The Weekend Report

The Boss Baby animated an estimated $49.7 million to take the crown from Beauty and the Beast, which grossed $47.5 million. The session’s other incoming national release Ghost in the Shell, wound up with a disappointing $18.8 million. The frame’s onslaught of new exclusives didn’t generate a single potent grosser.

The Zookeeper’s Wife bowed to a solid $3.3 million. Holidays in India saw a flood of new pictures with only Punjabi Raab de Radio displaying any commercial heft. China’s The Devotion of Suspect X admired a $328,000 launch from 43 venues.

Weekend revenue pushed close to $175 million and ebbed back 14% from seven days back. It was 31% improved from 2016, when the second weekend of Batman v Superman led with a $51.3 million tally.

It was another weekend of surprises—good and bad—in light of industry tracking that failed to near actual performance. Pundits identified strong appeal for the animated yarn of a corporate overlord in diapers in The Boss Baby. Nonetheless it was predicted to be second to B&B with an opening in the area of mid-$30 million. That changed abruptly as Friday matinees upped the ante to $40 million-plus. The domestic audience skewed slightly female at 53%. And despite a sophisticated premise, 62% of viewers were 25 and younger with 67% identifying as families.

On the international side, The Boss Baby launched a week earlier in a handful of territories to a sturdy $17.5 million. This weekend it added 29 nations and grossed an estimated $36 million with Mexico bowing with $6.5 million and France ranking third among top grossers with $5.3 million to a vibrant $5.9 million second weekend in Russia.

On the flipside, the live-action adaptation of anime Ghost in the Shell had been tipped to be competitive with box office of $28-$30 million. Studio exit demos reflected an audience that was 61% male with 76% of viewers aged 25 and older. Ghost was received more warmly overseas with a $40 million wave from 50 markets. Its top grossers were Russia at $5.3 million, a $4.2 million box office from South Korea and France adding $3.1 million.

While the hot topic at Cinemacon was earlier day-and-date of theatrical and home release of new movies via VOD, the issue of industry tracking services came under scrutiny as well. The current calendar has seen wildly off-kilter projections of new releases with a tilt toward undervaluing a movie’s appeal. The key tracking agencies have pointed red-faced to an inability to incorporate social media as a factor into their equations. One studio exec confidently asserted “they’ll fix it and get it right… but someone’s going to pay for what’s been happening.”
