The Weekend Report
Straight Outta Compton readily retained bragging rights atop the weekend chart with an estimated $26.7 million. That tally helped push Universal to a 2015 gross of more than $2.1 billion, smashing the benchmark set in 2009 by Warner… and that still leaves four months and seven releases to come for the distrib.
The flipside is that we have entered the period where distribs release “disappointments” to quietly play out the season. Three new films ho-hummed into the fray. Leading the pack in third position was Sinister 2 with $10.6 million followed by Hitman: Agent 47 knocking off $8.1 million and American Ultra blowing smoke at $5.5 million.
In the niches, new Indian imports included Telugu Kick 2 with an okay $232,000 and a dull $76,900 for Hindi All is Well. The Love Affair from the Philippines had a robust start of $677,000. Exclusive debuts were generally dull save for Learning to Drive with $69,200 and Grandma grossing $127,000 from four engagements.
Session revenues slipped to about $108 million, a 28% dip from seven days ago. It was 6% down from the comparable 2014 frame when the fourth weekend of Guardians of the Galaxy led with $17.2 million and memorable newcomers included If I Stay grossing $15.7 million and When the Game Stands Tall with $8.4 million.
The Blumhouse was off the rose of Sinister 2, the followup to 2012’s Sinister . Apart from title similarities the new —an Amityville-like spookshow—hsares little from its inspiration. Opening weekend exit demos were 51% female and 57% aged 25-years and younger.
Hitman: Agent 47 also has antecedents in past glories. But 2007’s Agent 47 Timothy Olyphant moved on for “Justifiable” reasons. Studio exit demos indicated an audience that was 61% male with 60% aged 25-years and older. The film also opened in 20 international territories and rustled up a comparable estimated $8.5 million box office.
American Ultra viewers were 56% male with 65% aged 25-years and older.
The frame also featured expansions of The End of the Tour, Mistress America and The Diary of a Teenage Girl with Mistress America holding up best of the trio.
Despite a summer of a lot of highs, lows and in-betweens, 2015 is on track for record returns thanks to a range of disproportionate successes.
