Weekend Estimates by Ice Klady 4
So not a lot has changed since yesterday. Spidey held a bit better than I expected, hitting $200m domestic and $520m worldwide. It’s the 3rd film this summer in each category to crack those marks. Ted remains the strongest wide-release hold with Wes & Woody having that distinction on the indie side.
The ICE AGE overseas number is just ridiculous. $339 million now internationally, putting it #4 on the year already. I guess ICE AGE 5 is pretty much official…
Along with the delightful news at Comic-Con yesterday of another MADAGASCAR…a penguin spinoff called THE PENGUINS OF MADAGASCAR.
So excited I can barely contain myself…
Decent hold for Savages. Should do about 50m which is a lot better than many thought prior to release. Saw it this weekend and it’s a real mixed bag. I think it would have benefited greatly from a different lead actress. Blake Lively was OK but saddling her with voice over made her performance seem more irritating than it probably was. I never bought her as the type who would commit herself to two different men. You need an Angelina Jolie type for that. Not sure if there is a younger blond equivalent of Jolie out there right now.
THE INTOUCHABLES has stuck at a $4K+ per theater average for weeks and weeks now. No sign of letting up. Why doesn’t Harvey try rolling the movie out to 200-300 sites? Could it really hurt that much? Is he trying to protect the profit-potential of the remake or something?
Lively is pure atomic hotness and one of the best things about the movie. She is playing a blonde, perhaps just slightly fading SoCal beach bunny. Jolie is not blonde, not an OC beach type, and is almost 40. Lively is perfect in the movie. Jesus.
Also, poor PEOPLE LIKE US, which is actually a pretty good movie with a solid Pine performance and a great Elizabeth Banks one. Assuming everyone missed my gem of a box office prediction where I presumed it would make the EXACT same amount as THE HELP.
How did THE HELP make 300 mil but PEOPLE tops out at 11? It was marketed in a way that ABSOLUTELY INFORMED YOU that if you loved THE HELP, this was something you had to see too (despite it not having anything really in common.) At the very least, as the only semi-smart adult relationship drama from a big studio kicking around, thought it would do MUCH better.
Agree with Lexg. Could not see Jolie in this role either. Lively was good. If you wanted to float other names then maybe Michelle Williams comes to mind, but I was totally satisfied with Lively.
Not to sound like Chucky but I actually think that people groan when you name check another movie in your marketing. It just smacks of desperation. If you name check TDK in TDKR, that’s okay, but what’s the connection between The Help and People Like Us?
Re-reading that, I guess BoulderKid said a “Jolie type,” meaning a newer, fresher Jolie. Which I guess Megan Fox was for a bit, but she’s both pregnant and on her way down… I guess if she’s okay with doing LOVELACE, spacey weirdo Seyfried might’ve fit the bill, but her on-screen persona is less edgy than Jolie’s and less “damaged hot girl” than Lively’s.
Lively is sexier than Seyfried. (Though again, someone should do an analysis on why on talkshows Amanda comes off as SUPER weird and out of it and Lohan-esque, then plays sweet-as-apple-pie in her romcoms.)
“People Like Us,” is not based on a hugely successful book like “The Help.” That’s how “The Help” made all the money that it did and “People Like Us” asks this question, who wants to see that movie? Seriously, who wants to see a movie where the lead character refuses to out and out tell his sister, “Hey, I am your brother. Here’s some money our dad left us.”
…and the “mismarketing” of “Moonrise Kingdom” continues.
The only way it’s being mismarketed is they’re not pushing the PERV angle. MK is a WEIRD movie. If Larry Clark made it, everyone would see this. If it creeps ME out, then that’s something.
Also Tilda Swinton in her RIDICULOUS OUTFIT would be enough to have people rioting in theaters if it played to anyone but the Anderson faithful.
I think The Help vs PEOPLE LIKE US is as much to do with the white guilt factor than being a book adaptation. It’s not like BLIND SIDE was a popular book, or EAT PRAY LOVE wasn’t. HELP/BLIND SIDE drove people to the theatre so they could help the black folk, by watching a movie that makes them feel good about themselves and never makes them uncomfortable.
On that note, I saw BEASTS OF SW in Hollywood on Friday.
150 people in the theater. Not a single black person.
Last night I dreamt I sold a screenplay by including a Lost Skeleton of Cadavra reference in there, which the reader got and that made him pass it on. I called Cadavra to let him know, but since I have no idea what he looks like, he was played by Jack Klugman.
I agree about why people aren’t seeing People Like Us. Why put off just saying “I’m your brother”?
Chris… to be clear… never once said Moonrise was mismarketed. I felt the distribution plan was a bit slow and that they wouldn’t do this well. Good on them. Good on Wes, mostly.
Lex, I wasn’t saying that Jolie herself should have played the role but a younger version of her who can exude a counter culture type vibe, fits the character’s appearance better, and is actually sexy. I know you like Lively but she doesn’t do it for me. She’s been good in other stuff like “The Town” but I don’t think she carried her weight in this one.
I actually think Reese Witherspoon could have killed this ten or fifteen years ago. I know a majority mostly identify her with June Carter and her early aughts rom-coms but I think “Freeway” shows she can play a nubile relatively innocent type in an scuzzy world like that of “Savages.”

I’m still perplexed by the raves over Moonrise Kingdom. I think it’s Anderson’s least appealing, most affected film. I liked it fine, but there was too much polish.
Wes Anderson’s cleverness is starting to come at the expense of his characters.
Lex, agreed about Seyfried on talkshows, although she comes across more standoffish and awkward than Lohan-style damaged. But I find that sort of charming, especially against her apple-pie image in most of her mainstream successes.
Also saw Beasts this weekend. I kinda felt like I didn’t get it — or at least, didn’t get what would make anyone want to see it again, which presumably some of its bigger fans (in the press and otherwise) would or did. For all of its Malick and David Gordon Green resemblances (while not being as enjoyable as any movie made by either of those directors), the movie it actually reminded me of most clearly was Gillam’s TIDELAND. In that you’re basically watching a child too young to take care of herself maker her way through a rotting, garbage-strewn world with a father who isn’t particularly smart or responsible. In Tideland, the father is dead. In Beasts, he’s dying. Beasts has a little more beauty in it, a little less grotesque, and it’s a little less tedious. But it still felt a bit more like an art project than an actual movie, and I still don’t have much patience for movies where you’re basically following a child and a crazy person bumbling through possible demises.
Also caught up with People Like Us, and I agree with Lex: good Pine, excellent Banks. And I didn’t dislike it overall, even thought Kurtzman’s direction was nice — I had heard it was surprisingly over-amped and quick-cutty for this type of movie, and there was a little of that, but I expected it to be a lot more ostentatious based on the descriptions. He tried to make it visually interesting; no real harm in that even if it results in a few too many close-ups and some pointless camera flourishes. But the script does have some big rings of falseness throughout — especially with the eleven-year-old who talks and acts like, at best, a precocious thirteen-year-old (which is to say, like an actual sixteen or seventeen-year-old). It actually managed to come off more phony than the little-kid-as-miniature-neurotic-adult act, because at least in those cases, you can figure a nerdy kid might be imitating the rhythms of books or adults or whatever. This eleven-year-old was somehow doing wiseass teenage shtick; what kid that age has the timing to pull that off? I felt bad for the kid actor, who does fine in the movie; his part is just pure screenwriter malarkey. As is most of the movie’s conflict.
But GREAT to see Banks in a leading role with lots of emotions to play, rather than just playing the wife or the girlfriend. And Pine has charisma, like a less self-conscious/smug Christian Slater. Pleasant enough, but it was like the human equivalent of those Orci/Kurtzman genre scripts that manage to be both convoluted and not really make a lot of sense.
Anyone know if Kurtzman really directed solo, or if it’s just a guild thing where it was basically the two of them but only one took credit?
Also, I realize anghus or maybe anyone else didn’t actually make this comparison, but if anyone thinks that the just-so squalor art direction and handheld camera work in Beasts of the Southern Wild are less affected, in their own way, than Anderson’s work in Moonrise Kingdom, probably has a fetish for “realness” that they don’t realize is being manipulated by Beasts.
The difference is that Anderson has more control, better writing, a stronger point of view, and a better sense of humor — and would admit that his tics are part of a style.
Foreign box office returns for the first half of the year are in by studio. Surprised that the overseas box office was up by only 1.5% overseas considering we are up about 9% domestically. Perhaps growth is finally slowing, which would be terrible for Hollywood, given the collapse of the DVD market. Percentage differences are over 2011…Disney and Fox continue to dominate, Fox largely due to Titanic. Ouchie for Paramount

DP: Actually, I was thinking of posters who’ve alleged that it was mismarketed (I think in comparison to last year’s “Midnight in Paris,” which it almost looks like it could surpass).
Curious if People Like Us might have done better if bumped back to take Ted’s original spot as lone counter-programming to Ice Age. I’m doubtful that Touchstone/Dreamworks could have seen both Ted and Magic Mike busting out as they did, but it seems like People’s appeal would carry through Dark Knight mania as well as anything without superheroes could hope to.
Then again, I found PLU to be fairly phony despite some decent performances, so what do I know?
Moonrise Kingdom is good but certainly overrated; probably Wes’s 5th best film. Nevertheless, it’s the title that’s keeping its numbers low. If they’d taken my advice and called it “Scouting for Chicks” or “Camper Scamper,” they’d be closing in on the $100 million mark.

So he’s turning into Alexander Payne? I eventually sold my copy of Election after each new viewing made it clearer that he was treating the sympathetic characters like jerks and vice-versa. Even his otherwise great The Descendants contains two scenes of Clooney running in a manner designed to get yuks, including one where he just found out his wife had been cheating on him.

Streep did pretty well as counter-programming to “The Dark Knight” three years ago.

Excellent hold for To Rome With Love (the only movie worth seeing), down just 20% despite losing 62 screens, the 3rd-smallest drop in the top 20. It’s now made $8.5 million in the US, and its worldwide take stands at $28.5 million from just 11 territories.
Everything else is utter garbage, made by imbeciles, for imbeciles.
