The Weekend Report
Never underestimate a woman scorned. Boo! A Madea Halloween maintained the top spot in the marketplace for a second weekend with an estimated $16.8 million. It scared the sole weekend national newcomer (and once-presumed champ) Inferno that settled for poor seconds of $14.9 million.
The only exclusive to find a beat was Gimme Danger, Jim Jarmusch’s documentary on Iggy Pop and the Stooges. Expansions included a 32-screen glow for Moonlight, to potent result.
In the niches, the Diwali holidays brought a brace of Indian imports, including Hindi Ae Dil Hai Mushkil that bowed with an impressive $2.1 million. Also off to good starts were Telugu Kaashmora and Hindi Shivaay with $341,000 and $327,000,respectively, while Tamil Kodi was a disappointment. In India, ADHM and Shivaay are each expected to open at around $6 million. China’s Mr. Donkey grossed $82,400 from 20 screens and $9 million on home turf.
Revenues for the frame dipped 31% to just shy of $90 million. It was nonetheless a 19% improvement from 2015 when the fifth weekend of The Martian led with $11.7 million. Moviegoing tends to dip around Halloween and this year has been affected by the presidential campaign which provided more plot twists and surprises than any film, series or sport.
Inferno ranks as a casualty of timing having grossed $100 million-plus following two weeks in international distribution where a marquee name still has heft. Its $13 million debut in China this weekend almost exceeded domestic results.
While Inferno tracked soft, it still appeared to be heading toward a low to mid-$20 million launch that made it a winner by default. Thursday previews and Friday matinees then suggested lower returns and its ever so slight Friday to Saturday bump sealed the deal. Studio exit demos identified the audience as 55% male with 67% 25 and older.
While rain sprinkled on SoCal, distant thunder came from overseas engagements of Doctor Strange, generating an estimated $86 million prior to next weekend’s launches domestically and in China. Top initial markets were South Korea with $18 million and $11 million in the homeland of Benedict Cumberbatch.
