Couldn’t believe how awful A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III is. The only redeeming quality: It actually makes me want to go back and take a second look at Who is Harry Kellerman and Why is He Saying Those Terrible Things About Me?
I’m having a doozy of a time picking my oscar winners for this year’s pool (and I’ve won it for the last few years in a row so I’m thinking I’m gonna screw the pooch this year – last year I got them all right, which i could hardly believe), it is just me? it it a good thing that ‘the race’ doesn’t seem like most categories are all sewn up this year? i don’t know… but i kinda give even less of a shit this year than most too, i don’t have any film or perf i’m rooting for like a nutjob, which is a bummer.
I think it’s a very predictable race this year. Of course, it could all turn out to be full of surprises, but if it goes according to conventional wisdom

There is a lot of talk that Lawrence will pull the upset on Chastain thanks to Harvey lobbying. There’s a sentimental bunch who think Tommy Lee Jones wins for Lincoln. I would think Hathaway and Daniel Day Lewis are about as mortal a lock as you’re ever going to get. I’m hoping Argo wins. And honestly would love to see Lawrence win over Chastain. ZD30 was criminally overrated and like Les Mis one of those movies that seems to be nominated out of obligation rather than real, heartfelt passion for the film itself.
I’m still scratching my head at the screenplay nomination for Boal. If that’s good writing, then i don’t get good writing. The thing reads like redacted documents in an .fdx format.
Seriously: I think many people admire the ZD30 screenplay for the same reason William Goldman once singled out as one of his primary challenges in scripting All the President’s Men — how do you sustain suspense when everyone in the theater knows how your story will end?
Lawrence upsetting Chastain? What cave have you been living in?
The upset possibility here is Riva over Lawrence, who’s been the frontrunner for quite some time.
Speaking of the Weinsteins, they blew it by not screening “Dark Skies.” It’s smart, unsettling, fun.
We’re all screwing the pooch this year; the pools will be won by whomever makes the best lucky guesses.

I don’t think wins for Chastain and Waltz are “conventional wisdom” at this point. As lazarus says, it looks like Lawrence with Riva a strong potential upset; and the Supporting Actor race seems like a toss-up, with Jones slightly favored.
I liked Zero Dark Thirty, but I do think Boal is stronger as a reporter than a dramatist (though I say this without having seen The Hurt Locker). Most of the little “humanizing” moments given to Chastain’s character seem like they’re drawn from the movies rather than real life, so they don’t quite mesh with the rest of the story. Without them, though, the story would probably be too cold and clinical, so maybe it was an impossible job and he did it as well as anyone else could have.

Denzel was incredible in Flight. I think that was one of his best performances ever.
There was a great THR piece where some cranky voter shared all his rambling thoughts on the voting process. It does more to erradicate the legitimacy of awards shows than any well thought out piece.
If you didn’t think art should be reduced to political style campaigning and voting before, you may feel differently after.
I don’t read a lot of THR pieces, and after this one i probably won’t again. Not because of the content, but of this weird thing where they link another story after every paragraph. You’d finish one paragraph and underneath you see a huge red link

Sam, shame on you for promoting those asinine fucking “Everything Wrong with” videos. They’re nitpicky, snarky, and smug, pointless at best and willfully misunderstanding the movie in order to complain at worst. It’s the same bullshit as Red Letter Media, where “film criticism” gets reduced to nitpicking plot points and explaining why storytelling that doesn’t come from Syd Field 101 is “wrong.” It’s fucking nauseating.
I’ve won the office pool two years in a year (only missed one last year) but feel like I’m going to “screw the pooch” this year as well. I initially put a lot of conventional picks, but then physically crossed off in pen a lot. All of those as follows, FWIW:

That’s all I can remember… but I think a lot of this is up in the air… especially actress. I actually have a strong feeling that Riva will win. The other upsets… not so much.
Also FWIW: I’m surprised no one has said that Deniro is the assumed front runner, because it’s seemed that way from my perspective, at least.
This seems like the most up-in-the-air Oscar race across the board in
Daniel Day-Lewis is the only one where I don’t see a viable and possible-seeming alternative. Hathaway is pretty close to locked, too. But I could see arguments for Argo, SLP, or Lincoln for Picture (though it will probably be Argo); Spielberg, Lee, or Russell for Director (it surprises me that so many have gone with the conventional wisdom that Lee is now about as likely as Spielberg to win. Why?! And I ask that as someone who really liked Life of Pi). Riva, Lawrence or (outside shot) Chastain for Actress. Supporting Actor, I honestly feel all of them have a shot and have little idea who will actually win. (I know it’s not scientific at all, but EW always talks to a few anonymous industry people about who they’re voting for, and a shocking number of them said Hoffman for supporting. He’d be my vote, and I’d love to see him win, but it seems unlikely. But less impossible than I would’ve thought.)
Argo or Lincoln for Adapted; ZD30 or Django or Amour for Original. Even Editing, I have no idea. Everyone is saying Argo because they assume it’s winning Best Picture, but the Picture/Editing match has, like the Picture/Director match, grown a bit further apart in the past ten years.

Have to agree with Jesse regarding the merits of the Everything Wrong With videos. They’re completely moronic and display a wilful ignorance of the films they supposedly critique. Some of the points made are clearly only included as an attempt at humor but if you find the two videos I watched amusing – Looper and Prometheus – then let’s just say you’ve a very different sense of humor to me.

watched independent spirit awards 2013 – since this awards show is on ifc – they can get away with more stuff…mostly they can swearing and the sponsors are more direct in your face …. a bunch of beer companies sponsored this thing and gave away money to film makers .. Andy Samberg was just alright… he was making adult jokes while that kid from the beasts movie was there. the good new is they kept this at 1 hour and 30 minutes. something that oscars just won’t do .
also i want a dp30 for Playing for Keeps (2012) – how do actors defend their movie in any way when its at 4% on rottontomotoes ? it would be easier to explain if this was some first feature but there are 4 big movie stars in this .

I’m sure I like LES MIZ more than most here, but boy, it does have a lot of problems. I saw it on the same day as ANNA KARENINA, which I initially thought wasn’t quite as successful an adaptation, but I find it has resonated more, and its failures are so ambitious I now hold it in higher esteem.
I’m always behind on the year’s best, so I probably couldn’t put together a meaningful top ten until 2018, but as of now I’d include most of those I’ve mentioned so far, plus DAMSELS IN DISTRESS, BRAVE and the much-maligned THIS IS 40, as well as another Apatow production, THE FIVE-YEAR ENGAGEMENT.
Jesse- I actually think “Miz” is even more embarrassing than “ELAIC.”
I’d almost rank it w/ “Airport” (or “Love Story”) from 1970’s crop of BP nominees.
I don’t think Les Mis is any kind of great movie, but I at least enjoyed it as entertainment, which was not true of ELAIC. Maybe it was because I hadn’t actually seen the stage show so I was a bit more interested in the material than I might have otherwise been. And I do think Hooper has revealed a very limited bag of tricks as a director. But it wasn’t as much of a cloying, suffocating failure as Extremely Loud and Extremely Close, as someone on GIRLS called it a few weeks ago.
I’d also put Les Mis above Best Picture nominees like Chocolat, The Cider House Rules, The Hours, A Beautiful Mind, Chicago, Ray, The Reader, The Blind Side… man, looking at that list, I have to reminder myself that it’s OK, the Oscars don’t matter that much and movies like No Country for Old Men, The Departed, True Grit, A Serious Man, Up, Inception, The Tree of Life, There Will Be Blood, and Moulin Rouge all did make it as nominees, too…
I’ll give you “A Beautiful Mind,” Jesse, but–flaws and all–I’ll still take “The Hours,” “Chicago,” “The Reader” “Chocolat” and “The Blind Side” over the “Miz”-erable one any day. (Hooper’s “King’s Speech,” too.)
But I think “Ray” is a terrific musical biopic (although hardly worthy of one of 2004’s five coveted BP slots), and still believe that “Cider House Rules” is a small classic.
This is the most important night of the year, if not our lives.
I still contend The Reader is an exceptional and heartbreaking film and deserved a nomination.
If Argo wins BP it will do Driving Miss Daisy one better than winning without a Best Director nomination. It will be the first BP win also without a Best Actor/ Actress nomination since Grand Hotel in 1932.
Looks like I stepped on some nerves by pointing out that Looper and Prometheus were deeply flawed movies.
And no, I don’t find the “Everything Wrong With” videos amusing, I find their very existence infuriating because it means filmmakers and studios are content to release films that are so horribly screwed up.
As I noted, I complained over a month ago that Looper was a mess and was shouted down by some who found it deep or artistic; the EWW video points out, as I did, that many of the key plot points make no sense and the ending should technically erase the last two-thirds of the movie.
Perhaps the problem is that I am conversing with folks who see movies as a jobs program or a revenue stream rather than works of art. They are the historical record for the time they were created. We think Vikings wore horned helmets because opera told us so. We think cowboys wore ten-gallon hats because the serials told us so. And decades from now, long after we’re gone, anyone who wants to know what life was like in the late 20th or early 21st centuries will look at the movies for their answer.
What they’ll see is that we must’ve been pretty darn gullible to patronize crap like this.
And we all wore trucker caps.
(cf. “Birth of a Nation” and “Gone With the Wind” as proof that folks who lived a century ago were racist as heck.)

i like his podcasts a lot but all of them are 2 hours long or more. i guess the strange thing about oomics is they can be super serious if they want too.
By the way, there’s a difference between “nitpicking”, like we see too often in this video (it’s mostly continuity errors, like when Harry’s shirt flips between being over or around his shoulder), and pointing out conceptual flaws that seriously affect the story, like the infamous tank missile.
I’m guessing the tank missile was something whipped up in post because it was a “cool” idea that would look great in the trailer, yet no one thought that Iron Man possessing such a thing should radically affect the ending of the movie. By then it was too late to go back for reshoots, but at the least there should have been some sort of comment inserted to explain why he didn’t have another one to use on Stane. The “coolest” outcome would be if Stark did fire a tank missile at Stane, but it spun out of control like this before exploding harmlessly because Stane had already prepared a countermeasure.
That’s what you get for showing off your coolest weapon halfway though the movie.
This laziness, this tendency to go for shots that look “cool” but make no sense feels like exactly what happened to comics twenty years ago. A new generation of hip young artists who, unlike their predecessors, never went to art school but learned to draw by copying comics ended up dragging the entire medium down to a low point that it has yet to recover from. They didn’t care about story or dialogue or continuity or any of that crap (the first volume of The Avengers, for example, lasted 30 years before it was “rebooted” in ’96; it has been rebooted four more times since then), they drew huge explosions and girls with legs 3x longer than their torsos because IT LOOKED COOL. Several of these no talent hacks ran off to Hollywood, which embraced their visual style and lack of interest in “story” (snicker), and so now we’re stuck with action movies that look great but make no sense whatsoever.
Just wait till you guys see my film. The only things that LOOK COOL are paintings!
Unfortunately, the only two movies I’ve really enjoyed over the last several months–Seeking A Friend For the End of the World and Robot and Frank–both hinge on medical conditions that seem sketchy at best, so I’m wondering if anyone can confirm that it’s possible to
a) sleep so deeply that you don’t even notice you’re being loaded into a tiny plane, or
b) have a compartmentalized form of dementia that lets you remember one child with perfect lucidity, think a middle-aged child is still in college, and completely forget something with such totality that you’d think a really ugly lobotomy must’ve been involved.

Yeah, I’d already assumed “dementia” was pretty much the same as Alzheimer’s, but the case presented in the movie was so necessarily selective it seemed like a gimmick.
I’ll probably rent it again just to listen to the entire commentary track–it was especially neat to hear that the photo we see at the beginning which reveals that Frank just tried to rob his own house was a real photo of Langella and his two kids, who just happened to fit the birth order and gender of his kids in the movie (and yes, the director mentioned that the character’s name was Frank when it was originally a student film, long before they hired Frank Langella).

this will probably get awards buzz …super serious movie critics are writing huge articles now about how amazing this movie is …. Leo and Martin should have had 3 dp/30’s by now….Leo seems to be the higgest private movie star around. Dujardin and Mconaughey and maybe Hill if he’s around will get dp/30’s . i can predict dp/30’s 6 months from now .

sanj: Why would David bring up music and TV work? It’s not off-limits, but this is a MOVIE site, so big surprise if the interviews focus on movies. And while 30 minutes is a long time compared to celebrity interviews on late night television, it’s still way too short to be comprehensive. Obviously you’re not going to get a complete biography of anybody in a DP/30.
I can’t quite figure out how you seem to live and breathe DP/30. I like them too, but they mean more to you than actual movies, which is completely backwards.
And as for obsessing over who’s done DP/30s and who might do them and who didn’t do them but could have — gosh, how much time do you think David has? Or them? You do realize that people besides David Poland interview celebrities, right? Finally, why do you comment about specific DP/30s in BYOB threads like this one, instead of the comments section for the actual DP/30 itself? You know, where anybody else who wants to discuss it will be looking?
Brie Larson does a lot of tv series – DP never asked her about any of that…she also sings…why isn’t she in more musicals .
i listen to a ton of audio interviews – a lot of the time when actors go way off topic it makes them better.
my favorite interview is Stephen Colbert – he is one of
the rare interviewers who does it right and i end up
remembering 95% of the actual interview.
the actors i find interesting aren’t the ones DP does.
sometimes thats a good thing actually.
Lopez hasn’t done dp30 before …she’s done to a few movies a year and doing reality shows…when she does
interviews it always turns into fashion stuff. DP don’t
do fashion unless its a tux. DP spends 5 minutes sometimes
just talking about tuxes . actors do have great stories about tuxes.
i post the dp30 reviews on here cause maybe DP wants faster feedback.
its really too bad that DP didn’t get LexG to interview K-Stew for her movies.
