The Weekend Report
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, the only national opener, commanded roughly 74% of domestic moviegoing with an estimated $144.4 million haul. Guardians of the Galaxy’s set off a week earlier internationally and grossed $106 million from 37 territories. Its second international weekend added 18 markets and an additional $124 million box office. The foreign charge was led by a $48 million bow in China, with South Korea and Russia adding $13.3 million and $11.6 million, respectively.
In limited wide release, Richard Gere-starring chamber drama The Dinner bowed to a disappointing $680,000. Among international day-and-date entries, China’s This is Not What I Expected had an only okay opening of $137,000. Best of the exclusives was marital crisis dramedy The Lovers with $66,200 from four beddings. Andrei Tarkovsky’s digitally-restored Stalker mused upon $18,000 on a single Manhattan screen.
Revenues for the frame climbed to about $195 million for a 96% uptick from last weekend. That was 20% diminished from 2016, when the debut of Captain America: Civil Wars predominated with $179.1 million, which left The Jungle Book swinging into second spot at $24.4 million.
On the domestic front, tracking suggested minimally a $140 million debut for GOTGv2 with optimists predicting as much as $170 million. Its audience tilted 56% male with 60% aged 25 and older. Roughly 48% of viewers fell into the 17-34 corridor, with only 20% younger than 12 or in the 50- plus categories. A studio spokesman suggested that unlike other Marvel universes, Guardians of the Galaxy gains appeal from its inability to incorporate characters from The Avengers and other superhero franchises.
