Weekend Estimates by Not As Boss As Expected Klady
The Boss Baby won the weekend, as expected, though its Saturday family bump was not quite as strong as might have been. Still, another success for Fox as DreamWorks Animation heads out the door (one film left). Beauty is still a beast, though it was a bit off last weekend’s Friday-to-Weekend multiple. Ghost in the Shell couldn’t crack the $20 million barrier… and even that would have been disappointing for a movie of this size. Dazzling effects imagery isn’t enough to open anymore. The Zookeeper’s Wife opens well, in spite of an oddball 541 screen count.
Curious to see the final numbers tomorrow.
“B&TB” beat its estimate the past two weekends. Wouldn’t be surprised if the actual total is even closer to “Baby.”
Will it outgross “Finding Dory”?

B&TB should easily outgross Finding Dory at this point. I’m guessing it falls short of rogue one

Haven’t seen much analysis of it here or anywhere that I can think of, but how did they bungle Trainspotting 2 quite this bad? Guess it’s a classic example of a generational hit where its audience is middle-aged and gray and waits for Netflix now, so maybe Sony sensed this. Or maybe the original wasn’t quite as much a juggernaut as we remember? It’s been clinging on to dear life for three weekends now to no particular avail.
I wouldn’t have expected much from something as niche as Personal Shopper, and IFC usually seems to barely care anyway, though it seemed like Stewart did her usual whirlwind PR tour. Has that much promotional ink ever been afforded to a performer whose films regularly gross about 1 mil domestic?
As I mentioned in the Friday Estimates, Ghost in the Shell had no hook, at least not in the marketing department. Lucy was an easier sell in a lot of ways. And to folks talking about too many movies out right now in the other entry, March is becoming a good time to open a movie outside of the Summer/Holidays. In some ways, it is a “holiday” month when you consider Spring Break is spread out throughout a lot of the month.
What the heck has happened to this blog? The posts seem to be of one vein, and there’s no interesting insight.
Has the discourse moved to somewhere else? Where’s the discussion about who’s going to run Sony? On Stuber’s Netflix deal. On the agencies dipping their funds into tech start-ups after Snap’s IPO. On Tsujihara’s standing in Chernin’s shadow….
March has been an interesting opening window since the OG Ninja Turtles opened big in March 1990. It held the March opening record for a good 10 years.

how would this make the blog less boring
Palmtree, and just before the turtles that year was red October and Pretty Woman, three of the top six movies of the year released in what was thought of as a minor month and the only summer film to top those three was ghost which was hardly seen as a tentpole. But 90 was an odd year giving hope to those who were worried about runaway budgets only to have outsized spending vindicated the next year with T2.
March 1990 had it all. Thank you for this trip back down memory lane.

Hey David – I have given you a lot of shit at times but you’ve kept this blog going for at least FOURTEEN YEARS, so special thanks are in order! I can remember all the way back to those lively discussions about Matrix Reloaded…..and the ones about Million Dollar Baby….and Brokeback Mountain…..and The Dark Knight…and Star Trek….and The Social Network. Dude I cannot recall ANYTHING else online movie-related that has sustained itself for that long….outside of Aint-It-Cool or Hollywood Elsewhere which I just gave up on a couple of years back and no longer even have bookmarked, but yours always has been. 🙂
