The Weekend Report

Jason Bourne easily led the field with an estimated $60 million debut. Also strong among national debs was the raucous comedy Bad Moms that slotted third with $23.3 million while the social media thriller Nerve opened to a more modest $8.9 million.

Activity among exclusive launches was also fierce with the top performers emerging as the Philip Roth adaptation Indignation at $83,600 at four venues and the financial thriller Equity grossing $76,200 also on four screens.

In the niches Indian imports put on a full court press with three solid debuts. The Hindi Dishoom grossed $417,000; Punjabi Bambukat opened with $297,000; and the Telugu Pelli Chupulu took $228,000.

The second weekend of Don’t Think Twice added four sets and maintained a hearty $33,240 per-location average. Café Society went wide-ish with an effective $2.3 million.

Overall revenues for the session generated about $190 million for a slight 6% decline from last weekend. It was a 30% improvement from 2015 when Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation opened to $55.5 followed by Vacation, with $14.7 million.

Jason Bourne has evolved as America’s James Bond (though past efforts to find a replacement actor were less organic) with a combination of contemporary socio-political issues, superlative action set pieces and a tortured protagonist. Tracking suggested a high end debut of $55 million that it quickly surpassed. Critical response and strong w-o-m is likely to translate into a strong multiple and its effective ambiguous end virtually demands further installments.

On the domestic side, Bourne skewed 55% male with 76% of the audience aged 25-years and older. The core 17-34 year old corridor comprised 32% of ticket buyers.

The film opened day-and-date in 46 international markets to an estimated $50 million. Its top territory was Korea with $11 million with the UK close behind at $10 million. It bowed top of the chart in 27 markets.

Bad Moms proved to be the weekend surprise as it smashed expectations of $16 million to $18 million. The tale of errant housewives hit a nerve with its target crowd and may cast a wider net in the coming weeks. The opening weekend audience was 82% female with 48% aged 34-years and older.

Moms also dipped its toe in 12 international waters to an estimated $1.4 million including a $325,000 bow in Spain.

Nerve got a head start on the weekend with a Wednesday launch that provided a $6 million two-day tally. It also drew majority female viewers gauged at 63% with 78% aged 25-years and younger.
