It sucks that FYE did not find an audience, but how about that rebound for Pirates? A much better ending than a beginning for that flick.
The story of the weekend is that the Avengers has in one weekend abroad almost generated it’s budget. It could easily be on it’s way to 400m by the end of next weekend combined, and that’s crazy.
What an impressive perf domestically by HUNGER GAMES. Now guaranteed to surpass the final Potter, and become the top grossing live-action film since AVATAR…and the 2nd biggest non-sequel in a decade.
Ethan, it’s no doubt impressive, but it’s combined number is still a bit soft. 600 million is still ridiculously impressive but considering that Avengers will match Hunger Games international total within the next week. It still intrigues me that Hunger Games didn’t blow up bigger overseas.
I don’t care enough go back three years or so ago and call out the folks here who claimed there would never be an AVENGERS film. But who watches the watchmen?
FYE seems to be the headline-grabber for disappointing opening, but didn’t Pirates have the bigger budget?
Damsels is dead… natch. will this keep whit from making another film soon?

…considering that it was a 13-plus year gap between “Last Days of Disco” and “Damsels,” Spaasky, I doubt whether Stillman would be making another film soon even if his latest were performing like this year’s “Midnight in Paris” for Sony Classics.
That’s sad, because he’s (surprisingly) not a young (or even young-ish) man.
Movieman, I think Stillman has said that he wasn’t taking a 13-year vacation; he was writing and working on other projects that didn’t go. So yeah, I do tend to think that if Damels made $50 million, he’d probably have another one going a lot sooner! Hard to say now, though.
He has seemed to be guardedly enthusiastic about that Jamaican dance movie he has been working on over the years (“Dancing Mood” … is this the title?)
this sounds anachronistic and stupid but I would love to see a reprint of his “LDOD” novelization, and perhaps that novelization of metropolitan he talks about occasioanlly in interviews…
The thirteen year old gap seems to be self-imposed as well, and pretty canny too… while I know plenty of people who were enthusiastic about his 90’s trilogy, it seems that they have only gained esteem in his absence…

I know, right? It almost made me cry seeing Eigeman on ‘Girls’ and just being like — “hey that was it, this is now. Glad he’s getting work.”
I second Spassky’s plug for THE LAST DAYS OF DISCO novelization – its amusingly meta and offers a fresh angle on the film.
As for the weak box office for DAMSELS, its too bad but the Stillman ’90s trio didn’t exactly rake in the cash either.

Maybe because most of the rest of the world had seen BATTLE ROYALE and didn’t care to waste time and money on a puerile Hollywood knock-off.
The politics kinda irked people, too. I know it may sound shocking to us, but saying “poor people = good, rich people = bad” tends to upset grime-caked rag-pickers who go to the movies because they like to fantasize about being rich.
P.S. I never understood the folks who adored Dynasty.
I just hope I live long enough to see (hopefully several) more films by Stillman before I croak.

The Hunger Games has made more than $228 million overseas. And counting. It’s the first entry in a series. What would be an acceptable foreign number for it?
Actually, the politics of it–the 1% forcing the 99% to kill each other for the 1%’s amusement and profit, not to mention their constant interference with the game (aka cheating)–is the one aspect of the film I found somewhat interesting. (BR was completely apolitical.)
Good point, Paul D/Stella, since that’s already about $30 million more than the total of the first “Twilight.”
