(Some of) THE GURUS SPEAK

Peter Howell: “Moonlight is the tortoise to La La Land‘s hare in this year’s Oscar race.”

Nathaniel R: “It’s a pity that 20th Century Women and Jackie won’t factor in more heavily, but films that are intensely focused on women always have an uphill battle for year-end awards. Both movies will outlive some of the titles that are headed for Oscar glory. ”

Sasha Stone: “in a competitive year the preferential ballot can be a tricky thing to predict. Remember, it isn’t necessarily the film with the most votes that wins. It’s the film with the most 1 and 2 votes that wins.”

I guess that’s it for Loving. The Gurus kept it in the running longer than most predictors, but this ill-defined “lack of passion” take has apparently defeated its chances. Just when I’m inclined to ask why so many think Hidden Figures is better filmmaking, I see thoughtful writers like Michael Sicinski who hold the same view, so maybe the Academy is on the right side of history after all.

More bewildering by far is the (re-)validation of Mel Gibson’s blood-spraying, auto-messianic directorial vision. We hear a lot about the “steak-eating” bloc of voters who dig this style, but are they really that impressed with “Hacksaw” or partly looking to drive up ratings in Trumpland via Gibson’s red carpet “redemption?” Hopefully the directors’ branch, at least, will be more forward-looking. (And hopefully Howell is right about Moonlight.)

—Is there any clear evidence that any Best Documentary Feature is more popular than the others? I am still hoping for “The Ivory Game” and “Zero Days” to make the five nominees for Best Documentary Feature.
