Well, you got me to Google Charles Manson. I learned that Gov. Brown reversed a parole board decision today and denied release to former Manson follower Bruce Davis. Is there some other Manson news I’m unaware of?

  2. PcChongor says:

Apparently tonight it was announced that he’s set to be the focus of the new Bruce Sinofsky documentary, “Paradise Lost 4: Okay, Just Hear Us Out On This One.”

  3. GexL says:

Oh, what a wonderful feeeeeling! Oh what a wonderful day: Lex is back.

  4. etguild2 says:

On a more depressing note…..I’m not screaming slump, but I think it’s pretty clear the box office is going to take a beating this year. We’re behind last year by 12%, which isn’t good considering March last year had LORAX and HUNGER GAMES. We’re going to head into summer down 20%, and with no AVENGERS or BATMAN, things might stay down 20%.

Given that foreign theatrical was pretty flat last year, not good. Warner Brothers, in particular, seems intent on burning as much cash as possible, and I’d be jumping ship right now if I was a Time Warner shareholder. They have a lot riding on SUPERMAN.

November Rain music video was one of the first early videos that looked like a movie .. this 10 minute video has 150 million views…i would cut 2 minutes . a nice look back when slash had that hat on and playing his guitar and axl rose looked human ..

does anybody care about this or the band ? guns and roses made a ton of music videos but only if they had a music tv station to play them on .. 1000’s of old 80’s bands now only exist on youtube .

mtv screwed up music – why aren’t more critics mad about this …

  6. anghus says:

I think Lex is applying for a writing job on next years Oscar telecast.

  7. christian says:

DP must love cleaning up after his pets

  8. David Poland says:

You’re fighting a fight that over 2 years old, Christian. Give it a rest.

  9. Lex says:

    Christian.

    Give the man a hand.

  10. etguild2 says:

In dream-casting news for Lex, Emma Watson is in talks for live-action “Cinderella,” which of course means lots of screen time for Ms. Watson’s feet.

  11. movieman says:

Moronic (or is that “oxymoronic”?) title aside, “Last Exorcism 2” isn’t appreciably worse than the (mildly overrated) original.
Ashley Bell is once again terrific, and they make really nice use of the New Orleans locations.
Bell deserves to graduate from B-horror like Mary Elizabeth Winstead did in “Smashed” last year.
“21” gets reasonable mileage out of its one-joke premise, thanks largely to Teller, Chon and (especially) Astin who’s, once again, the best thing about a fairly mediocre movie, just like he was in last fall’s “Pitch Perfect.”
“Giant Slayer” is just one massive train wreck, though.
“Warm Bodies” notwithstanding, it proves that Hoult (aka Hugo Weaving Jr.) is incapable of carrying a movie.
Not even Tucci’s amusingly foppish heavy or McGregor’s affable heroics can save the day.
Could they have really spent $200-million on this?
    How?
    Why?

  12. sanj says:

hey DP – whats your limit of watching movies more than once ?… i mean people must be throwing dvds at you all the time and your on your 12th viewing of zero dark thirty ..
does it actually help in interviews ? some movies it really might like looper cause of the crazy story line but then you don’t use any of that because you don’t want to spoil the movie ending …also i fear that Mark Duplass will end up with 4 dp/30’s this year.

    quick dp30 thoughts

Alison Klayman – waiting for something that doesn’t deal with Ai WeiWei …

Ellen Page – she didn’t say nothing in dp30 – makes me like her less.

Dane Cook dp/30 – wasn’t the greatest dp30 and he never came back

Hannah Simone dp30 – was good – i knew her story but
there are 6-10 people from muchmusic you should interview. tv hosting doesn’t get enough coverage.
you missed out on Olivia Munn from g4 tv

Brie Larson dp30 – you let her ramble on and on which would be fine but you didn’t ask her about any tv / music work

Alex Gibney – why doesn’t this dude just do dozen mini docs for pbs.

Mighty Fine – Rainey Qualley – look i made one movie and got lucky and got a dp30 .

Seann William Scott – he knows international movies and needs another dp30

Morgan Spulock – that comic con movie – why didn’t any
of those people get super famous like they should cause
    of the geeks

Tony Kaye – fun dp30 – whats this old guy up too

Leslye Headland – fun dp30 – whats she up too ?

i got way more but i’ll stop . DP you have so many exclusive interviews but these people don’t come back
    for 6 months or later…

also when people have a serious gripe of dp30 and they think its your fault does it matter ? regular people vs other movie critics ..

also – any actor ask to take down their dp30 cause they hate it ?

  13. sanj says:

DP – NerdzRL needs a dp30 – super fun – could be as popular
as Jen Lawerence or Emma Stone .

fun 5 minute video – stick around till the end.

    NerdzRL van surfing

  14. sanj says:

watched a place at the table dp30

    – overall this was alright

    – DP you didn’t bring up walmart or mcdonalds . 2 big food companies. how come nobody seems to blame them for any of this ?

    – DP you didn’t bring up the united nations food program they have and if its used in the US

    – DP didn’t mention farmers. you know the guys who have tons of food …

    – isn’t it weird that people in movie theatres they sell junk food for like 7-10 bucks and nothing truly healthy .

    – this interview need real food for examples .. tell people to eat fresh fruits instead of junk food. would take 2 minutes.

    – DP you should have done this interview inside a supermarket or a food bank.

    – DP – remember that war on drugs guy – Eugene Jarecki … you did 5x better job at explaining that issue .

  15. christian says:

DP, that’s what Nikki Finke told me!

  16. David Poland says:

    I don’t get that, Christian.

I’ve written significantly less about Nikki as she’s deteriorated.

  17. cadavra says:

David, I think Christian was riffing on sanj’s post.

  18. Foamy Squirrel says:

So I finally saw Django over the weekend (yeah yeah, but I’ve been working in the Philippines last 2 months and it doesn’t get released there until April so saw it on a weekend trip to Hong Kong).

Holy shit was the last 30 minutes a complete clusterfuck. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a movie squander such a terrific 2 hours just to blow it all at the end.

  19. sanj says:

hey i noticed that DP did get some dp30’s from Hitchcock (2012) but Anthony Hopkins – Helen Mirren the most important actors of their generation didn’t do any interview with DP . so how important are they really ?

i’m guessing that Hopkins was answering all his fanmail from that Hannibal movie and Mirren is busy telling people all day long she’s not Judi Dench …but getting Jessica Biel was a nice distraction.

Hopkins is too old and famous for a dp30 .

also if Alfred Hitchcock guy was so great why didn’t he get a dp30 back in the 90s…i bet Joe Leydon -was busy interviewing him… and DP couldn’t wait cause some big time 90’s actor wanted a dp30 .

  20. etguild2 says:

Foamy, when Waltz says “I couldn’t resist” just before everything hits the fan, it’s really QT talking, and apologizing for the fact that he couldn’t control his bloodlust any longer.

  21. YancySkancy says:

Google is your friend, sanj. Although this gives me an idea for a new direction for the DP30s–if Dave can hook up with a medium, which shouldn’t be hard in L.A., he could get some amazing interviews with departed greats. GOOD IDEA.

  22. anghus says:

“I’ve written significantly less about Nikki as she’s deteriorated.”

    Physically or Ethically?

  23. sanj says:

this is nearly impossible but – old cool science dude Stephen Hawking is still alive . DP should get a dp30 and ask about space movies .

  24. etguild2 says:

It’s kind of depressing the number of really good movies that have been largely ignored already this year…”Side Effects,” “Lore,” “Ceasar Must Die,” “Hors Satan,” and “Like Someone in Love” all all great. Even Herzog is getting the shaft this quarter.

  25. Triple Option says:

I saw Side Effects and enjoyed it. I knew very little about it before heading in. Some things I’ve read have stated that the promos for it were very different from what the movie actually was. I wonder how much “not what I expected” factors into word of mouth. This is purely anecdotal and subjective but I wonder how close it is to a negative review?? Whenever I hear about a movie “it was OK, just not what I thought it’d be” I tend to be a bit cautious of it for whatever reason. If it’s more specific like “it was more violent than I thought” or “more emotionally involving than what I expected” I will rate accordingly but the “no, it was fine, just different” I don’t know what to do with. I wonder how many people are like that.

  26. Lex says:

How do you post a whole paragraph about SIDE EFFECTS and NOT mention that Rooney Mara plays the IDEAL WOMAN in it and is so hot you couldn’t even contain your enthusiasm and it sent you into a tailspin of depression knowing you’ll never meet THE MOST BEAUTIFUL WOMAN ALIVE?

  27. Foamy Squirrel says:

et – if Tarantino just wanted a shootout, there are a dozen ways of setting it up without having the most meticulous character effectively committing suicide in a room full of guns.

But it doesn’t stop there – Stephen is 100% correct that Django (and Hilde) has lost his freedom through his actions, and our sympathy for Django takes a beating when he decides to shoot anyone associated with slavery even if the audience has only seen them portrayed tempering the excesses of those around them.

And that’s not even taking into account the Hollywood physics where Django hides behind an apparently bulletproof leg, and shoots other people with a pistol to watch them fly 20 feet back at a 90 degree angle.

It loses 40 IQ points in the span of 2 minutes, for me it’s just a massive waste of a good movie.

  28. sanj says:

side effects – i really figured that DP and Soderbergh were friends and he would get Rooney Mara a dp30 ..Kate Mara also needs a dp30 ..probably some other maras that hare hidden also need a dp30 .

DP isn’t that super amazing at getting siblings for dp30 .

owen and luke wilson need some dp30’s . they must be buddies with that wes anderson guy who needs a new dp30 .

DP did get maggie gyllenhaal dp30 who i hated and jake g dp/30 which i really liked.

also hilary duff and mandy moore – teen pop icons for teens haven’t done anything but are probably millionaires… they need a dp30 so DP can ask them when they will be in something good.

  29. etguild2 says:

Agreed Foamy.SPOILERS. A big problem is the fact Django and Hilde are essentially ciphers. Once Dr. King and Calvin eat it, it’s hard to keep interest period.

  30. cadavra says:

    SPOILERS, OBVIOUSLY:

Foamy: I interpreted that scene as Schultz knowing they were never going to get out of there alive, so he figured he’d shoot Candie first and at least eliminate the head villain.

But I agree that that final shootout makes little sense. Killing the sister–the one person there who was not only nice to him but actually saved his dick (literally)–was a bonehead move and drained most of the sympathy we had for him, especially after he kept making such a big deal about killing Bacall in front of his son.

  31. sanj says:

the mindy project is renewed for new season … arggggg.

Mindy Kaling is good with stories but not good with the funny part.

if this show got cancelled she would have been on a funnier sitcom of some sort.

half the cast on the show is totally useless .

of course mindy gets no dp30 either to explain her funny sitcom on fox. nobody on that show gets a dp30.

she got super lucky for all that office tv work she did.

anybody find the mindy project funny ?

lexg writes funnier stuff than mindy.

if DP can use his super movie critic superpowers to get this show cancelled that be great….mindy should be
doing voice overs for every single disney pixar movie.

  32. Foamy Squirrel says:

Cad – I don’t know if I’d agree with you on the Schultz/Calvin thing.

It was established earlier that plantation owners and their hands were perfectly willing to maintain the forms of propriety as long as they “won” in the end. Calvin clearly feels he’s “won”, and doesn’t even really understand the source of the conflict – for him, it’s just about the contest of wills as he doesn’t really see the slaves as people any more. That’s why he gets confused over the D’Artagnan thing, not just because of the Tarantino-Dumas factoid, but because he can’t understand that this is about human dignity in the first place.

To compound it all, money is treated weirdly in the film – it’s clearly not a motivator for Schultz as he calmly drops it on the ground when he’s fully aware it’s going to be taken from the recipient in the next few minutes, and Calvin is willing to take only a portion of Schultz’s sizable billfold. So despite the fact that money is what gets Calvin’s attention (as opposed to his curiosity), it stops being about money very quickly.

  33. sanj says:

Chuck Close paintings . 10 minutes – the audio sucks.

some amazing paintings – just check out the first 2 minutes of Bill Clinton picture…

  34. sanj says:

DP/30 @ SXSW: I Am Divine – i liked the last 10 minutes about dvd extras not that interested in the doc

DP/30 @ Cannes ’12: Reality – this was alright – why did it take 1 year before posting ..

DP/30: War Witch, – i liked this – mostly how he brings up movies at random times

DP/30 @ SXSW: Short Term – so far i’m kinda right – nobody is quoting anything she said in the comments …
    – a good dp30 is where people remember the stuff people said … Sam Jakkson and Jen Lawrence got tons of quotes.

  35. sanj says:

    5 second fun.

    Christina Hendricks is married ..

  36. sanj says:

Hugo Chavez dead – big leader . guessing somebody is making a movie for oscar season next year. Benicio Del Toro looks like him so he’ll win best actor. DP should interview him now before everybody else .

  37. Lex says:

    LOL ^

  38. scooterzz says:

    hollywood elsewhere.com: R.I.P.

  39. Lex says:

It’s just down for his switchover, no?

Which means, knowing Wells’ standard top-notch tech know-how and good fortune, it’ll be a bug-ridden clusterfuck for about a month, and he’ll be bitching about it for about three.

  40. etguild2 says:

I still don’t know how I feel about Franco…he either comes off as a charming eccentric, or a smug little shit depending on his mood. Sam Raimi said something fascinating about Franco in an interview with Vulture, that he has an “addiction to the arts” and that he must be constantly reading or discussing something in order to function.

Unfortunately, this means that his level of interest varies wildly from movie to movie, and early reviews of him in “Oz” are not kind. On the other hand, he’s brilliant in “Spring Breakers.”

  41. Joe Leydon says:

Scoot: What do you mean? The site is still on-line.

  42. Jermsguy says:

Yeah, I was bugged Django killed the sister too. I re-read the end from his 2011 draft and he made some minor changes. There’s no shootout when Schultz kills Candie. He gets shotgunned, and then Django gets knocked out. In the final showdown he makes all the white folks stand apart from the black folks (except Stephen) and then he insists Lara Lee has a gun so she has a chance to defend herself. And the Ace Woody part to have been played by Costner is one evil evil character.

  43. sanj says:

out of nowhere DP added old dp/30’s ..which is good for history….but it also shows that people don’t come back for years ..like musical dude Adam SHankman got a dp30 for hairspary but dude didn’t get a dp30 for rock of ages musical …

DP/30: Trucker, actor Michelle Monaghan – this is fun. LOOK AT HER!!!

DP/30: South Of The Border, documentarian Oliver Stone – only watch this if your super smart ..also bad camerawork.
