorically why ‘lose’ is so commonly misspelled, and others chimed in with examples or anecdotes of their own. I saw no sticks up butts.”

well actually yancy – since you appear to be talking to me re: my post but don’t address me for some reason – JBD finished his comment with a clear insult to storymark’s intelligence, “The exact same people always spell BIZARRE as BIZZARE too. US Education system, ruining taglines since 1982”. the “same” (presumably not very bright people) people such as story misspell other words as ignoramus products of the US education system (god forbid someone does a typo), and then your boy lex immediately chimes in with a PERSONAL insult to story, all because he made a freakin TYPO

STICKS UP ASSES (perhaps who has the sticks up their ass was unclear, i wasn’t referring to you)

oh, and blaming triple option for being as boring as lex for “baiting” him in this round of psychosis is preposterous. i read his post and it was CLEARLY good natured and well-intended, trying to deflect the blame off lex onto triple in this case is nonsense, but entirely typical

    Soooo……

Anyone else disappointed by Will Ferrell’s turn on The Office? Glad it’s only four episodes. I’d rather see Kelly get the job.

  85. sanj says:

the office is sucking cause there are too many characters that don’t have enough on screen time to tell their little stories …also remember when the office used to sell paper and have clients ? fixing this is easy ..just focus the stories on 4 characters per episode

the office is worth watching once and thats about it .. not watching repeats ..not worth buying off itunes …

some actors only get 2 minutes of screen time in some episodes but get paid big money.

what will happen next season …they will have more guest stars ..mostly big name movie actors. they might do something funny but the other stories will take a backseat and the problem continues.

they could also let go of 3 characters and nobody would
    really notice or care ..

  86. IOv3 says:

Kril, I hope they go with Jim Carrey. Something about his casting and that show just seems right to me.

  87. Martin S says:

After seeing about a dozen Thor commercial variants, none have the scope of the one for GL. Not surprised WB is dumping more into post, Campbell appears to have done a fine job of finding scope whereas if it exists in Thor, the trailer/commercials do a grand job of hiding it.

  88. sanj says:

Jim Carrey office – he’ll do good reaction shots like he
does.. but will he get good stories ?

Thor will make 100 million cause oscar winner Natalie Portman is in it …

Actually, now that you mention it, I guess I was a fan of David Morse before St. Elsewhere — because he was pretty damn good in Inside Moves.

It shows how out of it I was in trying to be in it, acknowledging that I was out of it to myself, and then thinking, “Okay, how do I stop being out of it? Well, I get some legitimate illogical narrative ideas” — some novel, you know?

So I decided on three writers that I might be able to option their material and get some producer, or myself as producer, and then get some writer to do a screenplay on it, and maybe make a movie.

And so the three projects were “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep,” “Naked Lunch” and a collection of Bukowski. Which, in 1975, forget it — I mean, that was nuts. Hollywood would not touch any of that, but I was looking for something commercial, and I thought that all of these things were coming.

There would be no Blade Runner if there was no Ray Bradbury. I couldn’t find Philip K. Dick. His agent didn’t even know where he was. And so I gave up.

I was walking down the street and I ran into Bradbury — he directed a play that I was going to do as an actor, so we know each other, but he yelled “hi” — and I’d forgot who he was.

So at my girlfriend Barbara Hershey’s urging — I was with her at that moment — she said, “Talk to him! That guy really wants to talk to you,” and I said “No, fuck him,” and keep walking.

But then I did, and then I realized who it was, and I thought, “Wait, he’s in that realm, maybe he knows Philip K. Dick.” I said, “You know a guy named—” “Yeah, sure — you want his phone number?”

My friend paid my rent for a year while I wrote, because it turned out we couldn’t get a writer. My friends kept on me about, well, if you can’t get a writer, then you write.”
~ Hampton Fancher

“That was the most disappointing thing to me in how this thing was played. Is that I’m on the phone with you now, after all that’s been said, and the fundamental distinction between what James is dealing with in these other cases is not actually brought to the fore. The fundamental difference is that James Franco didn’t seek to use his position to have sex with anyone. There’s not a case of that. He wasn’t using his position or status to try to solicit a sexual favor from anyone. If he had — if that were what the accusation involved — the show would not have gone on. We would have folded up shop and we would have not completed the show. Because then it would have been the same as Harvey Weinstein, or Les Moonves, or any of these cases that are fundamental to this new paradigm. Did you not notice that? Why did you not notice that? Is that not something notable to say, journalistically? Because nobody could find the voice to say it. I’m not just being rhetorical. Why is it that you and the other critics, none of you could find the voice to say, “You know, it’s not this, it’s that”? Because — let me go on and speak further to this. If you go back to the L.A. Times piece, that’s what it lacked. That’s what they were not able to deliver. The one example in the five that involved an issue of a sexual act was between James and a woman he was dating, who he was not working with. There was no professional dynamic in any capacity.
