    > James Gandolfini, Enough Said

  2. Daniella Isaacs says:

I’m not hearing ANYBODY talk about CAPTAIN PHILLIPS’ award chances anymore, except in the most perfunctory way: “…yeah, and CAPTAIN PHILLIPS” full stop. I know it’s been out a while, but so have ENOUGH SAID, PRISONERS, and GRAVITY, and people are still discussing them passionately in awards conversations, as hopes being held in the first two cases, and for its historical significance in the last case. Could it be that PHILLIPS peaked too soon? I won’t be at all surprised if it is the “jaw-dropping” omission in many categories come Oscar nomination day.

  3. Sam says:

Daniella, I feel that way too. Even at the top of Captain Phillips’ buzz, it still didn’t feel fervent enough to be anything more than the 4th or 5th nominee. It just doesn’t seem like it has any champions, only the universal presumption that it’ll be in there somewhere.

  4. Helen says:

American Hustle is a horrible movie. Blue Jasmine is the best of the Year the award for best actress must goes to Cate Blanchett or Judi Dench.

  5. The Pope says:

    @ Helen.
I have not seen American Hustle, so I have no wish to challenge your opinion. I do however wish to what you mean by horrible. Do you mean it is a bad film?

For me, a horrible film could be that the people in the film are horrible and the subject matter is horrible but the film manages to detach itself from that and observes the horribleness of the people, their behavior and the events.

By that margin, Raging Bull, Goodfellas and Casino are horrible films…. but all brilliant films.

  6. movielocke says:

American Hustle is a brilliant movie-movie, Billy Wilder come again, Russell’s best film.

art-tastic pimps, whoring out their micro-focused ultra-niche product, will probably reflexively hate it, like they mindlessly hate anything with the scent of populist on it. Which is a shame because it’s a damn smart film about identity, success, the divide of private and public and explores all of that in a myriad of textual and subtextual ways. Not that the pimps would notice, they’re too busy flinging poo to actually use their brains and think beyond the extremely narrow confines of their limited spheres of interest.

  7. Jermsguy says:

Sometimes I resent the change to allow up to ten Best Picture nominees. The Butler was fine, but does anyone seriously think it was the best picture of the year?

  8. SaraK says:

what about the shots for actresses in the foreign language films ? like Pauline GARCIA in “Gloria”, Zhange Ziyi in “the Grandmaster” and Adele & Lea in “BLUE is the warmest color” ?

  9. movielocke says:

shh, Sara, Blue is the warmest Color is under strict orders of ‘repress repress repress!’ amongst all journalists. They daren’t speak it’s name, for it is on the blackest of black lists.

  10. movielocke says:

Now that the race changed yesterday, the easy digestibility and academy-friendliness of Mandela long walk to freedom means it is suddenly a frontrunner. and since I didn’t do real predictions last time, here are some.

    Best Picture
    1. 12 Years a Slave
    2. American Hustle
    3. Gravity
    4. Saving Mr. Banks
    5. Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom
    6. Inside Llewyn Davis
    7. The Wolf of Wall Street
    8. The Dallas Buyers Club
    9. Blue Jasmine
    10. Blue is the Warmest Color
    11. Her

    – The butler got pushed out by Mandela’s surge, I think Captain Philips has utterly faded and I feel like either Blue Jasmine or Nebraska gets the ninth and final slot, but I think Woody Allen is more popular with the academy than Alexander Payne. Since critics are shying away from the year’s masterpiece, I expect American Hustle will thread the needle and win in the end.

    Best Actor
    1. Chiwetel Ejiofor
    2. Idris Elba
    3. Matthew McConaughey
    4. Robert Redford
    5. Christian Bale
    6. Oscar Issac
    7. Tom Hanks
    8. Leonardo DiCaprio

    – I had Redford down with Tom Hanks as having faded and lost all momentum in the season, but perhaps he will remain relevant. Since critics will be cowardly and not give 12 Years a Slave the support it needs, I no longer think Ejiofor will win, but at this point he’s still number one.

    Best Actress:
    1. Cate Blanchett
    2. Sandra Bullock
    3. Adele Exarchopoulos
    4. Amy Adams
    5. Emma Thompson
    6. Judi Dench
    7. Meryl Streep
    8. Naomie Harris

I feel like Naomie Harris could sneak into this race, but like Lea Sedoux, she’ll slip comfortably into the supporting actress race in some category fraud.

    Best Supporting Actor
    1. Jared Leto
    2. Michael Fassbender
    3. Bradley Cooper
    4. Daniel Bruhl
    5. Jeremy Renner (American Hustle)
    6. Tom Hanks
    7. Jonah Hill
    8. James Gandolfini

Perhaps Daniel Bruhl has faded, but that was such a stunning and terrific supporting performance in a surprisingly excellent film. I know the academy will watch Rush, so I hope he pulls out a Tommy Lee Jones in the Valley of Elah surpise here. As for Tom Hanks, I just cannot get over how terribly off his voice is. That is not Walt Disney. that’s not even a close approximation, it’s the equivalent of Meryl Streep doing an Eliza Doolittle impersonation for Julia Child instead of doing Julia Child’s voice. Just awful, I can’t imagine the academy, who all heard Disney on television daily while growing up, will accept such a piss poor approximation. Jeremey Renner plays the straight man to four bombastically-massive, scenery-chewing performances and completely holds his own, projecting a quiet charisma and utterly believable politician, it might be his best performance, I wish people would notice it, but people rarely notice the straight man.

    1. Lupita Nyong’o
    2. Naomie Harris
    3. Jennifer Lawrence
    4. June Squibb
    5. Lea Seydoux
    6. Octavia Spencer
    7. Sally Hawkins
    8. Oprah Winfrey

Octavis spencer sadly gets pushed out by Naomie Harris. Lawrence could win this, especially with the coming lack of critical support for 12 Years a Slave.

    Best Director:
    1. Steve McQueen
    2. Alfonso Cuaron
    3. David Russell
    4. Justin Chadwick
    5. Abdellatif Kechiche
    6. Joel and Ethan Coen
    7. Martin Scorsese
    8. John Lee Hancock

I think the 100ish directors in the directors branch will all see Blue is the Warmest Color–and Spielberg will be lobbying for it, amongst others–and we’ll have the very surprising result we saw last year of Kechiche in the place Zeitlin managed. The Coens are perhaps more likely than Chadwick, but I think they’re the victims of the Mandela surge.
