The Weekend Report

The debut of Logan cut a mean figure estimated at $85.5 million to easily lead weekend movie going. Other national releases saw good returns of $16.2 million for the faith-based The Shack and a crash landing of $4.7 million for the brooding drama Before I Fall.

Also disappointing in limited wide release was the relationship comedy Table 19 with $1.6 million. New imports from India flatlined and the best of the exclusives was the drama-comedy The Last Word with a $33,900 tally from four screens. In Canada, the animated Ballerina expanded into English-language venues to solid returns of $718,000.

Oscar’s aftermath saw only best picture and foreign-language winners Moonlight and The Salesman gaining dramatic upticks.

Revenues for the session pushed to about $185 million and a significant 52% balloon from last weekend. It was also 14% improved from 2016 when debuts of Zootopia and London Has Fallen led with respective opening of $75.1 million and $21.6 million.

Logan, the (reportedly) closing chapter of X-Men’s Wolverine saga, was anticipated to open big on the order of slightly better than $70 million. Trackers damped down expectations because of the film’s hard R-rating. Studio exit demos identified the throng as 63% male and 68% aged 25-years and older. Large format engagements accounted for about 23% of overall engagements and 27% of box office.

The film opened concurrently in 81 international markets to an estimated $152 million to rank as the studio’s third-largest foreign debut. China was in the forefront with $46 million, followed by the UK at $11 million and South Korea grossing $8.2 million.

The Shack had a standard opening in the $12-$13 million range. But the zeitgeist of national division led to a larger response for hope on the big screen. Its audience was 66% female and 72% aged 35 and beyond.

Despite its YA cred, the Groundhog Day dynamic of Before I Fell wasn’t expected to gross more than $5 million and that proved prescient. Exit demos were not available at press deadline but its target crowd was likely youthful and female.
