The Weekend Report

Moana remained atop the marketplace for the third week with an estimated $18.9 million, ahead of incoming Office Christmas Party, at $17.4 million. The session’s only other wide opener (following two weeks exclusive), Miss Sloane, lobbied only $1.9 million. Also sputtering was romantic comedy The Bounce Back with a $229,000 tally from 608 dates.

The loudest sound was from Oscar-touted musical La La Land that grossed $823,000 from five screens. It was easily the year’s top per-location average and awards buzz should keep momentum strong through the holidays.

Among foreign language day-and-dates, the Telugu Dhruva was off to a solid start of $827,000 while the Hindi Befikre failed to connect with $503,00o. Filipino comedy The Super Parental Guardians performed well with a $220,000 gross at 62 households, while China’s Sword Master failed with a $38,900 initial thrust.

Box office hovered around $88 million and underperformed last weekend by 10%. It was still 12% improved from 2015 when The Hunger Games finale re-ascended to the top with $11.4 million to edge out the $11.1 million debut of In the Heart of the Sea.

Initial tracking for Office Christmas Party celebrated a $20 million plus debut that got paired back as opening day approached. While not quite the raucous diversion from the season’s material pursuits it still scored its core audience. The picture tilted 56% male with 83% of viewers aged 25 and older. The film also bowed in eighteen international territories to an estimated $9 million. Russi, was most receptive to the ca-ching of $2.3 million.

Both Nocturnal Animals and Manchester By the Sea had sizable expansions keyed to seasonal awards buzz with Manchester getting larger cheers. Also of note Disney domestic box office set a new annual record for an individual distributor and now stands at $2.5 billion. The film opens its first Star Wars spinoff Rogue One next weekend.
