The Weekend Report

Wonder Woman lassoed top spot for a second weekend a with an estimated $57.5 million That was bad news for the high-profile The Mummy reboot that dug up only $32.2 million. The session featured two other national debuts: the spartan horror It Comes at Night ranked sixth with a chilly $5.9 million, while military pooch patrol Megan Leavey barked up $3.7 million.

In limited wide release, My Cousin Rachel bowed with a tepid $970,000. Imports from India largely flatlined. The Hero opened to $44,700 at four hitching posts, while Beatriz at Dinner zeitgeisted a potent $141,000 bow from five shindigs.

Revenues for the session generated close to $145 million and slid 24% from the previous weekend. This was a more modest 7% decline from 2016, when the debut of The Conjuring 2 dominated with $40.4 million, followed by Warcraft and Now You See Me 2 with debuts of $24.2 million and $22.4 million.

The Mummy initiated Universal’s trawl of its horror vaults —Bill Condon’s take on The Bride of Frankenstein is mooted as next — rather than a continuation of the studio’s 1999 reimagining of the buried treasure. An aggressive marketing campaign and positioning as a Tom Cruise star vehicle led to anticipation of an opening around $40 million, but fell conspicuously short following withering last-minute critical response and downbeat reaction on social media.

Initial overseas response was considerably better with an initial launch estimated at $142 million from 63 territories. Once again China was in the forefront with a $52 million opener. The other top grossing nations included South Korea at $17.8 million, $7.6 million in Russia and Mexico contributing $5 million.
