Shame
Best Picture/Comedy or Musical
I would love to see a musical version of “Shame”
There are no commas in “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” 🙂
In what way is The Muppets an oddball choice for a Best Picture (Comedy/Musical) GG Nomination? I mean, isn’t it a sure-fire LOCK in this category???
we need an update for director, I feel like Payne is unexpectedly weak in that category in a year with such strong directorial achievements (if someone gets pushed out by Malick, it’s not Spielberg or Hazanavicius or Scorsese, it’s Payne). And since the Descendants is only a critics movie I feel like it’s on a long, slow slide to an end result of mediocre nominations (Clooney is still winning, imo).
Can you imagine a best director slate of Spielberg, Scorsese, Malick, Allen, & Hazanavicius? A murderer’s row of directors and the hot young prospect all at once.
Btw, Spielberg, Scorsese and Allen have all earned six oscar nominations. Spielberg and Scorsese have never been nominated in the same year before. Scorsese and Allen have never been nominated in the same year before. Allen won the only time he was up against Spielberg, of course. All three of them will tie David Lean for third place with seven director nominations, Wilder has 8, the magnificent and unappreciated Wyler has 13
If Spielberg gets a nomination, he will be the first director in history to earn nominations in five different decades.
I can’t stand “Descendants” but I would still defend it as not “only a critics’ movie.” It’s made about 10 million on not many screens and it’s clearly going to stick around for a while. I’d say it’s a success.
Also, gosh, “Artist” is sweet. But best picture? I don’t get it at all.
I saw ‘Descendants’ and ‘Hugo’. Don’t see them as Best Picture nominees. Well, not if I had a ballot anyway…
You got some strange math going on here. For instance, how is “The Ides of March” — which received two 8th place votes, a 10th place vote, and a 12th place vote — ranked below “Shame,” which only has a 10th place vote and 12th place vote?
“Shame” should have 4 pts.
“Margin Call” should have 6 pts.
“Ides of March” should have 14 pts.
“Drive” should have 5 pts.
“My Week With Marilyn,” “Like Crazy,” and “J. Edgar” should all have 1 point.
John’s right. This chart is not right. And what’s with the minus votes?!
Those of the current BP noms that won’t hold:
Young Adult
Ides of March
Shame
Margin Call
Tinker Tailor
Questionable:
Harry Potter
Extremely Loud
Tree of Life
Dragon Tattoo
Usher in:
Beginners
Like Crazy (?)
Drive (?)
I just hope all this attention to SHAME causes someone to accidentally watch Ingmar Bergman’s 1968 film of the same name. Now IT’S a masterpiece, one of that director’s best films and one of his least well known. What is it about this year? WEEKEND, SHAME? you’d think it was 1968.
