  1. EtGuild2 says:

GONE GIRL is the first R-Rated movie to spend 8 weeks in the Top 5 this century. Specifically, since THE GREEN MILE in 1999. Overall, it’s only the 2nd live action movie since AVATAR to accomplish the feat (the first HUNGER GAMES being the other).

  2. dinovelvet says:

I assume that John Wick number is incorrect, as it would be several spots higher if it really did make 2.3 mil this weekend. Anyway I guess it will top out at $43 mil-ish? That’s not bad for a no-nonsense R rated action movie these days, I guess, esp. it it only cost $20 mil to make. Would prefer it to hit 50 just to show the powers that be that there’s still life in the genre…

  3. Geoff says:

Wow Etguild, I would not have thought that……neither the Passion of the Christ nor The Hangover couldn’t pull off that feat? Still very impressive – Gone Girl is definitely looking like a surefire Best Picture nominee now.

And Dino yeah, John Wick is probably going to make a bit of profit which is not bad….but I think the bigger take-away is that Keanu Reeves is going to get reconsidered for big roles now, just based on how well he pulled off the physicality of that role. I can definitely see him getting a role (probably a villain) in one of the new DC movies coming out.

The press has not been kind but it looks like Interstellar is going to end up with a worldwide haul close to Mission Impossible 4 or Gravity (between $650 million and $700 million – seriously, the legs in China and South Korea have been REALLY strong and with Mockingjay getting bumped to 2015, it has a lot more breathing room in those markets), which is pretty damn good.

  4. Gustavo says:

I’m sad for The Homesman. It deserves to be seen by movie lovers.

But, alas, as Clint would say in Unforgiven, “deserve’s got nothing to do with it”.

  5. movieman says:

    Gee, Geoff.
I’d like to think Keanu would set his sights a tad higher than mere comic book movies.
Interesting films by interesting directors would be OK with me.

Of course, we seem to be living in an era where public perception is that an actor (or actress) hasn’t truly “made it” if they haven’t toplined a comic book movie.
Why else would Michael B. Jordan and Miles Teller be segueing from the thesping heights of “Fruitvale Station” and “Whiplash” to a (snooze) “Fantastic Four” reboot?
(No “Awkward Moment” jokes, please, lol.)

  6. Bulldog68 says:

Re Michael B Jordan and many other stars that opt to do comic book movies, its always a case of remaining marketable. The only way some of these smaller more artsy projects get attention is when a big star is attached.

  7. EtGuild2 says:

No Geoff, those movies fell short and I was also surprised. But then again it’s already closing in on DJANGO among big recent “adult” movies, without a nomination.

  8. Geoff says:

Ok Movieman you got me….I am guilty of this absurd overemphasis on every major acting talent HAVING to land that comic book role. I mean wow you hear interviews nowadays with actors like Jessica Chastain, Jared Leto, and even Al Pacino (funny about him though – he actually was OSCAR NOMINATED for a comic book role more than 20 years ago with Dick Tracy, did HE actually forget??) lobbying to get a role in a comic book movie…..it’s gotten completely out of hand for sure. Seriously as much as I enjoyed Amazing Spiderman 2 (more than most apparently) it was sad to see Paul Giamatti slum it with that Rhino cameo. So you are completely right, comic book movies are the current fad and it should not take a role in one to grab attention from the movie geeks. That said, we are talking about Keanu Reeves…..

Look I’ll admit the dude has always had talent but movies like My Own Private Idaho and River’s Edge were over 20 years ago…..and you look at his recent roles: 47 Ronin was a big budget kung fu fantasy, he actually directed Man of Thai Chi another actioner, and I don’t think it’s incidental that no film he has been featured in over the past ten years has gotten the kind of critical raves that John Wick has…..THIS is his wheelhouse, he’s an action man! You look at his biggest successes – The Matrix, Speed – he was perfect for these roles based on physicality and having just the right amount of vacancy in his eyes and demeanor to buy that this guy was into the action.

So for him specifically, I have little doubt that he would jump on a role in a comic book film – you have to accept your own limitations and I get the sense that at 50 (but still in really good shape, looking 20 years younger no less), he is pretty well aware of his and would likely jump to take a role in a comic book film.

I mean seriously, would even the most ardent cinephile find Keanu a better fit to play say Captain Cold in the upcoming Flash movie or a dialogue-heavy character part in the next PT Anderson film? And that’s nothing to sneeze at – the guy’s had a career as Johnny Utah, Neo, Bill S. Preston, Jack Traven, and now John Wick….which is more than 99.9% of the rest of us.

  9. That Guy says:

Keanu Reeves wanted to be cast as Wolverine in the first X-Men film. He’s a comic fan.

He also tried to get the role of Strider in Lord of the Rings but was turned down for that as well.

Ironic that he became a geek icon in the Matrix films instead.

  10. Stella's Boy says:

Reeves has done some solid work outside of the action genre. I really like him in stuff like The Gift, Thumbsucker, Feeling Minnesota, Something’s Gotta Give, and even The Lake House, corny as that one is. Yes he’s done well in action flicks, but it would be a shame if he limited himself to the genre.

  11. doug r says:

You guys know that Constantine is DC, right?

  12. movieman says:

…and Oscar Isaac just signed onto “X Men VIII” (or whatever # we’re up to at this point).

“Oscar, you’ve just headlined a Coen Bros. movie and ‘A Most Violent Year’ w/ Jessica Chastain. Where do you go from here?”

“I’m gonna be a Marvel Comics bad guy! Whoopee!!!”

  13. Christian says:

Keanu is also funny. He got pretty famous from a comedy. He also directed SIDE BY SIDE which I thought was utterly fascinating and well-presented. He’s a smart guy who wants to be seen that way.

  14. Bulldog68 says:

@Movieman, I don’t know why it is that because you’ve worked with critically acclaimed directors and critically acclaimed movies that you’re just supposed to shut off that part of your career that allows you to have some wish fulfillment.

We all use to play cowboys and Indians or some variation of that growing up. Here you get to do it with a $200m budget and some pretty cool toys. Let the man have some fun will ya. Sheesh.

  15. movieman says:

Bulldog- I’m not a grinch who wants to deny actors a little bit of fun in their day jobs.
I’m mostly commenting on the fucked-up culture we live in where actors (even the very best of them) aren’t considered truly “successful” unless they’ve sold their soul to the devil by signing up for a Marvel, D.C., et al franchise.
It depresses me. But so do most Marvel, D.C., etc. tentpoles.

  16. Monco says:

Oscar Isaac was kind of a comic bad guy in Sucker Punch.

  17. Bulldog68 says:

No worries Movieman. I just know that if I was an actor I’d try to mix it up as much as possible, and there’s nothing you can do about what people consider success. It’s not always money. Kidman is considered a “successful” actress, but is still viewed as box office poison.

Downey was considered a successful actor, albeit with issues before Iron Man, and now he’s considered a draw because of that “dreaded Marvel sellout.”

And what was Streep doing in The Giver?

Everyone wants to play the hero, be it real life like a Martin Luther King or JFK, or fake like Batman or Iron Man. Marvel at least does not depress me as much as Transformers, which in my mind is not even trying. Avengers was better than it needed to be, granted I’m more a Dark Knight man, but it was entertaining fluff, and once in a while, when they populate it with good actors, instead of the Playboy of the Week, it’s immensely more watchable.

  18. Bulldog68 says:

And more bad news for Movieman, Oscar Isaac is in the next Star Wars.

  19. movieman says:

And what was Streep doing in The Giver?

…or Patricia Clarkson in “The Maze Runner;” Julianne Moore, PS Hoffman and Jeffrey Wright in “Hunger Games;” etc., etc.
Everybody wants to be in the comic book/franchise/tentpole biz these days, probably because that’s pretty much all H’wood makes these days, and you can’t live on indie movie salaries, I suppose.
Which doesn’t make it any less depressing–but I’m depressed a lot these days.

  20. Joe Leydon says:

And in the ’60s, everybody wanted to be in a spy movie.

  21. cadavra says:

And in the ’50s, everybody wanted to be in westerns. Sooner or later, this cycle will burn out, too.

Speaking of westerns, THE HOMESMAN is a total knockout. A shame nobody’s going to see it.

  22. EtGuild2 says:

This thread seems to be channeling BIRDMAN.
