VARIANCE FILMS TO RELEASE LiTTLEROCK, SPECIAL ORDERS NO. 9 AND THE WEIRD WORLD OF BLOWFLY

New York, April 28, 2011 – Variance Films has acquired U. S. theatrical rights for three highly-acclaimed independent films, founder Dylan Marchett announced today: the thought-provoking Slamdance and River Run award-winning experimental documentary GENERAL ORDERS NO. 9, the Gotham and Independent Spirit Award-winning drama LiTTLEROCK, and SXSW favorite music documentary THE WEIRD WORLD OF BLOWFLY.

The three films exemplify Variance Films’ uniquely diverse slate, which includes recent releases such as the kung-fu box office hit IP MAN 2: LEGEND OF THE GRANDMASTER, which opened in January 2011 and has grossed over $200,000 in limited theatrical release, and the animated documentary film AMERICAN: THE BILL HICKS STORY, which opened to sold-out screenings in early April and is currently expanding across the country; the film is also now available via On Demand.

“These films have almost nothing in common—except that they’re fantastic,” said Dylan Marchetti in a statement. “One is a film that communicates with poetic narration and stunning imagery, one is a meditation on the limits of communications and the ability of the young to transcend the language gap, and one features a 66-year-old who curses more than I could ever hope to, which says an awful lot. But all three films give you that thrilling rush of discovery while you’re sitting in the theater, and in the end, that’s exactly what we’re looking for.”

Awarded for its beautiful and surreal cinematography, GENERAL ORDERS No. 9 is a mysterious documentary that contemplates the signs of loss and change in the American South. The culmination of over eleven years of work from first time writer-director Robert Persons from Middle Georgia, GENERAL ORDERS No. 9 is an epic southern gothic described by the director as “deep geography” and “one last trip down the rabbit hole before it’s paved over.” The film opens at Brooklyn’s reRun Gastropub Theater on June 24, with expansion to major markets to follow. Select screenings will include a live musical performance of the score. In addition, an art exhibit featuring the director’s collection of artifacts and antique maps, as well as new art made for the film, will tour with the film to select markets.

In LiTTLEROCK, a quiet Los Angeles exurb and its shiftless young residents are seen through the eyes of two Japanese tourists in this intimate evocation of a small town where everyone’s talking, but nobody really understands. The film has been collecting awards throughout its festival run, including the Someone To Watch Award at the 2011 Independent Spirit Awards, the Best Film Not Playing At A Theater Near You Award at the 2010 Gotham Awards, and the Audience Awards at the 2010 AFI and Reykjavik Film Festivals. The film will open New York’s Cinema Village theater on August 12th, with expansion to major markets to follow.

THE WEIRD WORLD OF BLOWFLY tells the story of Clarence “Blowfly” Reid and his world, which is, admittedly, a little weird. Reid began his career as a lynchpin of the esteemed Miami soul scene, where he wrote Top-10 songs for Betty Wright, Gwen McCrae, and KC & The Sunshine Band. His insanely profane recordings as “Blowfly” have shocked audiences for over forty years, and include what may well be the world’s first rap song, recorded in 1965. Following Reid over the course of several years, filmmaker Jonathan Furmanski captures a portrait of an unheralded man who could be your cranky grandfather- until he puts on a sequined superhero costume, gets on stage, and begins to sing lyrics that would make even today’s rappers blush. The film opens in September in NYC, Los Angeles, Miami, and additional markets, alongside a day-and-date VOD, digital and Internet launch.

It shows how out of it I was in trying to be in it, acknowledging that I was out of it to myself, and then thinking, “Okay, how do I stop being out of it? Well, I get some legitimate illogical narrative ideas” — some novel, you know?

So I decided on three writers that I might be able to option their material and get some producer, or myself as producer, and then get some writer to do a screenplay on it, and maybe make a movie.

And so the three projects were “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep,” “Naked Lunch” and a collection of Bukowski. Which, in 1975, forget it — I mean, that was nuts. Hollywood would not touch any of that, but I was looking for something commercial, and I thought that all of these things were coming.

There would be no Blade Runner if there was no Ray Bradbury. I couldn’t find Philip K. Dick. His agent didn’t even know where he was. And so I gave up.

I was walking down the street and I ran into Bradbury — he directed a play that I was going to do as an actor, so we know each other, but he yelled “hi” — and I’d forgot who he was.

So at my girlfriend Barbara Hershey’s urging — I was with her at that moment — she said, “Talk to him! That guy really wants to talk to you,” and I said “No, fuck him,” and keep walking.

But then I did, and then I realized who it was, and I thought, “Wait, he’s in that realm, maybe he knows Philip K. Dick.” I said, “You know a guy named—” “Yeah, sure — you want his phone number?”

My friend paid my rent for a year while I wrote, because it turned out we couldn’t get a writer. My friends kept on me about, well, if you can’t get a writer, then you write.”

“That was the most disappointing thing to me in how this thing was played. Is that I’m on the phone with you now, after all that’s been said, and the fundamental distinction between what James is dealing with in these other cases is not actually brought to the fore. The fundamental difference is that James Franco didn’t seek to use his position to have sex with anyone. There’s not a case of that. He wasn’t using his position or status to try to solicit a sexual favor from anyone. If he had — if that were what the accusation involved — the show would not have gone on. We would have folded up shop and we would have not completed the show. Because then it would have been the same as Harvey Weinstein, or Les Moonves, or any of these cases that are fundamental to this new paradigm. Did you not notice that? Why did you not notice that? Is that not something notable to say, journalistically? Because nobody could find the voice to say it. I’m not just being rhetorical. Why is it that you and the other critics, none of you could find the voice to say, “You know, it’s not this, it’s that”? Because — let me go on and speak further to this. If you go back to the L.A. Times piece, that’s what it lacked. That’s what they were not able to deliver. The one example in the five that involved an issue of a sexual act was between James and a woman he was dating, who he was not working with. There was no professional dynamic in any capacity.
