HOT DOCS EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES: PROGRAMMING DIRECTOR AND CINEMA PROGRAMMER/BOOKER
Hot Docs is currently accepting applications for the positions of Director of Programming and Cinema Programmer/Booker.
The Director of Programming will be responsible for developing the programming vision for the Festival, continuing Hot Docs’ reputation for presenting a high-calibre documentary slate each year. The Director of Programming will also be expected to contribute to the long-term visioning and strategic planning for the organization, helping to research and shape new initiatives, and direct existing projects, both online and live-event based.
The Cinema Programmer/Booker will be responsible for developing the programming vision for the Bloor Cinema, an 800-seat century-old theatre in downtown Toronto that will re-open in fall 2011 with a documentary programming focus. The Cinema Programmer/Booker will research and source documentaries and other programming, oversee the programming process and film submission and solicitation, schedule screenings and write curatorial and film notes.
Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival is a not-for-profit organization and North America’s largest documentary festival, conference and market. Held in Toronto each spring, the Festival presents 170+ Canadian and international films to audiences exceeding 150,000. For documentary professionals, Hot Docs offers the Hot Docs Forum, its renowned international pitching event, as well as a full roster of conference sessions, market events and networking occasions. The 19th annual Hot Docs will take place April 26- May 6, 2012.
Additionally, Hot Docs also operates the Bloor Cinema, an 800-seat, century-old screening venue in Toronto, and is the event organizer for the annual World Congress of Science and Factual Producers, an international, member-run industry event.

The Director of Programming is a key member or the organization’s senior management team. S/he will be responsible for developing the programming vision for the Festival, continuing Hot Docs’ reputation for presenting a high-calibre documentary slate each year. The Director of Programming will also be expected to contribute to the long-term visioning and strategic planning for the organization, working with the development department to help research and shape new initiatives, and with the wider senior management team to help direct existing projects, both online and live-event based.
Specifically, the Director of Programming will be responsible for:
Managing the Festival’s team of programmers and directing the programming process, including film submission and solicitation, viewing and programming, screening scheduling and writing curatorial and film notes;
Overseeing programming for the national Doc Soup screening series and providing programming guidance as required for existing content partnerships;
Developing and managing departmental budgets;
Representing Hot Docs at international festivals and industry events, as well as being the primary media spokesperson for programming;
Overseeing guest filmmaker relations;
Working with the Communications Department to develop media and marketing strategies for programming;
Liaising with the Board of Director’s programming committee and reporting programming activities to the wider Board of Directors;
Contributing to industry conference and professional development programming, as required;
KEY REQUIREMENTS
Minimum eight years of programming or film festival experience, with demonstrated expertise in and in-depth knowledge of the documentary genre;
Solid grasp of theatrical and broadcast industries, both Canadian and international, familiarity with key players and an understanding of current climate faced by documentary filmmakers;
Exceptional public speaking and written communication skills;
Ability to work as a member of a high-performing team and manage large departments;
Experience in non-profit sector and bilingualism (English and French) are assets.
