  1. movielocke says:

So the gurus don’t think that Silver Linings Playbook will win anything? That seems a stretch, an impossible outcome with Weinstein in the game.

  2. Dan B says:

SLP according to the Gurus will win one for Actress. With ZD30 and Argo not getting a Best Director Nomination, this seals it as Lincoln’s year. Its just a matter of how many of the 12. Year after year I wonder when Roger Deakins will win a long overdue Oscar.

  3. pj says:

“Gurus” have been selling SLP short all year long. They won’t figure it out till it’s too late.

  4. movielocke says:

Whoops, I mixed up Chastain and Lawrence when skimming the chart a second time to confirm. I still think predicting just that is ‘off.’ Harvey will guarantee the film far more awards than it deserves.

There’s a strong chance that Lincoln could whiff and strike out, Harvey will make sure Spielberg and Day Lewis are attacked as repeaters and ‘undeserving’ because they’re about to pull a Streep-peat of a third oscar (or he won’t since DeNiro is also contending to Streep-peat this year). I’m not even so sure that Lincoln is number one in score, the only crafts category where it’s competitive. Lincoln is competitive in the big 5 categories its nominated in, and score, so I think its ceiling is six wins. This smells more like a possible strikeout year than a sweep year, I just don’t see a sweep or an overperforming in the cards for it.

SLP is competitive in all the acting races except supporting actress and the other big races, probably not in editing.

Argo will win editing (unless ZD30 steals it, it’s best chance at a win outside of Chastain). Most suspenseful almost always wins. and ZD30 wasn’t nearly as tense at the end as Argo was.

Les Mis will take Hathaway and production design.

Costumes goes to AK. Most prettiest always wins.

Pi probably takes cinematography, or skyfall. Most prettiest almost always wins.

Skyfall could win all five of its categories, score usually goes to the most hummable, and that is definitely James Bond.

  5. Captain_Celluloid says:

    CINEMATOGRAPHY;

My vote would go to Roger Deakins for SKYFALL as the final look of the film is 99% pure unfutzed with cinematography . . . . not to mention after 11 nominations it’s probably “his turn.”

Claudio Miranda did a great job on LIFE OF PI . . . however the bulk of much of the film’s tasty imagery that everyone “oo’s and ah’s” over is CGI and not pure cinematography per se. Not to take away from Miranda’s work but not to disproportionately and somewhat inaccurately add to it either.

OBTW I thought Miranda deserved the Oscar for THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON.

Oddly over the years the cinematographers in the cinematography branch seem to have a counter intuitive tendency to award “the prettiest pictures in the most popular film” rather than the most creative use of pure cinematography.

  6. movielocke says:

Skyfall was digital, so it is inherently futzed with.

Probably every film (on film) that you can think of that has ‘pure’ cinematography or ‘unfutzed’ with cinematography was intensely and deliberately manipulated in the color timing phase (and yes, black and white films were timed as well). Everything is futzed with, you’re just buying into a silly purity myth.

Using power windows on a DaVinci or replacing a sky is not substantially different from film processing techniques that could accomplish something similar, just without the pinpoint accuracy and insanely fine tuned control computers allow.
