The Weekend Report

Rogue One continues to dominate seasonal moviegoing with an estimated $68.5 million for the three-day portion (four-day estimates arrive tomorrow) of the Christmas holidays.

The annual flood of new releases amounted to a lot of coal in stockings. One notable exception was animated Sing, which grossed $33.1 million and appears to be the year-end family option. Otherwise Yule openers struggled to find audiences including sci-fi Passengers, which grossed $13.9 million. Videogame adaptation Assassin’s Creed battled to $10.5 million and the dating comedy Why Him? made out with a $9.9 million.

Christmas expansions for Lion, Fences and La La Land, all fourth target audiences. Exclusives saw dynamic per screens for both faith saga Silence with $123,000 from four temples and a $137,000 box office at seven sites for Patriots Day Boston Marathon bombing heroics. Also good were bows of children’s fantasy A Monster Calls with $33,200, and Almodóvar’s femme-centric suspenser Julieta that grossed $57,500. In international day-and-date releases, Hindi Dangal proved potent with a $3.1 million debut.

Revenues for the frame generated about $172 million and dipped 20% from last weekend. It was a 43% decline from 2015 when the second weekend of Star Wars: The Force Awakens led with $180.5 million, while newcomers Daddy’s Home and Joy bowing respectively to $45.1 million and $19.6 million. With a week remaining in the calendar box office is roughly 3% ahead of last year’s pace.

This year’s holiday calendar placement proves a challenge for weekend estimates, with distribution opting to emphasize four-day performance that could be equally perilous in respective outcomes. Traditionally, box office has dipped precipitously on Christmas day and ballooned on Boxing Day. The last time Christmas and New Year’s occurred on a Sunday was 2011, but much has changed in the marketplace since then that could provide pluses and minuses for folks going to the multiplex. Tomorrow’s column will likely show significant changes to today’s estimates.
