The Weekend Report (4-Day Christmas Edition)
Christmas got crowded but Rogue One led weekend movie charts with an estimated four-day gross of $93.3 million. As expected, the best of the new entries was animated Sing in second spot with a $56 million bow.
Trailing behind with fair results were the sci-fi Passengers that grossed $23 million, the videogame adaption Assassin’s Creed with $15.1 million and the dating comedy Why Him? with $16.8 million. In international day-and-date, Hindi Dangal was potent with a $4.3 million debut.
Exclusive openers saw dynamic per-screens for both the faith-and-torture saga Silence with $174,000 from four venues and a $232,000 box office at seven sites for Patriots Day. Also good were bows of children’s fantasy A Monster Calls with $41,900 and Almodovar’s latest, Julieta, grossing $143,000.
Also receiving a Christmas day launch was the tale of women behind the space race, Hidden Figures, which launched with $963,000 from 25 pads. 1930s gangster saga Live By Night took $58,400 from four speakeasies and Germany’s short-listed Oscar contender Toni Erdmann pranked a $30,600 box office from three screens.
The crowded marketplace also saw effective major expansions for La La Land and Lion. Fences went national Christmas day with the sort of force that award candidates aspire to.
Revenues for the frame generated about $280 million in ticket consumption for the four day period and dipped 20% (3-day to 3-day) from last weekend. It was also a 43% decline from 2015 when the second weekend of Star Wars: The Force Awakens led with $180.5 million with newcomers Daddy’s Home and Joy bowing respectively to $45.1 million and $19.6 million. With a week remaining in the calendar box office is running roughly 3% ahead of last year’s pace.
Demos for Sing skewed 51% female with 69% of the audience 25 and younger. Families accounted for 61% of the total. The film opened internationally three weeks ago and entered the current weekend with $25 million banked and added $54 million this weekend.
Passengers attracted a 50/50 gender crowd that was 56% 25 and older. It opened day-and-date in 27 international markets to $16 million including top rankings in Russia and Taiwan and strong showings in the UK and Mexico.
Assassin’s Creed tilted 64% male with 54% of viewers aged 25-years and older. The film also opened in 22 foreign territories to $14 million including a top spot in France of $5.1 million.
