Huh?
Some decent indie numbers this week! Good debut for SECOND MOTHER, okay for QUEEN OF EARTH, very good expansions for LEARNING TO DRIVE, GRANDMA and MISTRESS AMERICA. Seems like odd timing given the number that dropped dead this summer.
Universal has now spent as many weeks at number 1 this year as Warner Bros, Fox, Paramount, Sony, and Lionsgate combined. Yeah, number 1 is pretty meaningless, but it’s alarming that Uni and Disney have taken the top slot in 18 of the past 22 frames.
“Queen” was undoubtedly hobbled by the fact that it’s available as a VOD. Those NYC numbers would have surely been higher otherwise.
You think that’s a healthy expansion for “Mistress America,” Et?
I–and most definitely FS–was kind of hoping for more.
Yeah, agreed about Mistress America. FS has this kind of expansion down to a science and less than $3k at 150 screens is not what a success looks like to them. It’ll get to ~240 screens before it sees a percentage drop and then that’s that.
Considering this was one of the worst weekends of the decade at the box office…yeah. I think it’s a good number in a difficult environment.
Worldwide, it looks like MINIONS could crack $1.1 billion and the TOP 10 all-time, which means 4 of the top 10 worldwide movies ever were released in 2015, with SW and SPECTRE still to come. Insane.
MI5 and INSIDE OUT still chugging along nicely internationally as well as domestically. I questioned whether $500 million would be worthwhile to keep Cruise’s franchise alive, but $600 million looks quite possible
Not surprising that MINIONS would be so big overseas, given that much of the dialogue is in, well, Minion. Universal probably saved a small fortune in dubbing costs as well.
I don’t know why anyone would think MISTRESS AMERICA could break out. Baumbach is very much a niche filmmaker, and his idea of comedy doesn’t travel well beyond big-city hipsters.
I found the whole Mistress America thing pretty baffling. It just didn’t feel complete, or nearly as complex as his other work. Who is this movie for other than fans of Frances Ha? It feels like a b-side to me.
EtG – most astonishing thing from this weekend, by far if you ask me, is Jurassic World looking to take #2 domestic from Titanic, even when its re-release is factored in. Yes, ticket prices, but good lord. How, how how how how ho h
World’s resurgence is due to the one week IMAX run which it loses in favor of Transporter Refueled next weekend, it doesn’t hit home video until October 20th, so there’s still a chance by the time it hits bluray/dvd it’ll top Titanic’s reissue but it will be close
Sad to see WE ARE YOUR FRIENDS fail so miserably, Every character in the ENTOURAGE movie knew Emily Ratajkowski by name but I guess she isn’t a draw whatsoever. It will probably never find an audience. By the time it starts airing at 3am on HBO Zone next April, the EDM theme, which probably seemed like a good idea to the old people who greenlit it, will make it appear insanely dated. At least Zac Efron will always have NEIGHBORS 2, next summer’s “why did it gross so much less than the first one?” movie.
Yeah I think JW is going to fall just short.
BTW..for those saying TERMINATOR has been salvaged as a franchise by China. No. Even if it grossed $200 million in China (its at $83 million), it still probably wouldn’t be enough to be profitable.
With all the impressive numbers that JW has put up, there is still one record for 2015 that it can’t claim, biggest overseas total, which Furious 7 has at $1.1b. F7 was only the third movie to achieve that feat. And when you look at all the ink and bytes that have been committed to reporting JW’s figures, that overseas total for F7 is astronomical.
So just last year or so when Fox expressed the idea of buying WB I thought that it was absolutely crazy, but given this year plus the volitity of the media stocks (and the fact that one out of two tickets has been split between Disney and Universal this year), it doesn’t seem sooooo far fetched.
I agree with the consensus that Pan looks awful and I fully expect black mass to run out of steam in the mid sixties and be forgotten around awards time. When was the last time a studio had as much riding on a film like they have on batman vs superman? Don’t they have about a billion dollars earmarked (with about a third of that already spent) planning on this thing being monsterously huge? If it whiffs its not just another undperformer, it half their business model for the next half decade.
Hcat, the last two movies starring Superman and Batman grossed a combined $1.8 billion and that was with mixed reviews/fanboy reactions, I think they’ll be fine – besides, they still have more films on the docket from Harry Potter’s Wizarding World and Legoland.
Really enjoyed “We Are Your Friends.”
Its complete and total wipeout is kind of surprising, definitely depressing.
Was it the title? The marketing? The release date?
Hopefully it will find a more receptive audience on home video. Unless that “Worst Wide Release Opening Ever For a Studio Movie!” tag sticks to it like glue and people conflate b.o. ignominy with quality. Which, sadly, most folks tend to do.
Even more stunning was the sub-disastrous expansion of Sony Classics’ “Diary of a Teenage Girl.”
A $520 PSA on 795 screens? Words fail me.
Two terrific movies that literally nobody went to see.
“We Are Your Friends”? Most of the target audience is back at school/college already.
“The Diary of a Teenage Girl”? It received the Peter Travers Seal of Approval.
That’s all you need to know.

oh goody, more lego and superheroes and superheroes fighting each other and tired sequels and bad remakes, a beancounters paradise — where’s this year’s ‘live. rinse. repeat’ anything with a semblance of freshness and originality, well-written and clever, engaging of more than cuatro brain cells while it thrills and entertains. where’s rita vrataski, needs more rita
Leah: Among the major releases Mad Max was a sequel but was certainly not tired. More than a semblance of freshness and actually breathed new life into the franchise.
Straight Outta Compton also delivered for me. Good performance all around with a script that had the right mix of social commentary, humour and history. Music was awesome. Long shot but I hope Jason Mitchell as Eazy-E gets a nom.
Inside Out was original and refreshing even though I wasn’t as strong on it as many others.
Kingsman was just batshit crazy over the top funny and hilarious and a good time.
i meant more original action/sci-fi/thrillers re above bulldog, not dramas/movies in general, but why not, same applies. yeah fury road’s super daring and fucked up (in the best way), one’s not enough though really for the year. (ETA weirdly ‘spy’ is one of the best action flicks this year, but i consider it a comedy so in a different category)
(i don’t count animated kids/family movies, which in a bizarro world twist mainstream animated family movies are often far more original, unique and daring in general than their live-action counterparts. inside out’s great)
