The Weekend Report

Halloween said si to Ouija as the spooky yarn edged out newcomer Nightcrawler for top spot at the box office. Respective estimates were $10.9 million and $10.7 million. The session’s other wide release, chiller Before I Go to Sleep, grossed a disappointing $1.9 million.

Holiday-timed retreads of Saw and The Nightmare Before Christmas also failed. In the niches,  Horns failed to spike with a $107,000 tally at 96 venues.

In Canada, Cannes-prized Maps to the Stars was off the chart with $78,500 at 49 locations and Ceci n’est pas un polar eked out $18,300 from 17 screens. Incoming exclusives failed to register save for two-screen preem of Jean-Luc Godard’s 3D puzzler Goodbye to Language, at $25,200.

While hardly the Super Bowl, Halloween night traditionally takes a bite out of moviegoing and it’s particularly noticeable when the holiday falls on a weekend. Session grosses that were shy of $100 million attest to the fact and translated into an 18% decline from the prior weekend. It was a steeper 24% drop from 2013 when the bow of Ender’s Game led with a $27 million launch.

Pundits were unanimous in pegging Nightcrawler, the creepy tale of a freelance tabloid purveyor of shmutz, as the weekend champ with estimates of $13 million to $15 million. Generally positive reviews appeared to bolster its prospects but its potential audience appeared to prefer viewing sleaze at home and without undue editorial commentary.

The weekend slump  puts a crimp in recent post-Labor Day holiday momentum with the year to date lagging behind 2013 by 3.5%.

As with Christmas distributors are hoping to widen the Thanksgiving holiday period with highly anticipated releases of Interstellar and Big Hero 6 next week. That gives those pictures a two week lead on The Hunger Games finale that many are already anticipating as the biggest box-office grosser of the year.
