  1. Miles Ridding says:

Both Soairse Ronan in Brooklyn and, especially, Cate Blanchett in Carol are better than Brie Larson in Room. The politics accompanying awards is such a spoiler. If Blanchett hadn’t won 2 Oscars already and one of these only recently, there would be no question that she would win for Carol. But no, now we have to prepare ourselves for a new young thing taking top awards for a good, but not great performance. In truth the boy carries Room. I just hope the critics have the sense to award the best and not the flavour of the moment!

  2. Steve Y. says:

Agree with Miles. If she hadn’t won for Blue Jasmine, Cate Blanchett would have Best Actress in the bag. She is sublime in Carol, far surpassing anything Brie Larson does in Room.

  3. Greg says:

I completely agree with the above comments. Cate Blanchett is exquisite in Carol.

In my opinion, Joan Allen is the best thing in Room.

  4. Quentin says:

The title is “The Hateful Eight”–not H8ful Eight or Hateful 8.

  5. marcus says:

Larson gave a stunning, lived in performance that would be getting praise across the board here if she didn’t just happen to be the frontrunner standing in the way of peoples’ personal faves.

For a performance from a tiny film, from a distributor that has never even landed a single nomination, to have established itself like this, with no pre-packaged hype, is pretty extraordinary.

  6. DougW says:

The wild card in all this is whether Rooney Mara and/or Alicia Vikander will be moved to the Best Actress category by the Academy voters.
