The Weekend Report

The Magnificent Seven prevailed as top choice in the marketplace with an estimated $34.8 million. The frame’s other national opener, the animated Storks, took second with $21.4 million.

Limited and exclusive bows featured a toe-dipper for the African-set drama Queen of Katwe of $303,000 prior to next week’s national launch. The delayed release of Australia’s The Dressmaker arrived to a positive $183,000  at 36 shops. Its international gross has been around $23 million since its Down Under bow in November 2015.

In the niches the only Indian import to register a pulse was the Telugu Majnu that bowed in 114 venues with $353,000. The Filipino Barcelona: A Love Untold opened to a potent $434,000 following a record breaking debut on home turf. South Korea’s Oscar submission The Age of Shadows had a solid start of $147,000 from 41 screens and in Quebec the critically lauded local entry Juste la fin du monde (It’s Not the End of the World) grossed an OK $169,000.

Revenues for the frame generated about $105 million for a 15% uptick for last weekend. It was 26% diminished from 2015 when the debuts of Hotel Transylvania 2 and The Intern led with respective openings of $48.5 million and $17.7 million.

As the age of the avid moviegoer matures, the appeal of the western ought to improve and industry trackers were initially confident that The Magnificent Seven would debut to $40 million plus. However, that estimate got pared back in the days leading up to its release and mixed critical reviews may have damped down expectations. Studio exit demos identified the opening crowd as 56% male with 67% aged 25-years and older.

Expectations were also higher than actuality for Storks that was initially anticipated to gross about $30 million first weekend. Targeted to families with young children it has that sector to itself for the next month. The audience was 60% female with 51% of viewers aged 25-years and older.
