The Weekend Report
Doctor Strange continued to cast his spell on the world with the top spot in the domestic arena estimated at $43.4 million. The session saw three new national releases with the alien Arrival in position three with $24.1 million and right behind the urban family comedy Almost Christmas grossing $15.5 million. Haunted house thriller Shut In had a much fainter pulse of $3.7 million.
Among exclusives, France’s Oscar foreign-language submission Elle bowed with an impressive $54,500 from two screens. But the big noise was the $119,000 box office for the controversial (content and technical) Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk that dipped into the fray with two 4K engagements. It also proved a good weekend for glacial expansions with excellent holds for The Eagle Huntress, A Man Called Ove and Moonlight.
International day-and-day titles included Telugu Sahasam Swasaga Sagipo (along with a Tamil-dubbed version) was off to a solid start of $417,000 while Punjabi anime Chaar Sahibzaade drew an OK $250,000. Hindi Rock On 2 failed to ignite with a $85,400 tally.
Overall revenues generated slightly more than $160 million and dipped 17% from last weekend. However that was sufficient to see a sturdy 51% improvement from 2015 when the second weekend of Spectre led with $33.7 million and the top newcomer was Meet the Coopers with an $8.3 million box office.
In addition to continued potency in North America Captain America grossed an estimated $60 million internationally to bring its foreign cume to $340 million.
Despite division, depression and dissention following the U.S. election there appeared to be no radical impact on moviegoing with all three new entries performing close to expectations. The most ambitious of the trio Arrival received respectful to laudatory critical response but may have a hard time surviving the ferocious volume of awards season releases. Studio exit demos identified the initial audience as 52% male with 85% of viewers aged 25 and older.
Getting an early start on the holidays Almost Christmas played decidedly to its core with 71% of viewers identified as African American. Overall the crowd was 54% female with 60% aged 25-years and older.
While not literally a shut out Shut In’s audience was 56% female with 60% of ticket buyers aged 25-years and younger.
