The Weekend Report

Don’t Breathe became the air apparent as it scared up an opening estimate of $25.9 million. The session’s other new national debut was the actioner Mechanic: Resurrection that ranked fifth with a $7.3 million tally. Additionally two films got a limited wide launch. The pre-political romance Southside With You inaugurated with modest approval of $2.8 million while Hands of Stone — the fictionalized early years of boxing champion Roberto Duran — bowed to a low blow of $1.7 million. Greater, a fact-based college football drama, fumbled with $640,000 at 434 stadia.

Hell or High Water expanded further and maintained solid averages. There was also an effective slow rollout for A Tale of Love and Darkness. Best of the exclusives was the family dramedy The Hollars with box office of $43,300 from four gatherings.

In the niches, the only Indian import to register a pulse (albeit faint) was the tongue-in-cheek superhero yarn A Flying Jatt, with a $96,400 gross. Chinese imports included Tunnel, with an okay $167,000 and Time Raiders with a tepid $86,700.

With a chunk of youth back in school, the traditional late-summer slump set in, with grosses for the frame barely better than $100 million. Box office ebbed 13% from the prior weekend but was ahead of 2015 by 35%. Twelve months back, the $13.1 million third weekend gross of Straight Outta Compton led with newcomer War Room in second with $11.3 million.

Domestic box office is poised to surpass $8 billion on Wednesday. The current year is running at a 4% faster pace than 2015.

Modestly-budgeted chiller Don’t Breathe was easily tracking ahead of the pack with expectations of a debut of $21 milion or $22 million. Strong critical response and solid word-of-mouth provided a box office boost. The film had a slight male tilt of 53% with 52% of the audience aged 25-years and younger.

The appeared to be limited interest in “Resurrecting” the modestly successful 2011 The Mechanic. Nonetheless, the film hit its core audience with numbers that reflected tracking expectations. It also tilted slightly male at 51% but with 78% of its audience aged 25-years and older.
