The Weekend Report

There was nothing alien about America’s most popular movies as The Martian stayed on red ground with an estimated $11.5 million.

It was the lowest grossing weekend for 2015 movies. Burnt was crispest of the brunch with $5 million in fifth place. The political follies of Our Brand is Crisis begged for a recall with $3.4 million and Scout’s Guide to the Zombie Apocalype was (un)dead at $1.7 million.

Exclusive newcomers provided a couple of bright spots including stereoerotic Love with $29,600 at two dimensions and potent testimony of $198,000 for China’s The Witness at 40 sites. Slow rollouts for Room and Suffragette maintained initial momentum.

Weekend revenues struggled to about $70 million and a 33% plunge from seven days earlier. It was also 26% off the 2014 session when the second weekend of Ouija edged out the debut of Nightcrawler by $300,000 with a $10.7 million gross. Domestic revenues for the year passed $9 billion on Sunday about two weeks ahead of last year and 2015 is currently a bit more than 4% ahead on the prior year’s pace.

Expectations were admittedly low for the trio of new releases with none posing a threat to the likes of Martian, Goosebumps or Bridge of Spies. Nonetheless industry tracking indicated debuts for the freshmen would be 60% to 80% better. The new crop faced strong competition against the World Series and trick or treating. Studio exit polls had Crisis tilting 56% female and Zombie Apocalypse 55% male. The former had an audience that was 84% aged 35 years old and older while the younger trender was 61% aged 25 years and above.
