Gurus o’ Gold Post-Venice/Telluride/Toronto

We tried something a little different this week. First, we picked our Top 8, without ranking them. Then, we picked out Next 7, also without ranking them. The idea was to create some degree of hierarchy without beating the rankings to death this early in the award season.

We’ll be back one more time in early October before starting our weekly voting in early November.

  1. Danny says:

How does “Captain Phillips” wind up on Wloszczyna’s 1-8 and 9-15 list?

  2. Butty says:

Is there some legal obligation to call “The Butler” “Lee Daniels’ The Butler”? I know TWC have to but surely the rest of us can call it what it is. It’s not as if it needs disambiguating.

  3. Butty says:

I’m glad that Wikipedia and IMDB agree with me on this one.

  4. Henry R. Schrader says:

Too many votes for THE BUTLER and BANKS; too few votes for BEFORE MIDNIGHT.

  5. Ray Pride says:

The standard choice is whatever appears on screen as the title card, as in IRON MAN THREE. Sadly, then, it would be LEE DANIELS’ THE BUTLER. (But where do you put the snappy blue underline that Daniels added onscreen?)
One of the eminent virtues of years of successive annual Maltin Guides is its adherence to that policy.

  6. david says:

No love for ‘short term 12’?

  7. pj says:

Don’t get the Banks or Phillips love.

  8. Henry R. Schrader says:

You don’t get the Phillips love? Have a peek at the reviews http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/captain_phillips/reviews/

  9. Sam E. says:

Seems about right maybe Foxoatcher or Monument Men pick up more steam.

  10. lola says:

The Counselor should have received at least one vote -_-
