I don’t mean to be controversial or rude, but Quvenzhané Wallis…gimme a break. Sure, she did a competent job for an actress with age and experience against her, but Oscar worthy? She said her nonsensical lines with detachment, and looked sad. Is it that soft of a year for actresses?
Pierce Gagnon in Looper, there’s a child performance.
I have to say I kind of agree, SS. BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD is my absolute favorite film of the year thus far, but a successful performance by a person that young is, in large part, the result of brilliant direction. Another large part is instinct on the part of the actor. Virtually none of it is the craft of acting. Do we really want to nominate people for that?
It’s funny that it’s only with a black child actor that people start talking about how it’s not fair to have equal consideration. You don’t see the same “it’s not real acting!” complaints with the monotone-NPR performances of the lilywhite Moonrise Kingdom, though arguably, these performances are far less skillful than Wallis’. It’s infuriating that the white director is considered the real creator of Wallis’ performance, as though she is not worthy of equal consideration, that because she’s black she must have had more of a lift by a white person–that a white person deserves credit for her excellent work. or that we must denigrate her work by over-crediting the director in a way that is very atypical for critical response to child performances. Look at child actors that have contended over the years, they tend to get raves for doing so well, rarely are they attacked and their director praised to the extent that Wallis has been (speaking of AD forums in particular). or in this very thread, the white boy with a white director, somehow that is acting, “there’s a child performance,” is the quote, but the black girl with a white director, the white guy gets all the credit for all the black girl’s work. Let’s keep the black folks down, eh?

May be of interest only to me, but noticed that a couple of actors that made their breakthrough on the Oscar stage with Winter’s Bone are at this point well positioned for next year in each of the lead categories.
No way Watts gets nominated, even though she’s good. The backlash against that movie will be huge (in fact, I can’t believe it hasn’t started yet).

Not a race issue. I give her lots of credit for her performance, and along with that credit, I’m saying, it wasn’t that good.
If anybody should be nominated for Beasts it’s Dwight Henry.

Regarding QW’s performance…I’m looking forward to seeing it (just what I’ve seen from the previews, she looks wonderful in this movie). But don’t believe for a second the director didn’t have something to do with her performance. All the performances that will be nominated are the result of good direction (not just hers).
The travesty of this is actors being nominated for categories that they are not supposed to be.
Example: Hoffman clearly a lead in The Master, yet he is being considered for supporting! Not fair to those who are really in supporting roles!
Marion Cotillard gave the best female performance of this year and she deserves win that Oscar, and Naomi Watts should be on the list of five nominees. Please Jennifer Lawrence doesn’t deserve it.
@Felipe: According to who?….you? (LOL!). I wonder, have you seen Silver Linings Playbook?. The reason Jennifer Lawrence is receiving an enormous amount of buzz for her role as Tiffany in the film, is because Lawrence is demonstrating the kind of skill as an actress that most actresses can’t achieve until they are nearly 30. At 22, (Lawrence was 21 when she made the film!)Jennifer Lawrence is head and shoulders above her contemporaries, and, a match for the veterans out there, including Cotillard.
Jennifer Lawrence will definetly be nominated, which will be her second nom in two years!….will she win?, I don’t know for sure, but if Lawrence does win, it surely will be well deserved.
@movielocke. Oh, for God’s sake. No one’s talking about the kids from MOONRISE KINGDOM being overpraised because… nobody’s praising them much. Are their names on the lists above as Oscar contenders? No. And I can say that I did roll my eyes a bit when Anna Paquin won for THE PIANO–even though she did prove herself as a fine actress later. Sometimes, not always, but sometimes, when one criticizes something regarding someone who happens to be black, the blackness is incidental to the issue at hand (and note: nobody is criticizing Quvenzhané Wallis, just the people who would vote for her for Best Actress.)
I really don’t see all the hype on Jennifer Lawrence! She probably will be nominated but others are more deserving if we are basing it on “the best perrformance by an actress this year”!
