  1. Tuck Pendelton says:

The only one that I think could upset is Adapted Screenplay. Maybe Moneyball gets it, or Tinker Tailor. But every other category is pretty locked in I think.

  2. Alexandra says:

I actually feel that there could be upsets in both screenplay categories. The Artist for Original and Moneyball for Adapted.

  3. Alexandra says:

I am really curious about the screenplay categories, both original and adapted, where I think there might be upsets with The Artist and Moneyball/Hugo. Midnight in Paris might follow Inception’s path, which won at the WGA because The King’s Speech was ineligible. Inception was the movie with the interesting idea, just like MiP was last year, yet I feel it’ll lose the award in favor of the Best Picture winner.

As for Moneyball, Sorkin would have it in the bag if it wasn’t for the fact that he won last year, because of all the nominees, his piece was the most difficult one to adapt, just like The Social Network last year. Also, since both he and Payne have Oscars under their belts, John Logan might rightfully sneak in with Hugo. I can definitely see him winning – after all, the Academy does love Hugo with the 11 noms and somehow, I feel that The Descendants is this year’s Up in the Air, which was almost a lock for Best Picture and Adapted Screenplay and it lost both. The screenplays are pretty much a race, still.

What an incredibly dull year with the exception of the two African American Ladies. Now that’s exciting in any year.
But, seriously, The Artist??? I mean it was entertaining but I pretty much forgot about it as soon as I walked out of the theater. Another year that I won’t be watching the oscars.

  5. Don Kondik says:

In a year when no film really deserves the Best Picture award, it figures that a silent movie about a preening narcissist who can’t adapt to the change in his industry would be the favorite.

  6. waterbucket says:

D-Po, what made you switch your vote from Viola Davis to Meryl Streep?

  7. ALEX says:

Meryl Streep will win Best Actress. I bet on everything!!!

  8. ALEX says:

Why the hell should Davis win? Streep will always be the best…

  9. Tom says:

Yeah, I also like to know why Poland switched to Streep too. Gold Derby had Viola in a run-away.

  10. Janice says:

Probably because MS won the BAFTA–but they had to give it to someone playing a female British icon.

After the SAG and BAFTA I don’t think Best Actor is even close anymore–Dujardin is a “lock”. I mean the BAFTA could have easily gone to the sentimental favorite–Gary Oldman–and Jean STILL won.

I still (maybe the only one in the world) believe that Bejo has a strong chance to win over Spencer.

Lokk for Davis, Dujardin, Plummer, and Bejo as your winners.

  11. Billy says:

Meryl should win. She is an actress that is so far and above all others who should not be punished by the attitude that “oh, Meryl is always outstanding and gets so many nominations so lets go with this actress instead” Come on people…lets give the Best Actress Award to the actual “BEST” actress/performance and that is Meryl Streep!

  12. med says:

Sasha Stone has Viola as the predicted winner but on her site (Awards Daily) she is leaning strongly to Streep pulling it out…Perhaps you should switch her vote from VD to MS.

  13. David Poland says:

I think Best Actress could be won by any one of three actresses this year. There’s no real reason to think Viola is a lock… or Meryl… and I still think Michelle could upset both.

  14. Tom says:

David… Is that MW upset vibe you getting from Academy members you talk to or a hunch that VD and MS may split the votes. Thx!
