The Weekend Report
Get Out got in with an estimated $30.5 million debut. The session’s other two national openers had less fortuitous results. The animated Rock Dogs charted 11th with $3.6 million. Collide bumped into $1.5 million.
In limited release, period political thriller Bitter Harvest reaped a fallow $203,000. Indian imports barely registered a pulse save for Hindi wartime drama Rangoon, which grossed $324,000 from 114 screens. In Québec, French animation Ballerina was en point with a $223,000 tally, following an overseas gross of more than $60 million. Québec local comedy Ca Sent le coupe also posted good results of $112,000 from 35 sites.
In exclusives, Oscar-nominated and César-winning animation My Life as a Zucchini was solid with a $26,700 box office from two screens.
Revenues for the frame exceeded $145 million and dipped 18% from last weekend. It was 17% diminished from 2016 (not Oscar weekend) when the second weekend of Deadpool led with $56.5 million and newcomers Risen and The Witch opened respectively with $2.9 million and $2 million
The horror thriller Get Out was expected to lead the box office charts with an impressive debut shy of $20 million. Tracking proved to be woefully shy of the runaway results, owing in part to unanimous critical praise as well as chatter from social sites. On the domestic front the R-rated “in-laws” nightmare drew in a 50/50 gender audience with 51% aged 25 and older. The core 18-34 crowd accounted for 69% of viewers.
Both Rock Dog and Collide were expected to gross less than $4 million. The animated musical skewed 55% female with 47% aged 18 and younger.
With Oscar hours away, the weekend saw prime contenders adding engagements. Front runner La La Land added 146 playdates and grossed a near carbon box office from last weekend. The majority of potential winners with the exception of Fences and the documentary I Am Not Your Negro have opened in the major international territories but can look to a more potent ancillary revenue stream in the coming months and beyond.
