Gurus o’ Gold: What If…
This week, the Gurus consider their usual Best Picture list, but then a couple of categories that don’t really exist. First, Best Screenplay, without a distinction between Original and Adapted. Then, a proposed category (which not all the Gurus agree should be created) for Best Casting of A Motion Picture.

I find it interesting in the two latter questions how high Inside Llewyn Davis is. Yet in the prediction for Best Picture it’s at #5 overall. I still believe this nabs quite a few noms including Picture, Director, Screenplay and possibly supporting actor among some other tech ones.
I have a feeling “August: Osage County” is going to do very much better than the Gurus are ranking it.
I think Wolf will be a major contender. Can’t WAIT
I highly respect casting directors, but the notion that they deserve a category is bogus. It would dilute the importance of not just an actor delivering a performance (all they had to do was show up because the casting director got their number) but also a director helping elicit performance (all s/he had to do was call action and cut because the actor showed up because the casting director got their number).
What next? Voice coaches?
If the SAG wants to include mention of the casting director in the ensemble category, that’s as good as it should gets. Or if the casting directors’ guild (is there such a thing) want to present their own award, good for them. I doubt anyone is going to begrudge them that.
I agree with The Pope. An award for Best Casting Director would be too easily confused with the SAG Ensemble award. I don’t trust the full Academy to understand the job of the Casting Director. CDs should give out their own award each year, voted on solely by them, to someone who’s made a significant contribution in their industry. That’s my compromise.
