Why You Should Be Afraid Of The End Of The Paramount Decree
Review: Frozen 2 (spoiler-free)
Review: Marriage Story (spoilers only in the broadest sense)
It shows how out of it I was in trying to be in it, acknowledging that I was out of it to myself, and then thinking, “Okay, how do I stop being out of it? Well, I get some legitimate illogical narrative ideas” — some novel, you know?
So I decided on three writers that I might be able to option their material and get some producer, or myself as producer, and then get some writer to do a screenplay on it, and maybe make a movie.
And so the three projects were “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep,” “Naked Lunch” and a collection of Bukowski. Which, in 1975, forget it — I mean, that was nuts. Hollywood would not touch any of that, but I was looking for something commercial, and I thought that all of these things were coming.
There would be no Blade Runner if there was no Ray Bradbury. I couldn’t find Philip K. Dick. His agent didn’t even know where he was. And so I gave up.
I was walking down the street and I ran into Bradbury — he directed a play that I was going to do as an actor, so we know each other, but he yelled “hi” — and I’d forgot who he was.
So at my girlfriend Barbara Hershey’s urging — I was with her at that moment — she said, “Talk to him! That guy really wants to talk to you,” and I said “No, fuck him,” and keep walking.
But then I did, and then I realized who it was, and I thought, “Wait, he’s in that realm, maybe he knows Philip K. Dick.” I said, “You know a guy named—” “Yeah, sure — you want his phone number?”
My friend paid my rent for a year while I wrote, because it turned out we couldn’t get a writer. My friends kept on me about, well, if you can’t get a writer, then you write.”
~ Hampton Fancher
“That was the most disappointing thing to me in how this thing was played. Is that I’m on the phone with you now, after all that’s been said, and the fundamental distinction between what James is dealing with in these other cases is not actually brought to the fore. The fundamental difference is that James Franco didn’t seek to use his position to have sex with anyone. There’s not a case of that. He wasn’t using his position or status to try to solicit a sexual favor from anyone. If he had — if that were what the accusation involved — the show would not have gone on. We would have folded up shop and we would have not completed the show. Because then it would have been the same as Harvey Weinstein, or Les Moonves, or any of these cases that are fundamental to this new paradigm. Did you not notice that? Why did you not notice that? Is that not something notable to say, journalistically? Because nobody could find the voice to say it. I’m not just being rhetorical. Why is it that you and the other critics, none of you could find the voice to say, “You know, it’s not this, it’s that”? Because — let me go on and speak further to this. If you go back to the L.A. Times piece, that’s what it lacked. That’s what they were not able to deliver. The one example in the five that involved an issue of a sexual act was between James and a woman he was dating, who he was not working with. There was no professional dynamic in any capacity.

So… does anyone here know the Madison?
Kingo Poland writes-
Foamy, I didn’t say it didn’t happen in my house. That’s not what Don accused me of. But I allow my editors to do their job and if the accusation was of any significance whatsoever, I would have addressed it.Don accused you of removing Wells’ name from a third party quote and replacing it with Blogger X. I am unsure what the difference is if YOU did it personally or your editors did it as part of a policy you have. Is it policy at your place to treat Wells as Voldemort?
I still don’t know why Don is such a whiny child about me, but honestly, he’s not worth the time. If this WERE true the paragraph would end right here, but Kingo continues Everyone in town puts up with his 6 yr old behaviors because he has some great ideas they can make money with. This is 100% true because David knows the town so well. Just ask him. He has the best understanding of what every person and studio needs to be doing. So instead of #winning, he’s #trashing. Yawn. He’s a coward will meet you Kingo anywhere, anytime with Foamy and Leydon as Referees. Then we’ll see who the coward is and a liar I have asked you in the past to list ONE lie, but you never do. One should be easy if I am such a liar. You gonna tell me Voynar DOESN’T owe Marie Callendars $5321 in past due pie bills? and tends to stalking behaviors. open your door when you say that But he’s had zero effect on my work aka unread articles about the future of the business or business, so…. or HAS he?
Do I get to wear a striped shirt?
And a pocket watch. Make sure it has a second hand that’s all you will need.
Again, I have no policy about any writer. Things I disagree with are posted daily.
Aside from that one substantive issue, this is all playground taunting.
on whose part?
I simply want to know why HE WHO MUST NOT BE NAMED was not named.
Wouldn’t have been a big deal to answer that question if you had simply asked.
And as far as I know, I have never used that phrase.
Jesus Christ Readers- I have asked that question. WHAT is the answer? Viaduct? I don’t know.
hey DP – any thoughts on the music video for
Beastie Boys ‘Fight For Your Right Revisited’
lots of actors in the 20 minute video …
the actors did a good job but i just didn’t like
the concept of the video
in the state of the union dp/30 .. there was mention how
quickly dvd’s come out like 4 months – but look at all
your sundance interviews / movies – most of those
aren’t on dvd yet ..its a major festival and lots of
big actors .. so is it a good thing to wait 8 months or longer ? when most of these movies don’t have huge budgets …
also waiting for 100 new people to show up for
a DP/30
Oookies. All I was saying was that a response along the lines of “I believe it would have been left out by one of the editors, I’ll look into it” would have been perfectly fine, as opposed to “I didn’t post or edit the Glenn Kenny quote, Schmucko.”
As I understand it, Don takes issue with the long industry pieces which contain stuff along the lines of “people shouting down a truth teller is more than a little pathetic” (from the Christine Vachon post)… which then get little or no response. I think it comes across as a little “…and if you don’t agree with me, you’re an idiot”, which positions DP as The Only Sane Man In Town (With An Ever Shrinking Audience).
I don’t know if that last part is true, given that the same thing happens over at Finke’s for the stuff that’s a little too esoteric, but I can understand how an “I’m right; you’re wrong” stance can be a little offputting if accompanied by a longwinded diatribe.
Incidentally, any other Hotbloggers in London for The Wedding ™?
FS, oh I wish, but you mean the HOT BLOG OFFICIAL STANCE OF STATING A SUBJECTIVE OPINION AS FACT! Poland hates what Netflix is doing for reasons that are his opinion but he sells them as fact. He does it all the time, and god is it fucking annoying.
Looks like it’s going to rain on Friday, so we’re dithering whether to set up in Hyde Park for the day or just line the street somewhere and run off to shelter as soon as the wedding party goes past.
Raining on a wedding day is seen as a good omen to some folks, so that’s something. Now, again, I admit to this being over the top but you sir, are in ENGLAND! If there is one thing the Brits do well, it’s ENDURING! So, sir, set up at Hyde Park all day and ENDURE IT 😀 !
The one day of the week it’s not warm and sunny, kind of funny.
Foamy why don’t you go to Green Park? It’s closer to the palace
Foamy – I haven’t been doing this successfully for 15 years by worrying much about backseat drivers.
Everyone has an opinion…. that’s why I allow and enjoy comments. They often make me think. A lot. They are also very stupid or myopic sometimes. Such is the nature of the beast. And if you feel the same of me, fine. I can’t linger on how you feel about me. I am interested in ideas. If you read something I write and you come away thinking about me, you’re not getting the point. If you can’t see the facts for the personality, maybe I am not writing well… but I can be sure, you aren’t reading well. That doesn’t make my conclusions right or wrong. But with few exceptions, I am not frivolous.
And so, once again, my analysis of the least interesting part of my work here… Me.
IO… you hate facts. Stop pretending you have any interest in anything deeper than your fan worship of “enter subject here.”
Nothing wrong with being a fan blinded by love. But the nasty claims that everyone who disagrees with you is evil got old years ago.
Meh, your blog your rules. I just thought you’d like a little perspective of where Don’s coming from. It’s not as if being an opinionated bastard is a mortal sin in the entertainment industry. 😉
Re: London Parks, my understanding is that Hyde Park will have all the various stands and big screens so you can see the wedding itself. Dunno about Green Park, I’ll have to look into it.
Ah yeah makes sense. I was just thinking in terms of location but Hyde Park is bound to have more room to breathe in anyway. Enjoy the show Foamy 🙂
David, I really hate to break it you, but your interpretation to me is bullshit. Mine of you, unfortunately you, is right on point.
Lex pointed this out about your Sucker Punch review and the way you do things is based around you putting forward a subjective opinion as FACT. Please do not insult my or anyone’s intelligence by stating otherwise because there are way too many posts from you to prove my point.
There are also countless fucking posts of mine that prove I could care less if anyone agrees with me. Seriously David, I could care less (Oh yeah, the hell with anyone who gives anyone shit for being a fan. You have some fucking nerve Dreamgirls. You real fucking nerve), and the fact that you think I think that way is another fine example of the David Poland REACHING FOR STRAWS TACTICS of ATTACKING PEOPLE.
You are attacking me and guess what? YOU DO A SHITTY JOB OF IT. Don Murphy may be 3 year old in your eyes but you are worse because you fain being a full-grown adult, when you post replies like the ones above like an teenager throwing a fit from having their WoW account turned off.
Yoo-hoo! Birthers! Eat shit and die!
http://www.whitehouse.gov/sites/default/files/rss_viewer/birth-certificate-long-form.pdf
His mother was 18 and dad 25? I suspect that might have had something to do with Obama’s reluctance to release it – I don’t think I’d heard that before.
IO – if they were in the middle of a 25H raid that teenager is perfectly entitled to throw a fit and sue their parents.
And still, by making it about me, Kingo’s Moriarty, we still have no answer to the question.
Is Wells’ name as a matter of policy to be redacted on your site by your editors and IF NOT then why was it?
Thanks, IO. As insightful as ever.
Don, you opted out of having me take you or your question seriously after all the blather. You like the guy who claims his wife still hasn’t answered “the question” (which is inevitably as inconsequential as this line of inquiry) after he’s punched her in the face a few times because “she had it coming.” You’re like Trump, claiming to have done a service to the nation because Obama released the birth certificate. “Why are you making this about me and ignorning the tiny piece of corn in the shit I was throwing in your face? You know, that corn’s nutritious! And all I care about is nutrition!”
That said, I already answered the issue of any site policy.
I love how Kingo argues with everyone who points out the truth.
“It’s all of you guys who are wrong, I am the only sane one here.”
Classic Mental Illness.
Keep dancing, Don.
Anybody else here wish to explain it to me? Genuinely? What is the site policy? Can Jeff Wells be mentioned by the staff or must be be blotted out?
Look at the MCN Twitter feed, Don. And look at the 9:22 entry on this comment thread last night. If you need reading glasses to see what’s in front of you, I will send you some.
1416 North LaBrea, Los Angeles, CA 90028.
So that’s where I can send you my script, Don?
That’s it – to the thunderdome with the both of you.
Joe, only if its about a time travelling robot driving instructor and his best friend, a talking pie.
(Crumples up screenplay two-thirds finished when he sees Anghus had the same idea. Goes back to his corporate-lawyer-switches-bodies-with-circus-elephant script outline.)
David, more insight than just about anything you add on a daily basis. Seriously, your comparisons used in an attempt to insult Don demonstrate in spades why you are such a peculiar bird.
another spoof comedy movie…
Not Another Not Another Movie trailer
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p7DGgvVfV60
IO – how does Marvel operate?
What’s that? You don’t have a fucking clue, but will claim ancillaries make up for theatrical shortcomings?
What’s that? A case of you stating opinion as fact?!
What was that you said?

2) I appreciate Poland, always will, but the dude is frustrating. If I had no respect for him, I would not have edited the threads up there that I did even if I left them snarky like an asshole.
Really? Is that what the above load of shit shows? You jump into a spat that has nothing to fucking do with your dumbass and piss on Dave. That’s an appreciation?
Oh, I’m sorry. I should ask first what external event has occurred to make you hostile – this time.
Man, that’s too many words, and let’s break it down: I could give a shit about you Martin. Seriously, keep poking me with a stick. I could care less.
FEAR THE HUMANCENTIPAD and the Human Centipede: easily the stupidest recent horror movie hyped as genius.
after that southpark apple episode …lots more people will find out about the human centipide movie
also DP – when are you going to do a Steve Jobs DP/30.
probably never. he’s too busy making more ipads iphones…and all sorts idevices. Jobs is just too busy to
talk to anybody ..which is kinda weird cause they make
lots of communcation devices.
can you write some comments on apple products ? does it seem like they have a monopoly on digital media – movies / music … i mean ..if they charged 1 dollar
for movies that come out within 12 weeks in theatres
can apple beat netflix ? could that boost sales of the ipad which is like 500 bucks .
i’m one of the few people that doesn’t use apple products …yeah i’m lame.
but i’ve been to the apple store..which does look nice.
hi yo silver armie hammer
(re: ‘super 8’ via d-box, i wonder if it’s just a matter of time before most cinemas are fitted with d-box seats in the effort keep the cinema-going experience viable as a point of difference from the ever-sophisticating home theatre laze. if d-box is 3D compatible, that could be pretty trippy – poke, jerk, zoom, fall, crash! cinemas might need in-house medics for those delicate souls susceptible to 3D-box sickness)
how to get lady gaga eyes .. skip to the last 2 minutes.
just kinda neat.

So it seems Dylan Dog is tracking around $900.00
Unfortunately that’s not the per screen average but the weekend gross.
Im amazed at how many ads Ive seen for that flick. Comedy Central plays them during every break at night.
Everytime it’s a BYOB it devolves into a “Bring Your Own Bitchfestaboutthis Blog.” Actually, this one started that way. But still. Don’t you people have anything better to do with yourselves?
Yeah this place ain’t what it used to be.
Paul: Amen.
Which is really unfortunate. It’s not like people never argued. Hard to forget the days when Nicol was an everyday poster. But I don’t remember nastiness and petty bickering being a daily occurrence. Like Don said, it seems like every single BYOB devolves into heated arguments about stupid shit.
…that always revolving around the same people.
Yes very true storymark.
Well, maybe it’s up to us to make more non-contentious postings.
BTW: Look! I’m an “expert” — it says so right here!

Since you ask, Don. No – I don’t have anything better to do. 😉
That’s true Joe. I know I have allowed myself to get dragged down into the much and very much regret it. And I hope Cowboys & Aliens is half as awesome as the Syfy Channel masterpiece High Plains Invaders, which features giant CGI extraterrestrial insects attacking a town in the Old West.
“Yeah this place ain’t what it used to be.”
“Paul: Amen.”
“Hard to forget the days when Nicol was an everyday poster. But I don’t remember nastiness and petty bickering being a daily occurrence.”

Aw… Joe, did your mommy write an article for you?
Yes Tim that discussion got fairly heated.
Foamy: That would be difficult, unless the editor has contact with the spirit world.
Check to see if there’s a comment: “Help help! Let me out of this coffin!”
Tim: Oh, I can think of even nastiest threads than that one. But that’s the point: I bet all of us long-timers can point to individual threads where things got inexcusably out of hand. Now… well, such threads are practically everyday occurances.
Foamy: That reminds me of an awful joke I heard back in grade school. What did one casket say to the other casket? Is that you, coffin?
hey movie reviewers – does it ever bug you when non movie reviewers – just average people get more views on youtube videos than your professional reviews ?
Sanj: Not as long as I keep toting up the hits for this one. http://youtu.be/eZPnEEtvXTU
Love the cigar whip-out at the end.
quote from joe’s thing by favreau re: cowboys & aliens:
‘What we’ve done, essentially, is set up this very serious, very stark, very dangerous world with all the conventions that apply to a traditional Western. And into the middle of that world, we drop aliens — and then have people react the way people in that world would have reacted.’
that sounds intriguing in theory, but just from the sensibility on display in the trailers for C&A, it sounds like a bit of wishful thinking on fav’s part; the western world in the trailers doesn’t exactly look like ‘unforgiven’, more like a slick b-movie western, which makes the premise of juxtaposing a stark, realistic, deadly western with an alien invasion seem a bit more promising than what appears in the previews…plus while i’m a fan of most his directorial efforts to various degrees, nothing in the style of ‘made’ or ‘elf’ or ‘zathura’ or ‘iron man’ indicates to me that fav is especially suited to creating the world of a ‘serious, stark and deadly’ western — but i guess stranger things have happened, and i never trust trailers, marketing is the devil. i’m still keen to see it.
Actually, Leah, it was co-screenwriter Alex Kurtzman, not Favreau, who said that.
Still, what about “Made” made you think he could do “Elf”? And what about those made you think he could do “Iron Man”? Favreau’s a director I’ll put faith in.
January Jones Is Pregnant!
yeah but your not an oscar winner like Natalie Portman who is also going to be a mom.
maybe Jones can do Black Swan 2
joe: my bad, it says that very clearly in the piece. that’s what i get for speed reading on my tea break.
Or taking speed on your tea break. (I keed, I keed.)
i’m on a natural freaking high, joe (nah actually i’m knackered but TGIF)
BTW: Favreau did tell me that, right after Swingers, he and Vince Vaughan actually wrote a straight-up Western titled The Marshal of Revelation — but they couldn’t find anyone willing to finance a straight-up Western at the time. Go figure.
mike and trent in the old west…(i think those reticent, no-bull cowboys might have kicked motormouth trent’s ass, after he tried to pull some funny business at the poker table or some such, and mike would have made a good saloon proprietor)
but in all seriousness, vaughan’s career appears to have taken a tragic turn somewhere around 2007, i wonder what happened
Yeah, I though Vaughn was super in WEDDING CRASHERS and THE BREAK-UP, almost an actor-as-auteur situation. But I don’t get his choices lately.
your highness missed out on making big money off the royal wedding. they should have bought like 1000 tv ads for the movie trailer…as a historical comedy about old kings and stuff.
also Keira Knightley should have married prince William…the dvd sales would have sold well…even
the crappy movies people would have bought ..then then a week later she could divorce him and keep all the dvd money.
