Kino Lorber and Adopt Films Pact on an Exclusive Distribution Deal
NEW YORK, NY – May 9, 2013 – Kino Lorber is pleased to announce that it has signed an exclusive agreement to distribute selected titles from Adopt Films on home media and digital platforms. Adopt is a leading theatrical distributor of critically acclaimed world cinema and documentary features.
Designed to cover packaged media (Blu-ray and DVD), all digital markets and educational rights, this deal is set to begin with the DVD and Blu-ray release of Christian Petzold’s Barbara and The Taviani Brothers’ Caesar Must Die. After it premiered at last year’s New York Film Festival, Barbara went on to play in over 100 theatrical markets nationwide and is poised to join a handful of international films to gross over $1,000,000 theatrically in the US. Caesar Must Die won last year’s Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival and was one of the top reviewed films of 2012. Both films are still playing at select art house theaters throughout the country. Adopt Films, which specializes in international and independent American cinema, will continue to release between 8 and 12 new titles per year, all of which are expected to open in select theaters nationwide. The company was co-founded by industry veteran Tim Grady, President of Adopt, and art house pioneer Jeff Lipsky, who heads distribution. Adopt Films’ Tim Grady says: “We’re thrilled to be working with Richard Lorber. I’m a great admirer of the DVD and VOD platform that Richard and Don Krim have developed and honed at Kino Lorber and, of course, their direct-to-consumer cinephile catalogue is the best in the business. We look forward to an enduring and successful relationship.” Richard Lorber, President and CEO of Kino Lorber, added, “We are honored to have been “adopted” by Tim and Jeff to handle their outstanding line up of award winning festival darlings that have also scored impressive box office results – a rare achievement. Adopt Films and Kino Lorber share a similar creative DNA and we will give Adopt’s packaged media and digital releases the same the loving attention as our own natural born.” Paolo and Vittorio Taviani’s Caesar Must Die and Christina Petzold’s Barbara are two of an impressive list of films that also include Ursula Meier’s Sister, a 2012 Berlin Competition Silver Bear winner, and Miguel Gomes’ Tabu, the winner of the Alfred Bauer Prize and the FIPRESCI international critics award also at the 2012 Berlinale.
