The Weekend Report
Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation handily vanquished the opposition with an estimated opening salvo of $55.6 million. Vacation, the session’s other wide release, trailed in second place with $14.7 million.
Exclusive newcomers included two docs that drew well. The Buckley-Vidal match up Best of Enemies grossed $60,500 at five theaters while the solo rumination Listen to Me Marlon (Brando) netted $27,000 from two playdates. However the big noise was the true life flashback The End of the Tour with a $122,000 box office from four screens. Mr. Holmes continued its slow rollout, holding well with a current deduction of $2.3 million.
In the niches, new Indian movies saw a strong bow of $312,000 for Punjabi Angrej and an OK start for Hindi Drishyam of $249,000. Nonfiction A Lego Brickumentary proved unconstructive with $40,100 at 94 venues.
Revenues for the frame were just shy of $150 million for a 3% rollback from the immediate prior weekend. It also took a 23% dive from 2014 when the debut of Guardians of the Galaxy exploded with $94.3 million and newcomer Get On Up was not so hard working with $13.6 million.
Tracking anticipated about a $50 million opening for the fifth incarnation of the big screen Mission: Impossible. Since its stewardship with Bad Robot the franchise has acquired new vigor with the current incarnation receiving some of its best reviews. The opening weekend crowd was 62% male with a rather surprising 81% aged 25-years and older. It could prove a fast burn if it doesn’t expand its audience in the coming weeks.
Rogue Nation opened day-and-date in 40 foreign climes to an estimated $65 million. Among the top territory revenue generators were South Korea with $17.1 million, UK grossing $8.7 million and $5.1 million in Mexico.
An even older retread Vacation (sans National Lampoon) has been AWOL since 1997. Its reboot jumps forward with the now adult Griswold son Rusty taking the reins. Early tracking suggested an opening weekend of about $20 million. The film skewed female at 53% and was 64% aged 25-years plus that indicates it’s not quite finding a new generation of viewers.
