  1. Chris L. says:

A bit surprising (and encouraging) that Silence went up four spots with almost as many negative tweets as enthused ones, and no recognition from NYFCC or BFCA. I tend to trust the positive voices like Bilge Ebiri who seem to be engaged with the director’s life work of exploring these themes. Now if we could just see some actual reviews!

I’m also hoping that Loving holds on for dear life. One keeps seeing it described as “low-key” or “passionless.” The movie I saw actually gained intensity from its quieter passages. Maybe Nichols’ laconic style just isn’t for everyone, but I wish voters would see it as more than a dutiful “issue-oriented” candidate.

  2. Jerry says:

I hope Loving gets a best picture nomination since in my mind it is a far better film than the three higher ranked films that I have seen. Also I love that it did not do an Argo and over dramatize a true story with needless lying crap.

  3. JDS says:

Critics and awards folks are so disconnected from paying audiences. Saw Manchester at Landmark in WLA in a 1/3 full aud. Everyone was bored, the movie dragged, music was terrible, it was ugly to look at, grief porn at its worst. No one clapped or discussed the movie after. Just a complete dud. Movies like this and Boyhood are why audiences distrust critics who steer them to these self-indulgent movies that fail to get people to think or feel. Two eps of OITNB or Better Call Saul have better writing, acting and directing than this, that’s why people are staying home now.
