Evil Dead is good but it really could have used a little more fun in the proceedings. By fun I don’t necessarily mean camp, I wasn’t expecting AOD. The kills were gross but a little too methodical. I guess I wish most of the movie were as good as the last ten minutes, which skims the surface of being bonkers-fun-WTF. Jane Levy is the goods, FYI.
Trailer for Carrie suggests another remake that might not suck. Someone please tell me Cloe Moritz is at least 18 because, well, boner.
Also, first?
I had the same problem with the new “Evil Dead” that I did w/ “Cabin in the Woods” last year.
Both were so wildly oversold by their fanboy base that anything less than the reinvention of the modern horror film-which neither is; not even remotely–made them seem like disappointments.
It’s well-made, the performances are better than they had to be but the total humorlessness (or “fun” as Amblin said) made it feel like kind of a drag.
And anyone who insists that it’s the goriest horror movie ever clearly hasn’t been watching “The Walking Dead.”
Have to disagree w/ Amblin re: the “Carrie” trailer, though.
It just looks like a slicker, glossier, PG-13 version of the (could never be improved upon) DePalma original with (yawn) 21st century CGI.
Plus, Moretz lacks Spacek’s fragile, heartbreaking vulnerability. After all, this is the same kid best known for her foul-mouthed vigilante in “Kick-Ass.”
I also find it funny/ironic that Moretz seems too…young; especially since my standard beef w/ most high school movies is that the actors invariably look too, uh, mature for their roles.
The Carrie trailer is such an interesting thing because the trailer leaves nothing for the uninitiated, which is odd because it’s like its being marketed with the idea that MGM and Screen Gems knows the bulk of the audience has probably seen the original.
That’s weird. I used to think remakes were designed for a new generation of potential fans, and im sure there is that aspect. But doesnt that trailer seem to play like “Hey guys, you know this movie… the one that is so woven into the fabric of pop culture… well here’s the remake”.
I know people complain about giving away everything in the trailer, but damn… the whole movie is there from start to finish. It’s like watching a two minute version of the film. Weird times.
Can’t decide – is that a good number for Upstream Color? Or does it even matter, since its mostly going to be a VOD thing from the looks of it?
Smith, DVD and Blu-Ray on May 7. Carruth says he wants to get on with shooting a new movie, THE MODERN OCEAN, this summer and be done with this and the non-making of A TOPIARY.
I never know how to read limited numbers… TRANCE and COMPANY YOU KEEP seem fairly similar, no? Shouldn’t TRANCE have been some HOLY SHIT, every-show-sold-out, MAJOR LA/NYC buzz kinda deal?
How does Searclight– and Focus, too– manage to flub 98% of their movies with the SAME RELEASE PATTERN then just do it over and over and over and over? For every Black Swan or Moonrise Kingdom that they nurture into a hit, there’s a hundred other Trances or Stokers or Convictions (or Pines or Somewheres or Pariahs, for Focus) that all just get the half-assed “first week, 4 in NY/LA, expand it a week later, gone in three” pattern.
Shouldn’t Trance at least be leaving the Redford movie in the dust?
Let the record show that this is actually the THIRD version of CARRIE–there was a TV-remake some years back. There was also a CARRIE II that was in theatres for about five-and-a-half minutes. All from the company that also remade PELHAM ONE TWO THREE twice.
Did you change your font there? Little hard to read.
Amblinman: Chloe Moretz just turned 16 last month, which may be a problem depending on the laws in your state.
Moretz is the 2nd best American actress, one of my absolute favorites. If you saw HICK or LET ME IN then you know her range. She could best Spacek, but nobody can best TRAVOLTA in his most glorious hair.
That new CARRIE trailer has a sickly, sinister, warped quality and having Peirce behind the camera could be interesting…. though the whole “let a feminist director take her turn with the material” was already what Katt Shea did with the aforementioned RAGE CARRIE 2.
Moretz was good in Let Me In and I’ve enjoyed her in a few other things (she was hilarious in her 30 Rock appearances) but she has a very child-actory veneer; polished, but sounds like she’s reciting lines — not unlike Anne Hathaway when she was younger, although with more interesting roles and maybe a touch less charisma. From the trailer, her Carrie looks a lot less convincing than her Let Me In vampire — all I can see is golden girl Chloe Moretz playing the twitchy outcast. Spacek came off like an actual twitchy outcast.
I think that’s because Spacek IS a twitchy outcast.
On a related note, HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Kristen Stewart and Elle Fanning. Yay and YAY! CUTE CUTE!!!!

And look how well that turned out, lol.
I remain unconvinced by Pierce. Always thought “Boys Don’t Cry” was wildly overrated, and “Stop-Loss” is really kind of a dud.
